A smart filmmaker would be able to handle a and b. Having both in the same film can also allow for some interesting parallelism and a deeper study of certain themes.

I never want spidey to be a co star in his own movie but if there is one villian I wouldn't mind spidey playing second fiddle to, it's lizard. the lizard's story is so gripping and compelling if you aren't going to do the story justice leave it along and pick a villian who's backstory is neither here nor there like mysterio.
They're based on Marvel Comic book characters that I grew up on, which I love, I have to see them at least once in theaters, they deserve at least that. Yeah, I'm gonna see Avengers too. Anything Transformers I'll just download.And yet Kaw you keep watching the marvel studio movies.You don't have watch them you know.I am sure you will be the first to see Avengers and Transformers 4
I agree!
Which is why I think having Lizard in a film about Spider-Man's origin is worrying me a little even though the film looks great so far.
Marc Webb is a brilliant character developer. I only hope the whole big budget and the pressure from fans, and the studio doesn't get to him and he feels he has to cut that.my two favorite spider-man villians are doc ock (which sam knocked out of the park) and lizard. I love lizard because;
a) he is a vilian grafted onto a good man so the dichotomy is compelling.
b) peter knows the man and the villian so it's a choice of whether to bring him to justice or not.
c) the lizard has his own supoorting cast (billy/mrs. conners)
a three dimentional villian and I will weep bitter tears if the character isn't done justice I will finally get how the venom fans felt after SM3 (hate venom).
as I said earlier, I'm calling it right now;
a) you'll see little of the conners family
b) conners will get his arm back (the reason for the experiement in the first place) and transform into the lizard all in one transformation. no joy at succeeding in getting his arm back, no happy time with his family.
c) no degredation of personality/sprit, he'll be normal as conners and villianous as lizard
d) no choice for peter whether to bring in conners or turn him into the police
betcha! with the origin there is no time to do lizard justice.
That would make sense.
Gwen was never a part of the origin story in the comics. She didn't appear until Peter went to college in Amazing Spider-Man # 31, though the same applies to Harry.
basically if you were given a straight choice between;
a) how peter parker becomes spider-man
1. loner nerd
2. spider bite
3. experimenting with powers
4. letting killer escape
5. uncle ben murder
and
b) the slow deterioration of conners in mind and body
1. introduction to family
2. experiement gives him his arm back
3. happiness of being whole again
4. personality change
5. lizard first change
6. coping with the monster inside
7. full on lizard change
two extremely complex storylines and every minute spent on 'a' is a minute taken away from 'b' and vice verser. so what do you choose because I don't think you can have both. one storyline will be fleshed out with the other storyline paired down or both will be watered down.
oh I know that, but I meant that Gwen was the first girl he ever loved (I know he went out with Betty Brant, but I dont think he loved her, so to me it doesnt count), not MJ, like Raimi made it in Spider-Man, and many of the GA, while aware of the origin, is not aware of who Gwen Stacy is. (other than her part in SM3, which is a misconception.) I probably should have been more clear about that.
I agree with this, but it's not something I'm too concerned about, as a movie you usually have two storylines, an a line and a b line, only one is usually more predominant than the other which is the protaganist's. However, I hope in this one that the Conners storyline will be and the origin b, as with the origin though they are doing it again, there is stuff available that they can skip over, or speed up, while still keeping the central stuff there. Conners however, I agree that they shouldn't skip over or take shortcuts over any of it.
10 days until the trailer, if it is really being released with Tintin or Dragon Tattoo.
I'd expect they'd release sometime before rather than using WB's scheme of makkng people spend more money by going to a movie they really don't want to see in order to see footage.
Plus, Am I the only who thinks they might actually release the SDCC footage along with a shorter version (which would count as the theatrical trailer)?
It would be a great way to compete with the TDKR prologue.
Is the TDKR footage being released online?! I hope so. I'm not going to see MI4 for it...
If they're following TDK's marketing (which they seem to be very closely) then don't expect anything more than a bottleg to appear on line as far as teh prologue goes.

there the a prologue for TDK and if there was, what was it?
the opening scene with the Joker's heist
so it isn't extra footage? hmm, I think I'd prefer to miss the prologue then but I have to see it because I'm seeing MI:GP and the imax I am seeing it at is showing the prologue.
I think both can be handled well in a single film. Most great movies have more than one storyline running through them, some even with three. It takes a skill in the knowledge of the characters and knowing how to execute character development to pull it off well. You can make an entire movie with only one subject and one storyline and it can still turn out like a piece of sh--. There's always going to be something that someone wants to see MORE of or LESS of even without an origin story, the ironic thing is, the origin story could turn out to be the best part of this film.basically if you were given a straight choice between;

Not surprised in the least, lol.The TDKR prologue will definitely not be put online officially.

Of course we all hope that THE LIZARD story is great, but cutting out the origin part doesn't gaurantee that this will happen. Having two stories of science and tragedy intertwining together may actually make for a stronger movie overall, through better writing and performance. Of course we don't know any of this for sure. So we are all on a wait and see speculation circle for now. It could all go belly up for many different reasons.
For me, I love "COMIC BOOK-LIKE" movies (Alien, Terminator 2, The Matrix, Predator, Blade Runner, etc.) more than actual comic book movies. It's because they capture the very essence of what and how a comic book film should be made. Still til this day, other than The Dark Knight, no comic book movie can f--- with those films. No matter how much money you throw at them or how much they make at the box office.
