Longtime lurker, haven't posted before.

The new costume rocks. The trunks debate was going on for so long that it would have been like they weren't moving forward without abandoning them. Now it looks modern, stream-lined, and badass. Bravo.

Regarding Superman Returns, I loved the film initially but, as most here have noted, it suffers upon repeated viewings. The movie is sloooowww. However, I do think it was the right movie for that period in Superman's history. The character (on many levels, apparently) wasn't ready to move on yet, so we got the next-best thing: an homage. But I'm glad they're ditching its costume and going for the complete reverse (especially the more natural hair -- it looks way better).

By the way, this thread is endlessly entertaining thanks to Kurosawa's fundamentalistic take on the mythos. And I mean that in the best possible way. Love the passion.

Welcome!

Superman Returns provides a nice closure to Donnerverse, it could have been a lot better but still this is a new start for Superman and it will be like introducing Superman to whole new generation, I remain hopeful that it will be a success.

I thought IM2 lacked a lot, but it had a lot to live up to considering how good the first was.
Captain America was a great comic book movie. Faithful to the character and his origins.
I enjoyed the first two Spiderman movies, but the third took a lot of stamina to watch. I still don't own it on DVD/Blu-Ray

Captain America was a war movie. If they wanted to make a superhero movie, then Rogers needed to display a whole lot more athleticism. It was nothing more than a war movie with a guy who could jump far and run fast.

As far as Maguire in SM, it was a complete and total failure. If you want to talk about being faithful to source material, then you:
1. Can't hire a mush-mouthed, wooden-faced, monotone actor to portray a character known for spouting snarky remarks and funny quips during fight scenes.

2. Fail to write more than 4 "snarky" quips for the character to say in the whole trilogy.

I'm no HUGE fan of Spider-man, but any purist, or even a big fan should be dissapointed with the WHOLE trilogy, just based on the casting and Maguire's performance...

Seems to me that "purist" is a very relative term. I enjoyed the Spider-Man series for the most part, and I thought Spider-Man 2 was probably one of the top 5 superhero movies ever. I thought Maguire was an excellent Peter Parker/Spidey, and I'd venture most fans of the character would agree.

Too often, a person's view of what's a "pure interpretation" not-so-secretly translates into what that person prefers.

Very true.

And I also think Spider-man 2 is an excellent superhero film. That script is so extremely well written regardless of how accurate it is or isn't from the comics.

Wait. Wait wait wait wait wait. Wait.

Your favorite show is MASH? The same MASH that starred Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce? That MASH, right? Because if so, then you might just be the biggest hypocrite on the Internet. You constantly talk about how the original creator's intent should be followed to the letter, and yet you cite MASH as your favorite show of all time. Okay, let's look at that.

Richard Hornberger, writer of the book which MASH is based on, who himself was the inspiration for the character of Hawkeye Pierce, is a staunchly conservative Republican. That's how he was written in the book. Yet in the show he was...well, Alan Alda. The producers of the MASH TV series basically changed everything that Hornberger wrote of Hawkeye in order to create the show. Doesn't that bother you? No? Well, let's go further.

Spearchucker was cut from the show. Henry Blake gets killed. Hot Lips becomes much more mellow. And the tone of the show becomes much more melancholy and serious, focusing on anti-war themes. Again, the book's writer was not anti-war. Exactly the opposite, in fact. That should bother you, shouldn't it? I mean, the creator of the book's wishes weren't followed!

And you complain about removing some underpants. Your favorite show of all time completely changed everything its original writer wanted from it. And yet, for all that, the show still became one of the greatest, most beloved shows of all time. So we can learn two lessons from it. One: change is not bad. Change should be tried. Change can turn out great. Two: sometimes the orignal creator can be wrong. Or, if not wrong, can have a great idea that can be improved upon by others. Improvements like, say, changing the character of Hawkeye to make him more compelling, or removing parts of a modern costume that have become anachronistic over time.
Quoted solely because this is one of the more hilarious burns I've seen in a while. :funny:

Getting back to Superman, one of the elements I like most about the new suit is that it looks like it gets a bit weathered after he's gotten the snot beat out of him by Zod (or whatever happens in the new film). The blue looks a bit gritty in some shots. Love it. And in those faraway shots when he's walking down the street -- the costume looks phenomenal. The little changes they made (and the one big one) really help you see the suit like you're looking at it for the first time. I think casual audiences will be impressed.

double post... 20 minutes later

No problem with Leno's remarks, he's a comedian, it's his job to try and be funny.
I had a problem with Cavill's remark tho.

Agreed. Whether he meant to or not, I feel like Cavill was being disrespectful to the character and the people who are fans of the classic look.

He was just playing along with Jay. It's most likely his first time on the show, he's not gonna put him in his place. And he also poked a bit of fun at the new design with the "bit more revealing" crack.

Point for you, h.s.

But... but... you had predicted that people around the world were going to rididule the NEW suit because it had no trunks...

what went wrong?
:csad:

but but dont you see fan boy comic book cosplayers ridiculed it:oldrazz: while they dressed up in homemade super hero outfits LOL

If it was supposed to be "war" film it sure did miss out on a lot of opportunities. Your observation is interesting though. It goes adds to why I got nothing from that film in even more aspects.

everything meh

LOL, the Tonight Show audience cheered at the new suit. So much for the GA rejecting it 'cuz it has no trunks.

Just for fun :yay:
My bad, I've uploaded the wrong picture saying even him can be rebooted.

i may be wrong but shouldnt it be "even he can be rebooted"

I love the new suit and symbol myself, not that I don't love the orignal Donner concept, but honestly, I gotta admit to being in agreement at Snyder's version.
