Ugh if I had to choose between Butterfield and Holland I'd pick Butterfield simply because he's slightly better-looking and taller.
Tom Holland is better looking to me. Asa is very unusual-looking. Jeff Sneider said they're looking for someone with literally zits on their face, so Tom Holland and the mole may have an advantage. Asa's eyes are too icy for Peter, more like Harry. Tom looks friendlier.

You know what let's compare them cause why not(plus I'm shallow lol).
Butterfield has distracting blue eyes, narrow shoulders and possible first signs of receding hairline.
Holland has distracting mole on his chin, curly hair and he's short.

They both suck but Butterfield is the lesser of two evils.
Tom doesn't have the mole anymore. And I'd prefer Spidey to be shorter when compared to the rest of the team.

Totally what I think!

You can add zits with make up or send them to Maccy D's for month.

As I said before, Buttermilk has the advantage between the two of them

But I can't let go of the thought that we may get someone completely else.

(*hint* Isaac *hint*)

I wonder what DigiFicWiriter thinks???

They really sold themselves short by wanting to cast someone who could look like a 15-16 yo. You open that up just a couple years, and there's literally dozens of incredible actors you could've chosen from. And I feel like they should just be focused on making 1 great movie instead of longevity of actor/character. That's the kind of thinking that leads to multiple mediocre movies

you can't learn "comedy". you are either funny or not.

I have absolutely no preference for the role, so my comment is just a comment on whether an actor can "do comedy" or not. I'm an old guy (57 years old).....all the time I was growing up, there was a very serious actor that did tons of work. He was the general, police detective, lawyer, doctor....who never cracked a smile and never said anything funny in his movies. Then one day I hear about this comedy he is going to star in.....it's going to fail I and many others said, because he just can't do comedy. The movie was AIRPLANE. Today.....all that Leslie Nielson is known for is comedies...hardly anyone remembers his serious work.

So when I keep reading that so and so can't be funny because he has never done comedy....it just means you have never "seen" him do comedy.

Totally agreed.

If it's down to these two kids, judging by looks alone, I hope they go with Asa. Never seen these kids act in anything before. I think Marvel will pick the right kid for this. They've been trying to get the rights back to certain characters for so long, I see them being very careful with this movie, especially since this reboot #2 for good ole Spidey, and the last one didn't do as well as expected, IIRC.

If these two actors are the final two would be cool to have a poll to see which one comes out on top (in the eyes of Spider-Man fans). In the eyes of the general audience I think Asa would come out on top for simply being (relatively) well recognized.

That may be. These are the two videos that made my preference for Holland:

I just love his enthusiasm here and his recognition as an actor that he needs to convey emotion through body language rather than his face.

This one is more somber with a voice over, but I think he actually has a compelling screen presence. Peter has a lot of tragedy in his life and I think Holland could pull it off

On the other hand, with the exception of the Conan interview (which I thought was quite awkward at points), what I can find of Butterfield on youtube is pretty encouraging as well.

As a fellow short person, I'd love to see 5'6 Tom Holland have the role (although that's not why I prefer him). Asa Butterfield is listed as 5'10 which is apparently exactly the same height as Peter Parker. Plus, Charlie Cox is 5'10 so similarity of height wouldn't be a bad thing. Robert Downey Jr. is 5'9 and Jeremy Renner is 5'10 so I suppose that it makes a difference whether you want Spider-Man to contrast by being shorter or if you'd prefer they all have roughly the same height. Personally, I think this anti-short person bias has gone on long enough!

Point taken. Robert De Niro could be another example. It has been done in the past, but it seems that it is easier for a comedic actor to handle drama than a serious actor to tackle comedy. Just watch some serious actors that try to do comedy on Saturday Night Live. The only real humor sometimes is just how awkward they are trying to do the skits or monologue. And it's why Marvel predominantly cast those with comedic backgrounds.

Also, Leslie Nielson in a lot of those roles is still playing it deadpan straight, which in the situation makes it funny. Add a lot of slapstick. This is different from being a witty quipster.

It's been a little while since I've seen Airplane or any other Nielson movie, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't Leslie Nielson pretty much play a straight man in most of those movies? So he really only transitioned from "serious" to "comically serious."

EDIT: Ah, Spider-Gnome beat me to the punch!

I know he will never have any shot at this, but could CJ Adams suit Peter Parker?

I've never seen anything that Asa or Tom have been in, but when I think about a teenaged Peter Parker, the first thing that comes to my mind is Ultimate Spider-Man, and even if this new take on the character isn't based explicitly on USM, Asa looks like he could believably bring the kinds of qualities, traits, and characteristics that a 15/16-year-old Peter is most likely to possess to life easier than Tom.

For the record, the 5'10 listing is for adult Peter Parker (Marvel Universe). Teenage Peter was 5'6-5'8.

I love how people go around defining whether Jews' sense of humor is properly "Jewish" or not. I would be offended if it wasn't so bizarre. And Dark Raven said the same thing about Andrew Garfield, who is also Jewish, so that makes at least three Jews who just don't have what they're looking for (are you by any chance the person who keeps casting non-Jew Jason Biggs as a Jew over and over again on a loop? That would explain a lot).

P.S., since you presumably don't know Lerman, Chalamet, or Garfield in real life, I doubt you can tell what their sense of humor is actually like.

And what does it say about you that you would say Lerman would have that NY Jewish sense of humor on the sole basis of him being Jewish, despite not being from NY and having demonstrated very minimal humor in general, NY Jewish or not?

I'm hoping neither one nabs the role.

I want someone who isn't being touted by these scoopers. For the sake of surprise.

I mean, if Variety published a press release saying Asa or Tom, how surprised would we be considering sites like LR, BAD, and The Wrap had already reported those names?

My main point was....the very idea that Nielson could star in a comedy movie was so out side the general audience's mindset at that time, it was consider a sure thing to fail....as in a lot of people on here saying actor X has never done comedy so he can't play the quip making Spider-Man. You do not know what someone can or can not do until they try it.

Sometimes....the appearance of being a "witty quipster" is more in the editing than in what actually happens.

John Rhyse-Davies is 6'1".....he was Gimli the dwarf. Movie magic is wondeful.

I'd prefer Asa to Tom just because I know he can act. I don't think I've seen Tom in anything. I'm sure whoever gets picked, Marvel will be sure they can do humor before hiring.

Asa has a more likable personality, which is needed for Peter Parker.

You are correct in that because we have not seen them do comedy, we do not know whether they can or cannot. I personally would feel better in knowing they selected someone with a comedic background (hence my support of Dylan O'Brien). But, based on Feige's comments, I'm sure whoever they select will have demonstrated to those casting that they can pull it off.

PS: Not sure if it was intentional, but I do have a background in editing, and yes, editing can change a performance. But again, it would be much better if the humor comes naturally as opposed to constructed in the cutting room.

I have to watch years of movies with this actor. I'd prefer the best choice even if I'm not surprised when they make the announcement.
