The New Ghostbusters - Part 9

Wiig and Byrne are what Bridesmaids work for me, with the help of an IT Crowd alum. Byrne is also the reason Neighbors worked for me and she was fantastic is Spy as well. Her comedic talents are underrated imo.

This, we agree upon. Byrne should be doing a lot more comedy.

There is zero sexism in this thread.

Unless sexism has made a lot of the footage look terrible and the new theme a pile of meh! Then I can't say I noticed

Even if it was the 4 original guys being flatterned by a stay puff balloon it still wouldn't be appealing

Enduring comedians, Bill Murray, Ricky Gervais, etc, are willing to completely start from scratch and find new sources of humor. I have yet to see that McCarthy is capable of doing that.

McCarthy hasn't been popular for quite that long, though. I mean, she was still doing a network sitcom last year.

The strength of this reaction was very different. It was louder and more angry then anything I had seen for such a property.

I think it was largely a perfect storm though. I cannot think of any movie that is as revered as Ghostbusters being remade in such a manner.

The marketing for this movie isn't friendly to anyone who grew up with ghostbusters, but we will see.

I grew up with Ghostbusters. I was 10 in 1984.

Wasn't particularly blown away by any of the trailers...but I'm not in some sort of flying rage about them either.

Reviews seem encouraging, so I've got my ticket for Friday.

When someone tweets to one of the cast that they'd rather "be Brock Turner'd than sit through your movie", I don't really care what their opinion about this movie is not matter how much it mattered to them growing up.

It's not overreaction plenty of people do not find Melissa McCarthy or Lesile Jones funny at all.
You said they were all terrible. That includes all 4 women. More importantly, while I know little of Jones, McCarthy and Wiig had the box office and awards play to show they are at least mediocre at best. :cwink:

I saw her in revival of You Can't Take It With You on Broadway about 2 years, ago. She played the daughter that had to bring the boyfriend home to the eccentric family. She was hilarious. :yay:

I think her response to this movie, should it underperform, will determine whether McCarthy sticks around long term or burns out like comedians before her. I think this is her Land of the Lost. Ferrell, to his credit, did try something different with LAnd of the Lost. He played the straight man (to an extent) rather than the fall guy. McCarthy seems to be doing that here (with Leslie Jones usurping her normal role). If this fails, I think we will see McCarthy retreat back into her typical roles and that'll lead to people getting sick of the joke.

Yeah, with women.

When they had the competing movie idea with Tatum, suddenly that movie became the real reboot. Not nearly the vitriol, and it became the champion of those crying about this stuff.

Honestly, I don't think we have many examples to compare. The all black Death at a Funeral remake comes to mind, and it was universally rejected when announced, but it was not such a relevant IP as GB

so lets see if i can get this right going by twitter and reddit, its a better film than we all thought so the original now doesn't exists, all the women are now in control men have no place in the world and we should all line up for dick removal and service to our new amazon overlords

or its just a movie that a lot of people are gonna enjoy and a lot are not and life goes on. ok i'm gonna go watch the sedgewick hotel scene for the 1000th time

Personally I thought the Tatum thing sounded terrible too

it was only the involvement of the Russos that gave that one a slight edge over Feig

I think The Boss showed she has a decent box office pull now.

Calling casting women a gimmick is not sexist. You are totally right. Of course this is only after we move the goal post and bring up the footage when we are talking about the original announcement. :cwink:

I've been meaning to ask for quite some time. Where does you avatar come from?

I think any announcement in the vein of "we are making a _____ remake with an all-________ cast" would get at least roll eyes. It's a weird thing to do. Why would you start with such a premise if not to prompt reactions of weirdness from people? (as opposed of announcing a remake, and then casting all women 'cause they are the best for the roles)

I didn't think it was that weird. Look...Ghostbusters III was never going to happen. I was in high school when GB II came out (and no one liked it), and I'd been hearing about a third one on and off ever since. It just never was going to happen.

When I heard that they were going this route, I loved the talent involved and figured, why not?

Ghostbusters is one funny movie I loved when I was a kid, one sequel that I only saw because Batman was sold out, and some kids cartoon I never watched. I adore the original, but it's never been a sacred cow franchise to me.

Yes, until she doesn't. Will Ferrell had a great box office pull...until he didn't. Adam Sandler had a great office pull...until he didn't. Comedy needs to evolve. Otherwise people get sick of the joke and that box office pull suddenly does the reverse: "I'm sick of that person, I'm not seeing that."

That you would compare McCarthy and Wiig to Kevin Hart says a lot. :funny:

The fact that you are able to separate them says alot. Must be that arrogant ale you drink. :loco:

They're both equally obnoxious and one-note.

to you it wasn't, to others it was

Well Wiig imo is just bad in comedies and I don't know about the other actress in the film so I was mainly talking about Jones and McCarthy. There are many people who feel the same way just like you accuse that sexism has a big part to do with the hate for this film.

Well, it seems that it was never going to happen, 'cause the cast was hard to reunite (Murray) and the studio didn't want to invest on it... so it looked like we had to settle with nothing. Then the studio invested on GB so we had to settle for a remake... the original cast was brough back for large cameos and I wonder why make it a remake when the same movie (for all I know that is not much) could be easily reworked as a passing of the torch, with the same female cast, and the main plot as it is. That's what I think is rubbing people the wrong way.

When I tell a lot of people about the hate for this film, they roll their eyes and say those people should just not go see it if they're so angry about it.

Here's the problem. Wiig can be funny in spots - like her scenes in "Knocked Up". However, when you put her in full time roles her schtick becomes a tired act. She plays the same character over and over again.
