The Official Contest of Marvels 3 Discussion Thread

Keep
3-D Man
Annex
Bengal
Constrictor
Cloud Girl
Crusader
Gauntlet
Hardball
Justice
K.I.A.
Komodo
Prodigy (Ritchie Gilmore)
Rage
Slapstick
Sunstreak
Trauma
Ultra Girl

Potential
Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady)
Gorilla Girl
Mutant Zero - I'm iffy because we don't know who she is yet. Otherwise I'd say yes.
Scarlet Spider (MVP) - They usually come in groups, but I think only 1 should represent them. Otherwise you have a group of Spider-Men fighting together each round.

Drop
Armory
Baron Von Blitzschlag
Debrii
Diamond Back
Geiger
Melee

Crusader isn't the Skrull version, right?

Mutant-Zero seems pretty undefined (from the bio I read).

Otherwise, it looks fine.

Crusader is indeed the Skrull, but he's been an individual character since before Secret Invasion, and SI only aided in fleshing him out bigtime. He's been one of the biggest players of the Avengers: Initiative for the past year. Plus there's more to him than just being a Skrull, he's a hero with a ring that alters reality within his range. He's awsome! And he pretty much saved the world from the final act of the Secret Invasion, even when the other heros thought it was all over. He took out Skrullojacket! (not that you know much about that since you haven't read it, but he basically took out the final major warrior of the invasion).

Man... just thinking about it. If Phobos does still have the knowledge of his samarai skills...he could totally take out the Sentry without breaking a sweat. His fear stare will revert Sentry to a coward as always, and then just kick the crap out of his Bob persona with his samarai sword and butt kicking skills.

OR his fear stare could cause the Void to come out then Phobos (and anyone around him) would likely be dead.

Here is my thinking about the first list presented by JH.

Keep
Ares
Count Nefaria
Marvel Boy (Noh-Varr)
Quake
Nick Fury
Maria Hill
Sentry - I think we should put him in. I really don't see him being more powerful than some of the characters in this contest. Plus, there are character flaws that a wise character could use to their advantage for the win, I think.

Potential
Morgan Le Fay - I'm always cautious on magic users. She seems a bit too powerful to me though.
Viper

Drop
Collective - TOO UBER - The power of Billions of Mutants!
Phobos - Ares' son - I don't see that much information on this character.

To make things easy we could just go with Ronin and assume he has his bow.

We can say Ronin, but if the person who gets him goes into it knowing the Hawkeye persona is better for the match, then they can switch. The thing with this character is if the opponent does not know Ronin is Hawkeye in the current Marvel Universe, that is something to be used to Clint's advantage.

I agree, so I say drop her. I don't think Phaed will have an issue with it either. So other than her, the rest of the Avengers list is finished. We just need your and Phaed's opinion on the Initiative group I posted and on Phaed and my second list we thought should be added.

Yep, I don't have an issue with dropping her.

My concern is that many of the Initiative members haven't been in very many books, and the extent of their abilities haven't been accessed.

Keep
3-D Man - (He's just like Cap, with peak physical abilities. I say drop.)
Annex - This One
Bengal (He's just a martial artist...I say drop)
Constrictor - This One
Cloud Girl - (Not enough info...I say drop)
Crusader - This One
Gauntlet - (Not much info..I say drop)
Hardball - (I like this character; but, as a brief bio says, "The full extent of his powers is unrevealed." I say drop, or potential.)
Justice -This One
K.I.A. - (One of the rare ones where some info is given...still not a lot. Potential for me.)
Komodo - (I like her...potential. If you guys like her, I can be convinced to let her in.)
Prodigy (Ritchie Gilmore) - This One
Rage - This One
Slapstick - This One
Sunstreak - (Hardly any info..powerlevels unknown. drop)
Trauma - (Drop, but mainly because being able to show one's fear is about the extent of his power. Not impressed that much, especially since his lack of training makes him easy to eliminate. Bullseye wouldn't even have to be close, and this sucker is dead.)
Ultra Girl - This one.

Potential
Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady)
Debrii - I like this character! I fought for her last season, and she did pretty good in the contest, if I remember right. I think she won a couple matches..but, I could be wrong.
Gorilla Girl
Mutant Zero
Scarlet Spider (MVP)

Drop
Armory
Baron Von Blitzschlag
Diamond Back
Geiger
Melee

Oh, on this:

Potential
Mr. Immortal
Doorman
Squirrel Girl

Isn't doorman the character who was a pain in the butt last contest? It seems like I remember him being. If it's the same one, I say drop him.

Okay... I'll debate some of these Initiative members in my next post... but just to lay it out so far:

Definate Keep
Annex
Constrictor
Crusader
Debrii - I'm okay with bumping her to Keep status.
Justice
Prodigy (Ritchie Gilmore)
Rage
Slapstick
Ultra Girl

Definate Potential
Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady)
Gorilla Girl
Mutant Zero
Scarlet Spider (MVP)

Definate Drop
Armory
Baron Von Blitzschlag
Diamond Back
Geiger
Melee

Squirrel Girl

You know, I think I do remember that. I'm actually not that hot about either of these, but of the team I figured them to have the most potential. I'm okay with moving them all to potential.

Okay... besides the Initiative lot... we need W's vote to break tie on Phobos and Sentry. We're 1 and 1 on both of them.

1 Vote Keep/ 1 Vote Potential
Komodo - (I like her...potential. If you guys like her, I can be convinced to let her in.)
Hardball - (I like this character; but, as a brief bio says, "The full extent of his powers is unrevealed." I say drop, or potential.)
K.I.A. - (One of the rare ones where some info is given...still not a lot. Potential for me.)

All 3 of these are great.

Komodo was the top of her class, is heroic to the Tee, regenerates, has all the reflexes and such of a lizard. She's like The Lizard x10 (and even Curt Conners agrees with this). And she's got a bad attitude, so she doesn't mind fighting dirty here and there. Not to mention the Initiative training really gets you ready for hardcore fighting and war and such.

I'd like to debate K.I.A. more but I think there's enough info out there for W to make a splitting decision whether to add him to the Keep list or keep him in the Potential list. Here's a decent link for his history.

Hardball I really like, but I can see that there can be a lot of questions regarding his powerlevels, so I'll let W decide on that one as well.

1 Vote Keep/ 1 Vote Drop
3D Man
Bengal
Gauntlet
Sunstreak

I'm okay with dropping these completely if W is.

1 Vote Keep/ 1 Vote Drop
Cloud Girl - (Not enough info...I say drop)
Trauma - (Drop, but mainly because being able to show one's fear is about the extent of his power. Not impressed that much, especially since his lack of training makes him easy to eliminate. Bullseye wouldn't even have to be close, and this sucker is dead.)

The main one here I'll debate is Trauma. This guy is better than half the people we've already approved. Not only does he turn into people's fears, but he attacks and takes on the attributes of what he turned into. His size and strength increases (and I dont' recall if he gains powers or not, but he fought like the Juggernaut and others... so it's possible. I'll have to look into it later). He can also be very powerful. Heck, during World War Hulk he took out one of the stronger Warbound on his own... something none of the Avengers were able to do. He's considered one of the most powerful on the team! He can also now use his powers to calm people down, making them not afraid of their fears and such. This can also be creatively used. He's a creative character that, if used properly, can really go far in this tourney. He's also Nightmare's son.

Here's decent bios for Cloud 9. I like her and she's one of the main Initiative characters, but I'll let W decide and break the tie on them. I'll mention also that she's very hardboiled now and is a heck of a sniper that can shoot from the clouds. I think she's worth including in the Keep pile. She's easily among the best new characters from the Initiative.

Go ahead and move Debrii to Potential. I'd sooner keep her in reserve than give up such an important roster spot, when we might like someone else better down the road.

Okay... besides the Initiative lot... we need W's vote to break tie on Phobos and Sentry. We're 1 and 1 on both of them.

I'm fine with both of them. Sentry is a scary powerhouse, but his mind is very vulnerable. And characters like Hulk, who are essentially bricks, have held him to a standoff.

Phobos reminds me of Tag. But with more power since he has Olympian strenght/durability. I'd be fine with him being a potential since info on him seems light.

Komodo sounds good.

Like the bio says, MVP sounds like Captain America Jr. A peak human without super soldier serum. Potential for now, but I won't have a problem if he's bumped up to definite.

Hardball sounds good too. But his information is so brief, I say potential.

The main one here I'll debate is Trauma. This guy is better than half the people we've already approved. Trauma sounds like Tag as well. Maybe even better than Phobos since he becomes what the other fears. Even Juggernaut or Thor. That's a lot of potential. Sounds good to me. As does Cloud 9. Doesn't sound all that powerful, but we let Nick Fury in, so power obviously isn't everything.

Thanks, Wieg!

JH, hopefully you have time today to come up with the finished list, then we can start on the next one tomorrow. I'm going to see the Hawks today, and we got about six inches of snow last night. Luckily, my bro is picking me up in his tow truck and driving my son and me to the ferry terminal. I'm sure going to bundle up, and probably bring a couple blankets.

Everything sounds tip top so far save K.I.A.

W, when you read the bio, MVP is the original guy, who you described. K.I.A. is the 4th clone created from his corpse. He's around 10 feet tall and has the tactigon weapon laced to his arm, which creates any weapon (or energyblast) he can imagine, and a lot of times it'll create whatever weapon that is needed to "get the job done". He's also completely insane.

A lot more potential than just Captain America Jr. :)

Anyhow, I'lll let W. think on K.I.A. and if he thinks he should be on Keep or Potential, and I'll get the rest of the final Avengers list together.

I didn't notice Molecule Man in the FF section. His original incarnation would be a good addition. Inorganic molecules only and of course his mortal body is a weakness.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

I actually don't know much about the character, but I think we got rid of him due to being too uber, but if there's a version that isn't then I'm game for hearing a defense as to why he should be included. But let's wait until we debate Fantastic Four Characters. We're going alphabetically and will be doing Cosmic characters next.

Ahhh. Gotcha. I noticed you didn't use The Defenders as a model. They have a large body of work and might pigeonhole alot of the characters you have spread about.

Just a thought. :D

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Okay... just need W's final word on K.I.A. and this list is completely up to date. And I mixed the Potentials together.

Here's last season's list of Cosmic characters. It can probably use quite a bit of updating with the recent jump in marvel cosmic popularity and stories and such. I definately want to add a bunch of characters but it'll have to be later.

Cosmic
Drax
Firelord
Gamora
Gladiator
Maxam
Moondragon
Terrax
Airwalker
Clea
Adam Warlock
Baron Mordo
Baron Karza
Morg
Mantis
Quasar (Wendall Vaughn)
Quasar (Phyla Vell)

So many of these Cosmics crossover in the FF. :D

Baron Mordo isn't really a Cosmic. More of a Defender. Clea too.

Gotta add Rocket Racoon to this list. :D

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Keep in mind, this Cosmic list is outdated severely. I think the first Annihilation was just starting or in process of being told when we made it. So we'll definately do some work on it. Sadly, I have to go eat and visit my mother so it won't be until tonight at least.

And I'm not against a Defenders section. I've just never read any defenders so I never really thought about it. Plus, they're a little outdated and most of their characters fit better elsewhere.

Really, the only point in separating the characters into sections is to help find them easier. We'll be making draft lists when we're ready and this way it's easier to find certain characters and such. Plus, it's easier to figure out who characters are if they have basic names.

Everything sounds tip top so far save K.I.A.

W, when you read the bio, MVP is the original guy, who you described. K.I.A. is the 4th clone created from his corpse. A lot more potential than just Captain America Jr. :)

Anyhow, I'lll let W. think on K.I.A. and if he thinks he should be on Keep or Potential, and I'll get the rest of the final Avengers list together.

Ok, KIA sounds like a worthy character.

Cool. I added K.I.A. to the above list and we are completely up to date. I'll add numbers later when I have more time. Cosmic is ready to be debated.

I added numbers to the list so we can keep track of how many characters we have. Good thing too. Already noticed a mistake on my part. I had Hawkeye AND Ronin (Clint Barton). Now it's just Ronin (Clint Barton).

Okay... I just spent the pat few hours and updated my opinions on the Cosmic list. This includes everyone I can think of who have been major players or should at least be considered. And as before, bolded names are newbies to this part of the list.

Keep

Air-Walker
Annihilus
Blastaar
Bug
Captain Marvel (Genis)
Captain Universe (Gabriel Varga) - (Gabriel's the most recent and was in Annihilation: Conquest, so I chose him as the welder for the tournament)
Cosmo
Darkhawk - (He's currently becoming a cosmic character, so it may be good to put him here)
Drax
Firelord
Gamora
Gladiator
Groot
Harvest
Mantis
Maxam
Moondragon - I like the original version or the dragon she turned into in Annihilation: Conquest. Either version is fine by me.
Nova
Paibok The Power Skrull
Praxagora
Quasar (Wendall Vaughn)
Quasar (Phyla Vell)
Rocket Racoon
Ronan The Accuser
Stardust - Maybe too uber?
Star Lord
Super Skrull
Ultron
Warlock - Note this isn't "Adam Warlock". We can add (Phalanx) if needed.
Wraith (Zak-Del)

Potential
Adam Warlock - His powerset is a bit everywhere since his awakening during Annihilation Conquest. It's hard to tell exactly how powerful he is or what he can do.
Baron Karza - He does nothing for me, but if anyone wants to keep him I wouldn't mind.
Fallen One - Interesting character but I'm not sure if there's much info out there.
Her - She's on the previous list but I don't know much about her and it's difficult to find a bio for such a generic term.
Super Adaptoid - Does he have a set powerset? If so then I say keep him, if not then drop him.
Terrax - Unsure on this one. I like him but he may be too uber. I can be persuaded either way.
Xemnu - Too uber?

Drop
Nobody as of yet

Needs Moved
Clea (Other)
Baron Mordo (Other)

Okay, so I updated the previous ongoing list, moving everyone I listed above to the "Cosmic" section from previous sections they were in before.

I also think it may be a good idea to go ahead and move all the StarJammers and core Shi'ar people here as well, being that they ARE Cosmic characters and will be playing a large role in the upcoming War of Kings storyline. I'm thinking this includes the Starjammers, Vulcan, Deathbird, and the Shi'ar Royal Guard. My opinions of them below. I'll provide links for the Shi'ar royal guard I think should stay or at least be considered. I'm pretty flexable on them though.

Keep
Astra
Chod
Deathbird
Earthquake
Havoc
Korvus
Marvel Girl
Neutron
Oracle
Plutonia
Polaris
Raza
Titan - What appeals to me here is that he's a growing guy... but one that can fly as well! And he's warrior trained.
Vulcan
Warstar
Zenith

Potential
G-Type
Hepzibah
Hobgoblin (Shi'ar)
Smasher

Drop
Corsair
Lilandra
The rest of the Shi'ar Royal Guard
