The New Ghostbusters - Part 7

This new trailer was a better one, i actually thought some of it was kinda funny but i am sure they tried for a different tone for this trailer compared to the first so its hard to say oh maybe it will be good because alot of what was in the first trailer was not funny.

They should've released the newest trailer first. I can assure the hate wouldn't have been that vicious.

I'm also curious how now they made it look like the firehouse is their place again, when we know is not. That's deceptive.
Or is it?

I chuckled at the last scene of Jones just trying to peace out of the concert. *shrug*

This movie is going to make a killing opening weekend, watch. People will want to get on the hype train, and want to be part of the conversation about how bad it is, so will go and see it just to be part of it. If it sucks, it will have a massive second weekend drop...however, if it''s decent to good, the next weekend might see less of a drop..either way, this thing will make bank.

and that's the worst possible outcome
a s*** movie that still kills it at the box office

The reaction to that video is insane. He gives very valid reasons why he won't watch it. Quickly says it's nothing to do with it starring women. Yet every comment or article written about it makes him sound like a woman hating piece of ****.

Yep. However, I'm gonna throw this out there: people who dislike the movie are not sexist, the filmmakers are.

Look at almost every joke in the trailer. The humor all stems from antiquated gender (and racial) stereotypes. Almost every joke is a woman screaming, giving an over-the-top hormonal reaction to a situation. Those that do not fit into that category seem to fall into the category of "woman is overweight and/or not living up to traditional gender roles...isn't it funny when fat woman dances? How absurd!" So, based on the trailer, the humor seems to stem almost entirely from these two premises; "women are irrational" or "woman is fat and that is funny." The only character who doesn't seem to fall into this category is McKinnon's. And its worth noting that she is barely featured in either trailer.

Or, in the alternative, there is one other source of humor: Leslie Jones screaming and acting like a really racist person doing an impression of a black lady. Her character seems to be written and acted as less of a fully formed character and more of an over-the-top caricature. Let me ask all of the social crusaders who are claiming people who dislike this movie to be either sexist/racist opponents of progression: when is the last time that a comedy portrayed a black female as anything other than an over-the-top caricature? Why can't the black woman be the straight man rather than the fall guy?

Further, when is the last time a comedy portrayed women as anything more than hormonal, reactionary, messes of human beings, who really just deep down, need a man? Its not progress to have women headline movies if the movies portray them as little more than two dimensional caricatures. For all of his so called "feminist" movies Paul Feig sure seems to fall into these traps quite a bit. In fact, all filmmakers do.

The only example I can think of that does not do this is Veep. In Veep, the female characters (one of whom is the lead and the other is the main supporting character, Dryfus and Chlumsky) are strong, assertive, driven by something other than men, and are in no way cliches. You could take any bit of dialogue on Veep and switch it to a male role without missing a beat. The characters are written as people, not men or women. Similarly, it is the only comedy I can think of in which an African American woman plays the straight man. Sue, the President's assistant is the only professional character on the show (in fact, her humor derives from her being overly professional). There is no fall back on cheap cliches.

Incidentally, Veep is one of the most beloved comedies on TV right now, having just won an Emmy for Best Comedy Series.

So, I suggest this: perhaps the issues people have with this movie have nothing to do with it being headlined by women. Perhaps the issue is the fact that it isn't particularly funny (based on the trailers) and despite being headlined by women, Feig feels the need to present women in the most marginalizing and patronizing light possible and then paint it as "feminism" and "progression."

People said the exact same thing about the new Fantastic 4.

Any chance the director's rep will get it more views than F4? Not many people in the GA knew who Trank was.

I think the Ghostbusters name + McCarthy will be able to be a bit more of a draw than Fantastic Four.

lol, they played the 2nd trailer during the Survivor finale last night.

My wife: A women Ghostbusters movie?
Me: Yeah didn't you see the trailer during BvS?
Wife: Nope, guess I missed it.
Me: Want to see it?
Wife: Nope, looks dumb

You are basing your assessment on very superficial things you have picked up from, an admittedly bad, marketing campaign. At the core of the characters is something more than those superficial observations. Kristen Wiig's character has the most potential, and unless they really trim up the film or do reshoots, she is the most disappointing. She is struggling to be taken seriously and in doing so she completely alters who she is and what she believes in. McCarthy is her former partner who continued their paranormal research, forgoing legitimacy and tenure for her convictions. The personal conflicts and the character arcs of all of the lead characters have more to do with overcoming skepticism and opposition to be taken seriously for who you are and what you believe in, than catching ghosts. There is tremendous potential in the script and the idea. I love the production design. I loved most of the nods to the fans, when they were subtle. The cameos were all fun. There is more to the film than those trailers are showing.

I have always believed this movie was gonna do ok at the box office, not amazing but curiosity will keep it afloat i think and then sony will start thinking about a sequel.

i haven't been onboard with it since it was announced but i can see this being the scenario

Never thought I would hear someone claim racism and feminism in the same sentence but this trailer pulled it off.

And that line is just terrible, because the crowd clearly caught Mccarthy's character. So yes Patty, is was totally a race thing.

Same, I guess there hoping for that mccarthy following/ paul blart crowd/ young girls turnout? I really have no idea who this movie is aimed at because the ghostbusters fanbase seems to want to loathe this flick.

I'm not sure if my level of enjoyment of the film will go up or down when I see it in it's completed form. I know that it will have to be pretty spectacular to beat the experience of meeting and sitting directly in front of Ivan Reitman and hearing his reactions and whispered comments. He enjoyed the movie, And he had some genuine laughs while watching it. I'm a little pissy about the marketing, because I feel like they are simultaneously spoiling the best story details (that may be because I understand the context of some of the out of context quick cuts of action) and ruining their chance at making a good impression. The best jokes have still been left out of the trailers, other than Patty deciding she was out, going home, had enough of this crap. I thought that scene played well and should have been saved for the movie. They didn't cut the stage dive...dammit...I actual made note of that on my audience score card. It's weak sauce.

The opening scene is on par with the opening Library scene of the original, as far as being creepy and atmospheric. There are a few genuinely spooky moments in the movie, and it is a fun and overall enjoyable film, that doesn't come close to being as good as the original. It just doesn't measure up.

That said, I liked it better than Ghostbusters 2, and about as much as I loved The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters. I consider myself a Ghostbusters fan...I still have my toys and models. I'm working on a ghost trap and proton pack replica set. I didn't love the new movie, but I had a good time and want to see it again, flaws and all...

High points: The gradual evolution of the equipment, there are some really cool reinventions of the gear. Kate McKinnon. Chris Hemsworth.

Again, although our opinions on the movie differ, your analysis and breakdown is spot on. Though I didn't care for McKinnon's constant mugging and I usually like her on SNL.

SJW's gonna SJW. What no one really realizes is that these online film critics like Faraci, who was pretty much the leader on the AFN video, have close relationships to those in the studio system. Yes, sometimes they go off the rails but for the most part they like to protect their relationships with the studios which means protecting certain films and the criticisms, discussions around them.

Yeah as has been pointed out before the marketing wants to toy with the viewer a bit but once you see the movie I think it plays well. If you really want answers everything in the old reddit breakdown is spot on

SEXIST!!!

People said the exact same thing about the new Fantastic 4.

I don't remember many people saying that, at all. Maybe a vocal minority of supporters. FF4 also didn't get anywhere near the attention as this film. 17 million views of FF4's first trailer as opposed to GB 33 million for the first trailer. That attention matters and the fact that it's firing everyone up on both sides means an interesting opening weekend scenario.

Whether we like to admit it or not, the movie could still be very good after the final cut is put together and the effects finished. It'll be up to the GA and not the diehards to decide. If it's good...heck, even if it's just decent, this film could do very well with that spotlight continuously shining on it.

If it's bad, who knows.

Unfortunately we can't all marry the good ones. Sometimes we go for hot chicks that have the worst taste in entertainment imaginable.

Or we marry a woman who's excited for the film and is hard to judge for her taste in the film because the movie isn't out yet.

She's doin alright so far. Loved Deadpool, loved Captain America: Civil War (and predicted the twist because of the hint in Winter Soldier), and hasn't bothered to see Batman v Superman.

The thing I've noticed with the trailers is that it's totally banking on the Ghosbusters name to get people into the seats. There's the barest hint of what the story is about because it's assuming everyone saw the original and thinks this is just a reboot of the same story with a new cast. I know it's just marketing but I wish I could see something in the trailers that says this movie should exist beyond just cashing in on the Ghostbusters name.

Of course they are. That's why they brought back the Ghostbusters name and logo. They want to boost the sales. Still doesn't mean they movie will be good or bad, just a studio doing what studios do...playing it safe.

I actually thought they revealed too much in this with the giant villain reveal. Because my kids have been collecting the toys I knew it was coming, but it felt a little bit like seeing Doomsday in the BvS trailer.

I talked before about possibly brilliantly executed PR campaign from Sony. And people thought I was nut. But now, just wandering online, I accidently found youtube video which back my theory up.
