The Official Detective Comics Thread

I agree fully with The Joker on this one. It could have been a really great issue if it had been fully dedicated to The Riddler. It spent too much time with the Countdown tie-in and pushing that storyline down peoples throats. Countdown is all right, but Detective Comics is way better. And we all understand that Dini writes BOTH but, come on...this is why most comic fans get tired of this stupid big event BS. It ruins good comics. :cmad:

But that aside...some people have way too high standards. The issue wasn't THAT bad, sheesh. Just too much, "OMG, read Countdown!"

It goes something like this:
While running his legit casino place, called the Iceburg Lounge, Mr. Zzzz cheats him out of a lot of cash with the help of a kidnapped magician and another mob boss character. It happens during a poker game, and he couldn't prove he was cheating so he walked away with a lot of his money. He gets it back in the end, though.

I didn't get this part. Because in poker, you play against other players and the house usually takes a small cut of each hand played. So the Penguin wouldn't have lost any money unless he has 'house players' who play at the tables for the Iceburg Lounge that were getting cheated. But that's unlikely. And if it were so, he could get up at anytime and leave the table if he suspected Zzzz was cheating. Unless they were playing in a tournament.

Dini should have written it as a Blackjack game. Just my little nitpick about poker being portrayed really poorly in media (either players making illogical calls, rules portrayed incorrectly, or just having poker games to cash in on the craze).

Batman and Zatanna struggle against the combined threat of Scarface and the new Ventriloquist as the villains attempt to take out an entire Gotham crime family. Plus, more on the origin of the Ventriloquist!
On sale May 7 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

I'm excited to see what the deal is with this new Ventriloquist. After a year I still have no idea who she could be, but I'm looking forward to Dini's explanation.

I'm not sure, but I remember in her first appearance either Scarface or her mentioned that she had been dead once before (or something like that, probably metaphorically) and Batman noted that something about her seemed familiar. I'm guessing maybe an old, obscure character, if anyone.

I thought the new Venquilotrist was that blonde chick? Dini wrote her in that Harley issue. Did something happen to her?

Sick of Zatanna. I never liked her and I don't know why she's crowding one of the best comics on the rack. She looks stupid with that hat.

Zatanna is Dini's favorite DC character...they mention it a few times on the Batman: TAS commentary.

finally got around to reading the Mad Hatter issue, man I love Paul dini's work. He's today's best Batman writer.

Good read, fun, didn't lag. This is how Batman should be too, the writing in that series has been meh.

Detective's the Best Batman comic out there.

I read BATMAN and it's like well this is kinda' weak or crappy, but Detective is about as good as when I started steadily reading Batman comics in the early 90's. As good as the older stuff from the 70's and 80's too.

It's nice to see a Bat book with quality.

okay that's kinda weird. what the hell's so good about Zatanna?

The fishnets. (But Canary wears them better).

I think I read someplace that Dini was married to a magician, too. That might help explain some of his interest in the character.

The fishnets. (But Canary wears them better)..

Yah exactly :cwink:. Magic and women in top hats are not cool, especially not together. Interesting about Dini's wife. I just never thought that was much 'character' to Zatanna though, she just shows up when something supernatual needs be done and oterwise she's just kinda bland.

Thought everybody would like to know that Hush will be returning in Detective Comics.

i hope Dini never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever

QUITS OR STOPS WRITING THE DETECTIVE LINE!

Did anyone else enjoy the first part of the latest Ventriloquist story in Detective?

Dini sure does love using Zatanna :o

It was okay, something about the Venquilotrist just pisses me off. Zatanna made for some cool scenes with Batman but I hope she leaves this book soon as well.

I just realised I'm really looking forward to the Hush story.

maybe i should see a docotor

A "Batman: R.I.P." issue — and part 1 of the 5-part story "The Return of Hush!"

Readers who were surprised by Catwoman's return last month haven't see anything yet as Hush makes a dramatic return to the life of Batman. What will this mean for Bruce Wayne? This epic story kicks off the countdown to DETECTIVE #850!

Nope, you're perfectly fine. Finally...Hush written by someone with talent. :o

The only thing that has me worried about it is that it's a Batman RIP tie in. I was hoping that the only book that stupid crap would effect was Batman, but I guess not. Damn it.

I was hoping Hush would return by making some sort of move on Gotham, but Batman clamps the **** down on him, schools him outright, makes some quip about him being a horribly conceived character, and threatens to dismantle his life if he didn't let the dumb vendetta go. During the beatdown Batman would be like, "You killed Harold. I *liked* Harold. "

Hush is like Bane-lite, and Bane is like Ra's-superlite.

so i'm trying to catch up on Dini's Detective run. I stopped buying after 834 for some unknown reason. Apparently i've missed 10 or so issues. What i want to know is which issues Dini DID NOT write, and whether or not the ones he didn't write are worth getting. Also, back when i was picking up the series initially, i skipped out on 829, 830, and 832 because Dini didn't write them. I wanna grab them for completeness sake. Are they any good?

Don't get the Ressurection of Ra's Al Ghul tie ins. Everything other than that is worth having.
