IC: Mark Garfield/Sharkman
"I said I was sorry! What more do you want?"
It was the day of the competition. Kylie had ignored Mark for 42 hours, practicing on her own, despite Mark actually... shockingly, being there to offer help. She cleaned her board off, looking up at him angrily, without saying a word.
"...Okay, that stare just creeps the hell out of me."
"Well, considering you violated, like... quite a few different levels of my privacy, You deserve it."
"We live together. That's... sort of, not hard to do."
"So I should move out?"
Mark sighed, crossing his arms.
"You know I don't want that."
"Then be a little more mindful, if that's not hard to ask. What were you doing before you walked in, anyway?"
Mark paused. Great. The secret identity cover-up routine. Of all times...
"Uh... Burning wood. Listen, Ky... I don't know how I'm going to get you to stop acting like this... But I really am sorry. Okay? It's not like I intentionally did it."
Kylie looked at him, considering. Mark bit his lip, saying the next thing...
"...Besides... You know I don't swing that way...", He said, knowing full well neither of them knew it was true, but it would ease the tension.
Finally, Kylie managed a smile.
"Alright. I'll give you another chance."
"Goodie. Now I can sleep at night."
"Though, I have to ask... Did you like what you saw?"
"..."
"WHAT?!"
Kylie laughed.
"Kidding. I just needed the laugh."
Mark eased up, realising this.
"Well, now that we've got that out of the way... Isn't it about time for the first round?"
Kylie's eyes widened.
"Oh god!"
"....Yeeeah, you'd better go."
As Kylie put the finishing touches on her board, she began to run towards the contestant line, where everyone else was.
"HEY! KY!"
She stopped, looking back.
"For the record, Yes, I liked what I saw.", Mark added, with another smile.
She blushed, slightly, before continuing to the contestant line. Behind Mark, Gerr walked up, holding three virgin margaritas.
"Where'd surfer girl go?"
"Contestant line. First round's coming up in a few minutes.", Mark said, as the two sat down at the edge of the Surf Shack, which was... naturally, not that far from the beach. They had a pretty good view.
"So you guys kiss and make up?"
"You, and only you, wish."
"Pfft. Hardly. I'd have to live with that."
"What are those?", Mark asked, indicating the drinks.
"Margaritas."
"...This early?"
"They're virgin. Still want yours?"
"I'll pass, respectively."
"Awesome. More for mua."
As Mark turned, seeing the contestants to the contest lining up along the beach, He began noticing something. He was getting... hot? Shrugging it off, Mark just sat back, and watched as the various assorted surfer sterotypes paddled out to the ocean, along with Kylie.
"I thought you said it didn't start for another few minutes."
"Practice round."
"Ah. You've got to teach me this stuff, one day..."
Mark laughed. For a minute. Then, He felt something. The heat... It was increasing. He wasn't sweating, or anything... But it was definatley out of the ordinary.
"Hey, you feel that?"
"What?"
"The heat. It's getting hotter."
Gerr raised an eyebrow.
"You're tripping. We're in an air conditioned shack, under shade. We couldn't be cooler."
Realising that he was right didn't make Mark feel any better. If he was the only one feeling it, It was his senses. But he could control them, usually, in the climate. He only felt what he needed to feel. But this... This wasn't ordinary at all.
It was only a few minutes later that Mark realised what it could be. And that definatley didn't make him feel any better.
...
It can't be...
Mark was beginning to recognise the level of heat. During the fire, it had changed, drastically. Right before...
INFERNO
Immediatley, Mark turned to Gerr.
"Gerr, we need to get everyone out of here."
"Huh?"
"Something's about to happen. We need to evacuate the area!"
"...Dude. What the hell are you talking about?"
"I'm serious!"
"..."
"You sure you didn't drink one of these before we came?"
Mark stopped. It was useless. He couldn't convince everyone to go without revealing his identity, and he couldn't stop the competition due to something he couldn't explain. Looking around, Mark spotted an empty tent a few feet away, on the beach, and bolted for it. Gerr looked at him, funny.
"Definatley tripping..."
As Gerr lifted his glass to take another drink, He noticed something. His drink was... evaporating.
"What the-"
It was at that moment that a trail of fire exploded through the beach, circling it at blinding speeds. Gerr's eyes widened, watching this. Infact, everyone's did. Inbetween screaming, that is. Even the surfers in the ocean noticed this happening. No one could believe it. Just as it seemed to be over, something else emerged from the fire. Cackling, Inferno stood on the beach, burning everything around him.
"Beach party, anyone?"
Leaping forward, Inferno threw his hands out, creating a large auora of fire around him, making everyone run for cover. He simply laughed, seeing them run.
"No? Damn. And here I was, in the mood."
Inferno turned, seeing the banner for the surf competition above him.
"Surf competiton? That's weird."
He looked out at the stunned surfers, who simply floated, looking at him in shock.
"They don't seem to be surfing to me."
Raising his hand, everyone watched in horror as the front part of the ocean began to evaporate, creating a clear trail to the surfers as they were knocked to the dry ocean floor. Inferno stepped forward, looking at all of them.
"I'm looking for a challenge. Is this the best set of atheletes this island has to offer? Because if so, spare me."
He then began burning them. One by one, they caught on fire, screaming as they tried to put themselves out. As Inferno continued, He stopped, noticing Kylie, who he had yet to burn.
"Well, well. It seems not every surfer here is a skinheaded pretender. I think I'll keep you, babe.", Inferno said, with an evil grin on his glowing face. Kylie's eyes widened, as he reached out to grab her.
And, in that moment, they both noticed a shark fin, racing right towards them in the remaining ocean. What they expected to rise from the water was a large, scary fish. What they got, was the figure of a man. Sharkman rose, from the water, as if he was one with it.
"Leave. Her. ALONE."
Inferno frowned.
"Oh, terrific. You again. Let me guess... You passed up 'Flyman' on the gimmick list. Because you're definatley a f#*%in' pest."
Sharkman stepped forward. Kylie looked at him, eyes widened, seeing him for the first time. Well, technically.
"Well, this is cliche. Big bad hero guy saves the girl. You know how many times I've puked, watching this crap in the movies?"
Sharkman didn't respond. He simply sped up, and uppercutted Inferno with a fierce punch, sending the firey being flying. He turned to Kylie, still shocked at his prescence.
"You okay?"
"I... I... I think... I mean, I..."
"I'll take that as a resounding yes."
Sharkman looked over, seeing the burning surfers. He looked back at Kylie.
"'Scuse me."
Without another word, Sharkman sped off, back into the ocean. A moment later, the tide began to spin. Everyone watched as the water began to rise, and circle the surfers. Moments later, the water cleared, revealing them to be put out. Sharkman stepped back out of the ocean to cheers, from the beach. Kylie smiled.
"You saved me?"
"Technically everyone. But you were on my list of priorities."
Before either of them could say anything else, Inferno began charging back at the two. Only now, he sported an angrier face, and his flames were brighter. He was 'a tad pissed' again, obviously. Sharkman looked back at her.
Alright. Hero 101. Get all civillians away from big scary guy. Even if they're still a little bit mad at you for walking in on them in the shower...
Racing forward, Sharkman picked up and lifted Kylie in his arms, before speeding away from Inferno, and to the Surf Shack. There, Gerr looked up, from hiding behind the counter. Sharkman looked at the two, putting Kylie down. It was... strange, seeing them like this. But he ignored the feeling of awkwardness long enough to focus on the situation.
"You two might want to get out of here. You know, safety reasons, and all."
As Sharkman sped back to the beach, and towards Inferno, Kylie stood, watching him. Gerr joined her.
"... That... That was..."
"The Shark dude? Yeah.", Kylie responded, mesmorised.
Gerr looked around.
"Um... Where's Mark?"
Back on the beach, Sharkman bolted forward, smashing Inferno across the face with another punch. Inferno merely grabbed his arm, and punched him in the chest.
"Big mistake, Aquaman reject."
Grabbing Sharkman by the head, Inferno threw him across the sand. Before Sharkman could get up, Inferno attempted to burn him. Sharkman ducked the blast, before tumbling forward, and across from Inferno.
"Why the hell are you doing this?!"
"Why not?! Beats the hell out of Saturday morning cartoons!"
Quickly coming to the conclusion that this wasn't a guy to negotiate with, Sharkman unsheathed the two daggers from his gloves. His version of Shark teeth. Leaping forward, Sharkman spun, slashing the daggers across Inferno's chest. Landing, Sharkman looked back, only to see Inferno's wounds glow, before sealing back up. Under the mask, his eyes widened.
...Well. That's not good.
Laughing, Inferno leaped forward, grabbing Sharkman in a headlock. Before Sharkman could fight back, the two rose from the ground, being lifted by a trail of fire that Inferno was creating.
"Yeah. I can fly, too. Pretty goddamn neat, huh?", Inferno laughed, as Sharkman struggled to get loose from his grip. Spinning, Inferno tossed Sharkman into the ocean.
"You know, before you rose from the ocean all 'Creature From The Black Lagoon' style, I didn't think you'd take your motif literally. Guess it goes to show I'm not the only freak here."
Underwater, Sharkman tumbled through it, trying to regain control of his own movements. But he could still hear Inferno, due to his hearing.
"You like the water so much? You can have it. Marry a jar of it, for all I care. But let's see how much you like it at a BOILING point..."
Sharkman's eyes widened, as the water around him began to heat up. He could feel it immediatley, due to his sense of touch. As Sharkman struggled to reach the surface before the water became too hot, He realised he couldn't focus, due to the heat affecting his energy. Eventually, He could barely move, he was beginning to lose so much breath. Tumbling back down, deeper into the ocean, Sharkman struggled for life.
This wasn't good. It definatley wasn't good...
