The New "It" Man of 2013 - Who Will Hollywood Try & Shove Down Our Throats?

I do not know about 2013, but Eddie Redmayne and Michael Fassbender are poised to become stars--or failed-attempted stars--in the very near future. I think 2012 was Tatum's breakout year. At least, the first half.

I would definitely say Fassbender is a star.

He is, but you can't ask anybody over here aside from a few internet fans to know him by visual yet.

Fassbender is a great character actor and leading man. But can he open a blockbuster by himself? Haven't seen it yet. And then there's this...

Still a fan.

^ ha that's a good one, why would Natalie be hanging out with Danny Bonaduce?

:funny: That was kinda sad.

Are people like Fassbender even trying to be some "It" Man?

Jaden Smith.

Will Smith will only come back for bad boys if Jaden replaces Martin.
Good looking out Will.

Jaden Smith is an actor I can agree on Hollywood (his parents) trying to make him a star.

And I have a feeling they may be making After Earth his I Am Legend in that a majority of the film is him on his own.

This is a confusing thread because - unless I'm reading it wrong - the guy who created this placed a negative tone on the 'IT Person' status, and listed guys who were shoved down our collective throats and but failed to live up to expectation. Guys in whom didn't capture the public's imagination (well maybe Shia to a degree) or ignite an unhealthy lust from Fanboys and Fangirls.

I think there's a difference between 'rising star' and 'it guy' because 'the it status' is an outdated measurement created by Hollywood hoping that their 'push' of this star will equal major box office. But we live in a new era: the digital age is pretty much the new wild west where 'stars' don't matter as much (only a few).

While Fassbender and Cumberbatch will be more exposed in the next few years, I don't see it as a negative because we need new stars. New talented stars that I failed to see in Taylor Kitch or Sam Worthington. Those guys were pushed arbitrarily or through sheer luck without paying as much dues as some other guys, while I was able to see guys like Fassbender, Hardy, Gosling, and Gordon-Levitt grow naturally with their indie stuff.

PS: You can argue though that Channing Tatum was the IT guy of 2012, and I actually think he deserves some of that success. He's the new Keanu: sure, I don't think he's the greatest actor but I also like his presence in most of his roles.\ and i like how he proved naysayers wrong this past year with a number of hits. GI Joe 2 underestimated his newfound fame and guess what? They're filmed more scenes with his character hence the delay. He's the meathead underdog, and he's really unique in that aspect.

Not a clue, but I'm so glad that Sam Worthington came and went, strong emphasis on the went.

Maybe Cavill if MOS takes off...no pun intended.

The guy they cast in the Hunger Games sequel to play Finnick Odair, mark my words.

In Fassbender's case he's done mainstream films like X-Men FC and Prometheus along with a couple of indie's and plus he got a few mentions during this years Oscars and he played along with Charlize Theron at the MTV movie awards, he's really talented and shouldn't worry about being the "IT" guy flavor of the month, females seem to like him even if they can't remember his name.

Another thing is he wasn't as shoved in our faces like Worthington and Tatum were this year.

Well Fassbender is a great actor. I suppose I think he could become a big star, but he still needs the vehicle to do it.

Comparing Tatum and Worthington is odd though because the general public seems to like Tatum, all of his movies were hits and women seem to love him. Hell, I loved him in 21 Jump Street and I was a huge ****ing hater before that performance. He won a lot of people over this year and seems to be blooming into an actual movie star.

Sam Worthington played in the biggest movie of 2009 but nobody was seriously claiming that he was the next Leo from Titanic. People were paying attention to James Cameron, the CGI, the 3D and how hot Zoe Saldana was even as a big blue cat creature. Worthington was the last thing people were talking about. And nobody cared about him in Salvation earlier in the year and nobody cared about him in Clash of the Titans, which only did well because of the 3D boom. He has litterally never caught on but Tatum clearly has. Thus there is no comparasion. If Tatum has a couple more hits he's a bonofied moviestar while Worthington has shown that he will never be one because he is so freakin bland and is a very bad actor.

Fassbender just comes off as a guy who likes to act/work and some of his films help pay the bills more than others.

I look at Tatum the same way as Fassbender. Only difference is that the media (and the people who care enough to follow) focus more on him since he's "young and hot."

Worthington's like the only one of the actors named in this thread that I saw as Hollywood (due to Cameron and I guess McG following along) hyping up as if he was the most awesome thing ever and that you'd want to see a movie he's in because of his name alone.

WHAT IS GOING ON!? They are fans of the Texas Longhons?!

I suppose the criteria for this is that the guy be a hack actor? Because if I had to pick one for 2012 it would have been Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is actually pretty good...but he seemed to get a ton of media coverage.

Or is it that they have to be a new actor?

I'm just not sure of the criteria here.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to be misunderstanding the initial post. Octoberist hit it right on the money.

no it doesn't mean hack actor

guys like ethan hawke and jude law were at one point shoved down our throats but are both very good actors

I can't believe that I almost forgot about this guy, Jeremy Renner. That guy was in everything this year, but he hasn't really got that 'It Factor.' I mean he was in some pretty big franchises this year, but no one really seemed to care about promoting him.

Jeremy Renner.

^ Dwayne Johnson isn't a fresh face anymore he's already been doing movies a number of years, his "IT" factor has already passed.

True, but he was doing his own thing for awhile, but once I saw him co-starring with Vin Diesel, that's when he made it in my book. He's got FOUR films coming out next year too so it will be the most bankable year of his career!

You're right and I think people seem to think he's just an up and coming actor when he's been in movies for nearly a decade already, I remember him from SWAT and before that a Jeffrey Dahmer biopic, I guess his agent is to blame for him not getting breakout roles.

And frankly while Renner is still young for the Bourne movies or possibly taking over the Mission Impossible franchise I think he'll have a longer career as an ensemble character actor instead of lead.

I agree I don't see Renner being a leading man per se, I see ensemble actor at best.
