I know it's still reaching and utter bull****, but I assumed J'onn was overwhelmed by Black Adam because he wasn't used to being in the mind of a remorseless genocidal maniac. No telepathy on Adam's part. J'onn was just shaken to his core that someone would willingly kill so many and just not care.

Still, that doesn't make much sense. He was written as if he'd never met an evil bastard before. If this was some Teen Titan with telepathy going emo, I'd understand. But J'onn? He lived through the near-extinction of his entire race. I doubt the mind of a really pissed-off widower is anything new to him.
