I was gonna wait on this until after Christmas, but I'm jealous so I'm gonna buy it today.
Do you have to do anything special to own a house, or do you just find one with no owners and squat?
I am using the first house you see when you warp to the minefields, I've dropped off some supplies and told Dogmeat (I accidently found him pretty early) to stay inside.
I'm a few hours in and have only done Chapter One of that woman's survival book, and that's about it. I've been exploring and trying to level up a little.

I've played for about 3 hours now. I'm working on the Wasteland Survival Guide right now. The way I play open-world RPGs, I'll probably do every single side quest I can find before continuing with the main quest, but if the gameplay so far is any indication, it'll all be quite enjoyable.
For those who've played it before, any tips on earning a lot of money quickly? I always hate the beginning stages of RPGs, where your skills suck and you can never buy anything.
Here's a tip to those who just started; Hang on to any scrap metal, pre-war books, blood packs, and sugar bombs breakfast cereal you run across.
You can sell them to certain people in the game for a very nice profit. And you can also recieve a special perk that lets you use the blood packs to regain health.

Where do you find followers? The only potential follower I've found so far is Jericho in Megaton, and he won't follow me because I'm not an evil son of a b****. I'd really love to get a follower, since more than 2 enemies become a giant hassle unless I happen to be at really close range and can VATS their heads open with my shotgun. My guy's kind of well-rounded between a few useful "smart" skills like lockpicking, repair, and medicine and a decent amount of points in small guns and energy weapons.I don't know if all the followers are like this or not, but Cheron is a freakin BEAST since gaining his contract, combat has been a lot less difficult. The guy takes an ungodly amount of punishment and is VERY accurate with that shotgun. He offsets my weaknesses very nicely since I developed my character to be more intelegent and skillfull rather than combat savy. So far Charon and I had two epic battles one in Paridise falls and the other where the Talon Company holds base at.

Small Guns is incredibly useful. I'm kicking ass with a somewhat kamikaze combat style, charging people and then taking them down with a couple of close-quarters shotgun blasts to the face. It's a good feeling when you can make Super Mutants run away from you.
I still haven't found any followers, so I consulted an online guide. Where's the Scrapyard? I want to get my faithful canine companion, at least.

How do you activate Power of the Atom sidequest?
I'm still gonna go to the GNR Plaza to talk to him out of curiosity, though. You walk into Megaton and talk to Lucas Simms. You can bring it up by talking to him about the bomb.
I've mostly been doing side quests too, but that accidentally made me skip part of the main quest. I got to Megaton and the next part of the main quest was supposed to be that I go to the GNR Plaza and talk to Three Dog, but instead I went to Rivet City to look for clues about the android for The Replicated Man and wound up talking to Dr. Li, who is apparently the person you're supposed to talk to after Three Dog. The Following in his Footsteps quest got marked complete and I apparently missed all the Three Dog stuff.I'm still gonna go to the GNR Plaza to talk to him out of curiosity, though.
