it isn't about 'keeping up with the jones' it's about releasing the right material at the right time and with a villian as pivatol as the lizard the right time is when the CG is perfect and I'm sure that's what the hold up is.

if sony could get away with another trailer without showing the villian they would do it but they've already show a trailer with no villian so another purely spidey trailer wont cut it.

And lots of movies release trailers during the holiday season. MIB3 just released a trailer and that comes out before TASM. I understand them wanting to put their best foot forward, but I think they can do that at this point and this is the right time to do so.

They might just show a glimpse of the Lizard in the trailer (if at all) and if that's the case I think they've had plenty of time to perfect the CG.

it took them 2 years to perfect the train sequence and the villian is human with metal arms that you'd have to assume are easy to reproduce in CG

as someone who works with CG, organic material is ridiculously hard to reproduce realistically in CG, that's why movies like LotR and avatar are an absolute triumph. you have to skin the multiple passes like specular and light it perfectly so the character looks like it is actually in the scene.
avengers, TDKR, well spidey has by far the most difficult CG brief.
honestly the delay doesn't surprise me at all.

if I were giving advice to the editer for the trailer I would show a glimps of the eyes, a snap cut of the tail and the lizard in shadow but I wouldn't fully show the lizard until the movie. use the extra few months to perfect the effects.

As a fan I want to see Lizard in all his glory right away, but in truth you are absolutely right. Sony shouldn't blow their wad and reveal lizard a half year before the movie comes out. They should do minor reveals of glimpses of bodyparts and get everything perfect before releasing into the world. Absolutely.

But that also makes it susceptible to EXTREME nitpicking when the trailer finally DOES come out and the CG isn't the best CG EVER. At this point people are expecting it to trump Avatar.

Had Sony been smart they would have planned ahead a bit and focus first on the CG that will appear in the trailer. I don't think they quite understand how much they need to sell this movie to the general audience after the horrible Spiderman 3 and this being an origin story again.

As I said before. When we had spidey 3 comin out we had a trailer in early nov, behind the scenes exclusive on thanksgiving, toys and a trailer in march. Tv spots during April. They should be marketing the he'll outta this movie like they did with spidey 3.

bottom line is I don't think it's a big deal to not show the trailer in december. the movie will have 6 MONTHS to market to the general audience and also you have the superbowl in feb.

some people like spoilers, I hate them, I like to come to movies as fresh as possible. if I had willpower I'd avoid trailers.

I agree spider-neil! The best would be to not even know about the movie until it's out haha :P but it's impossible for me not to give in and watch stuff like this bootleg.
