To be honest, Routh looks more like Nightwing or the Kyle Rayner-Green Lantern to me.

(Looks down with an upset look and an annoyed 7 year old voice)

Can we see it please?

I haven't been to this board in a while. I have a few questions about Bryan Singer's choice for this role--Mr. Routh--and I would very much like it if someone would answer them. I just don't have time to sift through the hundreds of posts about him on this board.

My first question is this: Is Brandon Routh gay? Back when he was first cast in this role the immediate speculation was that he was gay (given that Singer is gay and that Singer has cast at least two gay actors in his films and also because Routh has played at least two gay characters in TV shows) and people even claimed to have access to his Friendster account and to have met him at "gay parties." I don't believe any of that garbage. But someone said in a post that he was openly gay. Is this true? If you answer, please don't say you've met Routh; just point to hard facts. And just to pacify the PC Police, I do have problems with a gay man playing Superman. However, if Routh is so good in the role that it would have been ridiculous not to cast him, I'm fine with it. To be honest, I'd prefer the film to have a gay actor and a gay subtext (as has also been alleged) than to have it be a "tribute film" to 25-year old films, which is what it is shaping up to be.

My second question is this: Can Routh act whatsoever? My only exposure to him has been in his "walk-ons" (I won't even dignify them as cameos) on "Gilmore Girls" and "Will & Grace." I caught the last ten minutes of his "Cold Case" episode, but didn't even really see him speak (was it a substantial role?). From those appearances I of course can't judge his acting. So I'm asking anyone who saw him on "One Life to Live" or "Undressed" (I watched that show but don't recall him) to give me an honest opinion on his acting. Devin Faraci, a commentator on C.H.U.D., says he has friends who worked on the soap who told him that the guy couldn't act whatsoever.

Please take time to honestly answer my questions to you.

Brandon is not gay and he sounds like Tom Cruise. As for his acting well we don't really know yet but he has got a small role in an upcoming film so who knows what we'll see.

Hi BH/HHH:

I thank you for replying. You say he isn't gay, but where did you get that information, considering that the overwhelming opinion is that he is gay?

Concerning his acting, I did hear him speak on "Gilmore Girls" and he sounds more like a frat boy than a commanding Superman. I visited the site for "Deadly" and his part is probably very small. What are we to make of him when he's been acting for six years and has yet to even land a regular role which sticks (he was apparently fired from the soap for bad acting)? He seems like a loser actor.

If he is gay, I just hope that his casting wasn't some sort of "casting couch" situation or a queasy affirmative action situation. If he turns out to give a sub-Keanu Reeves/Mischa Barton/Sarah Michelle Gellar performance (truly trash) then it will seem that he was cast only because he is gay. I realize we all seem to be working this guy over as if he were running for public office but, damn it, if he screws up this film he'll be a villain!

If you want to continue thinking he's gay, fine.

But, I can tell you that this really laughable rumor started at Comic Book Resources' Rich Johnston, writer for the column "Lying in the Gutters." He said that Singer has a gay agenda and was looking to cast a gay actor in the role so that he can out him. Riiiight.

I don't know how i know I can't remember I just know I remember reading suumit.

I'm just asking for facts one way or the other, IT. You run a fan site on Routh--have you met him? If you haven't, then you can't say for sure that the Johnston column (which I saw a few months ago) isn't true. Singer has been described as a gay activist and, certainly, his great "X-Men" films are overtly gay-themed (and that is appropriate for those films, since "mutant" can mean "gay," "black" or whatever repressed minority you choose). However, it isn't appropriate for Superman. What facts do you have?

So what if he's gay?

Ian McKellan's gay and you don't see his performances getting affected by it.

Somehow, I think a column called "Lying in the Gutters" is appropriate for a guy like Johnston.

What makes the difference? If he can pull the part off it shouldn't matter if he is or isn't. Man this stuff is getting really OLD!

Rich is actually a nice guy, I've had the pleasure to interact with him a bit over a maillarworld, he's just the messanger, not the source, so the guy deserves a bit of slack considering he does have good rumors from time to time. Also he just had a baby, so congrats to him.

I can't help but believe that while your posts "sound" as if you are seeking some background information in a legitimate forum, you in fact are trying to drive an agenda that consists of belittleing the choice of Routh as Superman. You ask for facts regarding his sexuality but how is that even remorely relevent to his perfromance? Its as if you're asking the age old question "Do you still beat your wife" knowing that any answer is a bad answer. Wait until you see the movie then you can decide if Routh was a good choice or not.

The message is still a chunk of gutter trash heresay, which reflects pretty poorly on the messenger.

That being said, I think you're a nice guy, Watchman. ;)

Can't argue with that, but for the most part I'm all about cutting people slack.
