The "Nuff Said" Marvel Universe RPG: Sign-Up/OOC Thread

I played with the thought, but I felt it may be too much to play Cap and IM. And, you know, I can't pass up a chance to harass Doctor Doom over a sum of $200.

When my men reported a crazy black man in the Fantastic Four’s craft, I knew it had to be you!

I know I said I would be joining this one, but since I am STRONGLY considering starting something for the Independents RPG (See "Best Laid Plans" thread for what that is) I run the risk of spreading myself to thin, so with that in mind I must decline joining this RPG at this time. If one of the others I'm in dry up I will be back in this one, but not now.

I guess since no one else will...

Character you would like to play (please include the color and font you plan on using to portray the character):

Tony Stark red
Iron Man red lucida sans unicode bold

Brief History (provide at least two sentences):

Originally an arms dealer, Tony Stark was kidnapped and forced to create weapons for a dangerous organization. He instead created the Iron Man suit and destroyed the facility, crippling the organization, before escaping and returning to his company. The event changed Tony and forced him to remold his company into one that interests lie in technological and societal advancement.

All the major events in Iron Man's history have happened.
Obidiah Stane/ Demon in the bottle
Armor Wars I and II
Making his identity as Iron Man public
Stint as Secretary of Defense
Extremis

I think I will stop there to avoid the Civil War and director of SHIELD stories. I feel like it's better for the RPG to not include those events.

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable):

Avengers

Explain what you plan to do with the character you've chosen and why you've chosen this character:

I plan to take a more mecha approach to Iron Man. Don't get worried, what I mean by that probably is not what you think. I've always loved the Iron Man stories that aren't stereotypical of his character. I plan to write a few stories with Tony that have him fighting more than just mechanized clones of Iron Man while also focusing on Tony's character as the head of Stark Enterprises.

Midtown

Mayhem ensues as screams fill the air. A car flies down the street, crashing into a storefront and causing rubble to dribble down onto the sidewalks. A single teal giant stands at the center of the chaos. The fire around him illuminates his beastly figure, and lights up the teeth of his twisted grin.

"Come on, humans!" The monster growls as he lifts up another car. "You must try harder!"

A spray of bullets suddenly hit his face, bouncing off his thick skin in tiny sparks and flashes. He is unharmed by the attack, but distracted none the less. He turns his gaze toward the source of the gunfire.

"Put it down, Blonsky," a woman speaks as she rolls out from behind a piece of debris. Adorned on her shoulder is the SHIELD crest - a badge reading "Hill" over her chest. She aims her firearm at the creature's face. "Now."
"Hahahaha. You still try that, do you? You should know by now that doesn't work."
"I may not take you down," she says as she loads the barrel. "But I'll bet a couple to the cornea will sting like you wouldn't believe."

As the creature fixes himself on her, she places her finger to her earpiece and begins to speak. "Stark, where are you? I don't know how much longer I can hold out here."
"Well, you did catch me in the middle of a business meeting. I couldn't just walk out on them. What kind of image for my company would I be promoting then?" She frowns as her patience wears thin.

Abomination begins to approach her; his feet are heavy with every step. Maria lets off a few shots, hitting the behemoth in his face, but just missing his eyes. He laughs, amused by her attempts. "I can't wait to step on you. Put you in your place." She fires again, hitting him directly in the iris of his eye.

He growls in rage as he drops the car to the ground behind him. He puts his hand to his face and begins to writhe in pain. A smirk comes over Maria's face as she watches his agony. "I warned you. Now, stand down."

Suddenly, Abomination lifts his face from his hands to reveal a terrifying grin. "Gotcha." The muscles in his legs become tense and the ground around his feet crumbles into rocks and pebbles. He lunges toward her with impressive strength and speed. Maria closes her eyes and stumbles back as she awaits the attack.

A screeching crackle resounds throughout the street. A bolt of blue energy brushes past Maria's head and strike Abomination in the center of his chest, propelling him backward a few hundred yards. As Maria opens her eyes, she watches a red and gold flash fly past her. In its wake stray papers and trash fly up into the air in a whirlwind.

The rocket flies into Abomination just as he lifts himself from the floor. As it makes contact, the creature flies back into the side of a parked truck, sending shrapnel in all directions. As Maria focuses, she sees the identity of the sudden protector; Iron Man hovers above the ground gently before dropping to the asphalt below. Smoke repels from his feet as he turns his head to face her. "Miss me?" He asks, his cocky tone unobscured by the mechanized voice.

She holds back a smile, too proud herself to let him know her gratitude. "If you had been here when I first contacted you, we could've saved ourselves a lot of collateral damage." She rises to her feet as she slips the gun into the holster on her leg. "I guess I should thank you."
"Why start now?"

"Uhnnn," Abomination groans as he begins to stir. He steps forth from the wreckage, stumbling slightly. Iron Man raises his hand to the creature as he takes aim. The blue circle at the center of his palm begins to glow brightly, and a electronic squeal begins to resonate.

"Stay down, Blonsky. I increased the energy output of my repulsors. The next one will break even your skin."
He snarls as a smirk grows over his face. "I'd like to test that, actually."
Tony smiles beneath his helmet. "I was hoping you would."

Character you would like to play (please include the color and font you plan on using to portray the character): Eddie Brock/Venom

Brief History (provide at least two sentences):

Eddie Brock was a journalist, a reporter working for the Daily Globe. After reporting a story exposing the identity of the serial killer Sin-Eater, the masked hero Spider-Man ruined his success by capturing the real killer, revealing that Brock had reported a compulsive confessor. Fired from his job and disgraced in the field, Eddie became terminally depressed, his life crumbling all around him, until he was driven to suicide. By a horrific coincidence, the church in which he prayed for forgiveness was the very same one whose bell tower Spider-Man used to rid himself of his alien symbiote costume. The symbiote found Brock and bonded with him, two spirits becoming one to destroy the man who ruined both of their lives.

"Wallet and phone. C'mon, let's have it!"

The terrified couple were all but pinned to the wall as a trio of leering muggers held them at gunpoint. While the man fumbled in his pockets for his wallet and cell phone, the young woman pulled her jacket around herself tightly in an attempt to cover up a dress she now considered much too revealing.

"Okay, okay, here you go," the man said, his hand trembling as he handed over his billfold. "There's two hundred bucks in there, and three credit cards. It's all I've got, I swear!"

The mugger with the pistol sneered, casting his eyes on the young woman.

"You're free to go, pal," he said, "but your lady friend's staying with us for a while."

"What? No!" she yelped as grubby hands began pawing at her.

"Don't worry, babe, we'll show you a good t--*HRKK!*

The mugger's taunts were cut off into a surprised gurgle, before a wad of blood spewed from his mouth. His victims were just as surprised as he was to see a long black spike emerging from his abdomen.

The man crumpled to the ground in a bloody heap, his cohorts and his victims staring in stunned horror as a massive black form lowered itself from above, slimy tendrils lashing to the wall to climb down the brick walls.

The hideous form touched ground in front of the mugger's corpse, more than half again the size of a man, black skin crawling with a life of its own. The creature's face consisted of blank white eyes and a wide maw of slavering fangs, out of which writhed a long slobbering tongue.

"Oh God, oh God, what do you want?" the woman whimpered.

"From you? Nothing," it said, an almost human voice masked by a deep monstrous snarl. "The innocent will be spared."

It looked over to the two other muggers, and drooled as it bared its long dagger-like teeth.

"Everyone else, though? Not so much."

Titanium Man

Brief History (provide at least two sentences):

Someone has gotten their hands on the designs for the dreaded armor of the Titanium Man! The unknown pilot of the Titanium Man has been sighted throughout Europe, committing assassinations of prominent scientists, executives, and politicians. Experts have been baffled as to what his goal could possibly be, or where he'll strike next. All that is known about the villain is that, with his nigh-indestructible armor, he is capable of flight, energy blasts, enhanced speed, and seemingly unstoppable brute strength. He appears to possess the knowledge to use his equipment effectively, as well as tactical experience to plan his attacks with surgical precision. Whoever is under that helmet is a criminal mastermind.

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable):

N/A

Explain what you plan to do with the character you've chosen and why you've chosen this character:

Honestly, I am recycling some of my Titanium Man ideas that I had planned to use in the One Earth RPG before real life became more of a priority. While the basics of those ideas remain the same (such as the identity of the pilot, the broad strokes of what his ultimate goal is, and some of the story beats), I'm essentially starting from scratch with him. The person under the armor is an established Marvel villain, but the anonymity of the armor and the powers that it grants him allow him to do things that he wouldn't be able to accomplish otherwise. The story that I have for him is very much in line with his kind of schtick, but I can approach it in a new way for the character that I'm pretty enthusiastic for.

The force of the thrust beneath my feet gives a feeling of exhilaration that I almost scold myself for enjoying. No matter how many times I strap myself into this heavy mechanical contraption, I don't believe that I will ever get fully accustomed to it. That is not to say that it is difficult to control. Quite the opposite, actually. The interface and capabilities of the armor are actually very intuitive. Of course, they are specifically designed to be so. If they weren't easy to grasp, it could easily cost the pilot his life within the very first moments of donning the armor. To be killed by one's own clothes, no matter how deadly they may be, would be beyond embarrassing.

Nevertheless, the skill required to pilot the suit is not to be underestimated. Originally designed to be the equivalent to a wearable tank, the Titanium Man is intended to fly through a building rather than around it, for example. After much training, I have seen the suit to be capable of a far higher degree of delicacy in its aerial acrobatics. Why, I could even give Tony Stark himself a run for his money at this rate of practice.

"No time for such trivialities, unfortunately," I remark quietly, with the artificial buzz of my disguised voice bringing me back to the task at hand. "There are far more important matters at hand." The targeting systems in my helmet start locking on to the limousine of the CEO that has earned my ire. Civilian casualties are minimal, according to estimates. Missiles are locked. "Engage target."

So, I know it was quickly shot down in the Approval thread, but I think this warrants more discussion: getting this RPG into the Marvel Comics forum. If the admins don't respond, that means they don't care. Just ask the mods for permission and let's do this!

Oh, and since the GMs apparently still haven't made up their mind between my Doom app and Rain Dog's, I'm gonna go ahead and cede to RD. Honestly, his app looks like he's got a better handle on the character.

IC thread's up

And with that, the 24 hour policy is null and void. Everyone else is going to be first come, first serve.

So I decided not to go with that app I was thinking about, MB.

Character you would like to play (please include the color and font you plan on using to portray the character): Wolverine

Brief History (provide at least two sentences): Born in the 1880s, the mutant now known as Wolverine has seen more in his life than most. His powerful healing factor has slowed his aging greatly, and has allowed him to live an incredibly long life. He's served in both World Wars, and was then later captured by the Weapon X program. The program wiped his memory and bonded the unbreakable metal adamantiuam to his bone structure, making Logan virtually indestructible.

For years Logan wandered before joining with the X-Men. With them, he found a home, and a purpose. He's become a true hero and protector of mutant kind in the decade since he's joined the team, even after him and his team split from Scott Summers and the others on Utopia.

Wolverine now runs his own school, the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, as well as fighting on the X-Force and The Avengers.

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable): X-Men (Team Wolverine); X-Force; The Avengers

Explain what you plan to do with the character you've chosen and why you've chosen this character: I plan on dealing with the aftermath of the X-Men Schism, as well as Logan being the headmaster of a school, some black ops X-Force stories, as well as jumping in when the Avengers need him. Logan's character juggles so much, and he offers a ton of story potential.

I've never been a huge Wolverine fan. I always found him to be a simple character without much true motivation. But the past few years that's been changing, and seeing as the X-Men are the only worthwhile characters in current Marvel continuity, I figured I'd give one a try. Plus, he's part of the Avengers, so I don't have to worry about being caught in the X-Men curse.

There are times when I wonder why I did it. Why I left Summers and Utopia behind and took the burden of caring for these kids squarely on my shoulders. Why I started a school knowing we'd be the targets of madmen and murders. Why I took even more of a load knowing I'd have to go fight another damned battle with the Avengers or X-Force.

But then I look at these kids and it all makes sense. The thought almost makes me chuckle. Me, the Wolverine, gettin' all teary eyed over a bunch of brats. But they're my brats. And I'll be damned if Summers was going to turn them into soldiers. I don't care how desperate Mutant kind is right now. I was forced to be a soldier. I won't let that happen to them.

Kitty Pryde comes up from behind me and taps me on the shoulder, "Logan, you've got a call."

"Who is it?" I ask, not taking my eyes off the grounds of my school.

"Uh...Deadpool."

Sighing, "Just what I need."

My comfort zone!!!1! NOOOOOO!!!!!!

I'm gonna say right now that I've got my eye on applying for the Taskmaster as well. I just want to come up with a story for him first, before committing to the character. And I'd like to fully ignore the recent retcons made to Tasky, for reasons Corp and Nathan state here.

Tasky's one I had my eye on as well...

Have something in mind too, but I still have to get my damn paper done first.

Before it does, does anyone care if my version on Moon Knight doesn't have multiple personalities? I've never enjoyed that aspect of the character. Dude was betrayed, killed and resurrected by an ancient Egyptian Moon God to seek vengeance on those who commit injustices. Him being crazy is just overkill and quite frankly I think its a direct result of writers trying too hard to say "Look! See! He's not like Batman!"

My thing is: So what if he's like Batman? Batman rocks!

Lets just say I'm more in love with the concept of the character then what most writers have done with him and I want to take that concept and do it the way I want. Of course you guys (particularly the GMs) can stop me. Hence the asking if everyone's cool.

(I shoulda just introduced him in the OE RPG and played him there dammit)

That's what I was thinking. Marc is over his disorder, and is trying to do right and redeem himself for his past mistakes. He's moved back to New York and has no powers other than training, wealth, special equipment and a mandate from an angry God.

I thought about that but I think it might be beyond my abilities. Dude is just such a mess.

Maybe my first post can be Marc coming back to New York, mind intact, and I can gloss over how he left the country for awhile for psychiatric treatment?

You guys hate me now huh? I can just imagine what's going on in your heads

"Gaah! If you didn't want to play MK the way he is why did you apply for him!!"

Well I did it cause he's cool dammit!
Well it is supposed to be roughly ten years in... And prior to Huston's run (where he was making his long, long return to heroics - from a period you could say has been well over ten years) dissociative personality disorder only came up in pretty much one issue (a one-shot somewhat-poetically written by a guy called Steven Grant, who played further on the 4 identities/4 phases of the moon angle that Moensch kick-started).

So I wouldn't think it would be going too far to ask if you could white-out around it. Given the 'ten-year' thing you could argue that it just isn't in continuity at the point you started...

To be honest, I'm surprised Marvel haven't at least developed how he had a full blown mental breakdown and split into the 4 personalities yet... with his CIA history, you'd think they could come up with a pretty good story for it (since they've used said CIA history to explain why he's somewhat resistant to psychic attacks before).

One issue? Moon Knight's had these identities and the trouble that come with them since the first issue of his own title.

One issue? Moon Knight's had these identities and the trouble that come with them since the first issue of his own title.

Which title? His first volume had him psychologically sane.

I remember the first issue noting that Marlene felt uneasy with how Marc acted when he pretended to be Jake Lockley. Might be remembering wrong, though.

Character you would like to play (please include the color and font you plan on using to portray the character):

The Taskmaster

Brief History (provide at least two sentences):

Growing up in the Bronx, the child who would one day become Taskmaster discovered early on that he had the rare gift of what he would call "photographic reflexes." He would watch a cowboy on Saturday morning television perform tricks with a lasso, and found that he could reproduce the technique with perfect accuracy without any practice at all. As he got older the unnamed youth used this talent to gain popularity and acclaim, once even carrying his high school football team to the championships after watching only a single professional game. The man once considered the possibility of using his gift to become a superhero, but decided against it because there was no profit in such a career. Instead, the man created the costumed guise of the Taskmaster for himself, equipped with replicas of various pieces of equipment used by those whose skills he has acquired by watching them in action on TV, the internet, or even in combat. He has established a number of profitable underground schools to train supervillains' henchmen, and will even take on mercenary jobs himself if the price is right. A professional and pragmatist to his core, Taskmaster is not out to settle any personal vendetta with heroes, and is not against running from a fight if it's not going his way. Still, the man has shown to have the skills and experience to go toe to toe with the Avengers on occasion, and as such is a formidable opponent.

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable):

Whoever is paying his bills.

Explain what you plan to do with the character you've chosen and why you've chosen this character:

I think that I've come up with a decent story for him and I've got a fondness for the idea of returning to the character after playing him the first time waaaay back in the early years of Heroes Vs. Villains, and doing new things with him. And we can always use more PC villains to give the heroes something to do, even if Tasky isn't always strictly a villain. His moral ambiguity is something that I've always loved to play around with.

"Well, looks like you're home early." This is not what I'm being paid for, dammit.

Step 1: Infiltrate the Baxter Building without the most advanced security system in the world detecting me.
Step 2: Steal Richards' time machine.
Step 3: Exfiltrate and make a clean getaway.
Step 4: Profit.

Step 3 seems to be where I've gotten a little hung up. I made sure that the Fantastic Four would be gone when I started the heist, timing it so that they would be off on their scheduled mission to space, but I wasn't expecting them to come back until tomorrow. You can probably guess where I'm at now, dodging the Thing's rocky fists and blocking an assault of fireballs being thrown at me. I can only guess that the invisible lady and Reed Richards are busy with something else right now, thank God. The last thing I need right now is to be trapped in an invisible force field, or to be taken out of the fight by the wonders of science!

"C'mon, Grimm. You're not gonna tag me. So let's say we all go our separate ways. No harm, no foul."

All I need is to find an elevator or a window to make a getaway. C'mon! I've been moving this fight from room to room, looking for some sort of exit without any luck for the last five minutes! With the energy projector around my wrist, I let loose a canopy of webbing onto the Thing and flip over his head. Sure, I can dodge circles around him all day, but I can't let myself get too cocky. All he needs is to connect with one solid hit and I'll be done for.

Then I see it.

A window! Yes!

Making a break for it, I feel the scorching heat of the Human Torch's blasts missing me by mere inches, but I can't let that stop me when I'm so close! Energy constructs of a certain scruffy mutant's claws sprout from my hands as I dive for the window and rip through the glass like a hot knife through butter. I just need to websling down to the street and I'll be home free...

And we can always use more PC villains to give the heroes something to do, even if Tasky is always strictly a villain. His moral ambiguity is something that I've always loved to play around with.

The "Nuff' Said" Marvel Universe Application

Character you would like to play (please include the color and font you plan on using to portray the character): The Black Knight (Dane Whitman) (Century Gothic, dark blue)

Brief History (provide at least two sentences): Dane Whitman first took up the mantle of the Black Knight in a misguided attempt to revenge his uncle, the villainous Masters of Evil's Black Knight. In his very first clash with the Avengers, he realized the error of his ways and was soon welcomed into that esteemed group. A stalwart Avenger through many of the team's incarnations, Dane spent years contributing his skills in the art of war--honed in a years-long excursion to the Crusades--as well as his considerable expertise in the fields of both science and magic to the team's cause. Unfortunately, his heroic aims have been tainted over the years time and again by the Ebony Blade, a mystical weapon inextricably entwined with his family line for generations, and the powerful, bloodthirsty curse it carries. He struggles in the face of this and all other adversities to this day, now as a member of the UK's team of elite superpowered operatives called MI-13, proving himself a true hero time and again.

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable): MI-13 (current member), Avengers (former member), Ultraforce (former member), Heroes for Hire (former member)

Explain what you plan to do with the character you've chosen and why you've chosen this character: I've chosen the Black Knight because he's a great character and one of my favorites. Unfortunately, he's also never been able to carry a series on his own, so he's jumped around from team book to team book, leaving him with an impressive accumulation of unresolved plot threads. Most recently, MI-13 left him with a heart turned to stone by a former love then healed by his new one, the burden of the true Ebony Blade once more on his shoulders, and a means of coping with his blood curse by staying upbeat and flippant.

Basically, my goal with Dane in the RPG is to explore his relationship with the Ebony Blade now that his heart is no longer stone and he's every bit as susceptible to negative emotions as positive. I don't want to give too much away beyond that.

Please provide a small sample post with original content in the style that you plan to write your character in (must be at least 3 paragraphs long and contain at least one line of dialogue):

Garrett Castle
England

"I can hear your heart beat."

Faiza raised her head from Dane's chest and looked up at him. "I know, it's been a while now since it returned to normal, but I still can't get over it."

Dane sat slumped on the couch and studied her features as the TV droned behind her. He wanted to tell her it didn't just "return to normal," she had returned it to normal; he owed his life to her thrice over, and more besides. He wanted to tell her he fell in love with her all over again every time he looked at her. He wanted to... to...

... Strip the flesh from her bones!

NO!

The voice had been playing through Dane's mind for years now, its familiar urges dripping with malice and scorn. The Ebony Blade. It wanted blood, Dane knew. It didn't care where the blood came from. Worse, it had been getting stronger lately, harder to tune out. He found his mind drifting to thoughts of blood whenever he was careless enough to let it wander. Blood... so wet and warm... so sticky and... delicious.

And there it is, right on cue. Dane barely stopped himself from grimacing. The vampiric sword Dracula had created as a stand-in for the Ebony Blade was still tied to him every bit as much as the true Ebony Blade. Faiza's love had reversed whatever Sersi had done to turn his heart to stone. He thought that was a good thing--how could it not be? Yet Sersi had called it a gift. Something to keep him "above it all." He had been wondering more and more lately whether she'd known what she was talking about after all; the weight of two cursed swords, each jockeying for its chance to drive him utterly mad, bore down on him constantly, and it took more effort to push free of it and find some semblance of himself every day.

He told himself he was coping; he hadn't actually taken a life since the Skrull invasion, so the blades were running on fumes. They shouldn't be calling to him this strongly. Shouldn't--yet they were. And in the darkest recesses of his mind, the tiny black pit at the back where he put on an upbeat attitude and cracked jokes to keep himself from going, lay the thought that haunted him constantly: Something has to give. Maybe not today, maybe not even a year from now, but someday, in spite of all his best efforts, in spite of the 'good man' he'd managed to fool his friends, his teammates, even Faiza into believing he must be... someday, he'd slip.

But what was the alternative? Let the blades' burden fall onto some other poor bastard? Some innocent fool who may or may not be able to deal with it as well as Dane?
Should he watch as reports of a new Bloodwraith, corrupted by the Ebony Blade's foul magic and tearing through the streets of London, played on the evening news, content that, hey, at least it wasn't his problem anymore? He knew that wasn't an option. Even if the curse weren't rightly his responsibility--a terrible heirloom thrust on a number of his ancestors before finding its way to him--he knew he could never live with himself if it robbed someone else of their life--not if he had it in his power to prevent that.

But dwelling on it would only make things worse, he knew. So he forced a smile with every bit of strength in him, gave Faiza a peck on the forehead, and said, "Yep, I'm a real boy now, all thanks to my fairy girlfriend. Now would you quit trying to make me blush? I'm trying to watch the game!"

Awesome. I came this close to having Black Knight show up on the Secret Avengers squad in my sample.
