The New Ghostbusters - Part 8

As I said a couple of months ago, my favorite aspect of this take on the Ghostbusters was the way the equipment evolves and gets better as the story progresses. Holtzman's constant tinkering is great, her energy is so frenetic, like a mad scientist.

It surprises me that McKinnon has been brushed aside in the promotion of this movie. I mean, if you blink at the wrong moment in any given trailer, you may not even know she is part of the cast. This is strange to me because she is arguably the second most talented member of the cast (behind Wiig who is criminally underrated as a straight (wo)man, which seems to be her role here) and the little bits of her we get are some of the few bright spots of trailers.

I get focus on Melissa McCarthy. I personally don't find her to be funny (especially since her entire comedic schtick seems to be "LOOK AT ME! I AM FAT AND I FART!"...she is the female Kevin James) but she is box office gold, so I get it. But the heavy handed focus on Leslie Jones in the promotional material really baffles me. Her character seems to be little more than every over-the-top stereotype of an uneducated, loud, middle aged, frumpy, black woman imaginable....and its not a particularly funny portrayal of those stereotypes either. But the marketing team just keeps pushing ahead with her, front and center. I just don't get it, are they trying to win over the Tyler Perry crowd?

Now they may be working with what they have, maybe McKinnon's role in the movie is fairly limited and Jones is the central focus leaving them with little choice. I dunno. But you'd think advertisement would be an attempt to put their best foot forward and, at least from what we've seen, that isn't Leslie Jones.

What's this movie even called?

Ghostbusters.

Honestly, the marketing has me completely baffled. Granted, what I saw was a cut of what they had way back in February, so I'm sure a lot has changed, but, they have a lot more to work with than what the trailers are showing.

Personally, I would have focused more on the horror aspects, built atmosphere with some of the creepier moments like the reaction of the tour guide from the opening scare, and I would have worked the skepticism angle. I would have shown that this is a world that doesn't believe in the paranormal and that the ladies pay a steep price professionally. Play up the government conspiracy sub plot. Include Charles Dance firing Kristen Wiig from her teaching position, as well as the scene of Melissa McCarthy getting fired. Work the underdog angle, and then show some quick cuts of action and a few laughs and gags. Save the fan service Easter eggs and nods for the movie. Oh, and I would definitely have included Bill Murray's (clearly not Peter Venkman) character in the marketing, shown him deriding and casting doubt on them and the existence of ghosts. It would have made it clear that this is its own thing, it's own continuity, and still worked on pulling the nostalgia strings a little.

And then you see the weird dichotomy in the domestic vs international trailers. I don't know, Sony is just completely screwing up the marketing for this.

They're trying to appeal to the idiots. That's it. Loud screaming and crazy antics. Holtzman's humor is more sardonic.

At this point I'm only interested in Kate McKinnon who if the movie is bad, will probably shine.

^Is that Holtzman? She's the one that's been the funniest in the promos I've seen.

This movie looks terrible. There are no two ways about it. I'm think 35 million opening weekend.

The last trailer I saw called it Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. I'm not sure if "Anser the Call" is the tagline or part of the tittle.
What you mean "answer the call"? Aren't we supposed to call them?

We went from "who you gonna call" to "pick up the phone I know you are there"

Something I've noticed, and maybe it's just me.

Leslie Jones has been featured primarily in all the trailers and people have their opinions about her character, Melissa McCarthy has been featured quite a bit because it's Melissa McCarthy and she has her fanbase, Kate McKinnon hasn't had much to say in any of the trailers but we're all sort of hoping she's the breakout of this movie, but I've noticed not a lot of people have said much about Kristen Wiig in this movie.

To me, nothing about her character or her just being in the movie altogether has stood out to me. Almost as if she's sort of an after thought as opposed to everyone else in the main cast.

She looks bad too me. Wiig's had a couple of moments in the trailer, but they have been the best by far.

Kristen Wiig is very much out of her element in the movie. She doesn't stand out, other than her heavy handed inappropriate advances towards Kevin, in that cringe worthy awkward way she is good at.

McKinnon easily looks like the highlight to me.

I think it helps that McKinnon's character is pretty much cartoon Egon. Again, one reason I'm interested in this movie is the inspiration it seems to have taken from the cartoons, at least visually.

Based on the trailers and TV spots, the most important characters/actors so far seem to be:
1. Jones/Tolan
2. McCarthy/Yates
3. Hemsworth/Kevin
4. Slimer
5. McKinnon/Holtzmann
6. Wiig/Gilbert

They really needed to make all members of the core team be of equal importance but the marketing has done the opposite of what a movie about a team should be focused on and put a couple individuals above the rest.

I agree with your ordering and I'm guessing the reason they laid it out that way was partially in response to the backlash.

1. Jones was moved up in response to the negativity about the stereo types associated with her character.
2. McCarthy was probably always supposed to be the lead because of her box office bank.
3. Hemsworth because hey look there's a guy it's not all girls. And also ladies look Chris Hemsworth.
4. Slimer because it's a Ghostbusters film and look we've got Slimer yay.
5. McKinnon because she's quirky.
6. Wiig is last because she's the straight (wo)man and least offensive. Which means they don't know how to promote that.

McKinnon is still my fave thing about this film to date
