I was gonna wait on this until after Christmas, but I'm jealous so I'm gonna buy it today.

I've just been doing the survival guide missions since I started. Definitely a fun and involved game.

I bought it before lunch. I'll download it when I go home and be playing before the day is through. Yay for holiday bonuses.

Do you have to do anything special to own a house, or do you just find one with no owners and squat?

I am using the first house you see when you warp to the minefields, I've dropped off some supplies and told Dogmeat (I accidently found him pretty early) to stay inside.

I'm a few hours in and have only done Chapter One of that woman's survival book, and that's about it. I've been exploring and trying to level up a little.

You can squat, or you can get your own house by completing "The Power of the Atom" quest. How you complete that quest will decide which house you get. You can also buy decorative themes for your home and useful extras such as a medical station and laboratory and others.

I've played for about 3 hours now. I'm working on the Wasteland Survival Guide right now. The way I play open-world RPGs, I'll probably do every single side quest I can find before continuing with the main quest, but if the gameplay so far is any indication, it'll all be quite enjoyable. :)

For those who've played it before, any tips on earning a lot of money quickly? I always hate the beginning stages of RPGs, where your skills suck and you can never buy anything.

I did a couple missions now I am going to concentrate on side quests

I'll just quote you what I posted on the last page.

Here's a tip to those who just started; Hang on to any scrap metal, pre-war books, blood packs, and sugar bombs breakfast cereal you run across.

You can sell them to certain people in the game for a very nice profit. And you can also recieve a special perk that lets you use the blood packs to regain health.

On a related note, I love the rough beginning in most RPGs.

Scrap metal can be sold for a nice profit.....Metal would be a commodity in that type of environment

Just started playing this last night. So far it is amazing.

I don't know if all the followers are like this or not, but Cheron is a freakin BEAST since gaining his contract, combat has been a lot less difficult. The guy takes an ungodly amount of punishment and is VERY accurate with that shotgun. He offsets my weaknesses very nicely since I developed my character to be more intelegent and skillfull rather than combat savy. So far Charon and I had two epic battles one in Paridise falls and the other where the Talon Company holds base at.

Where do you find followers? The only potential follower I've found so far is Jericho in Megaton, and he won't follow me because I'm not an evil son of a b****. I'd really love to get a follower, since more than 2 enemies become a giant hassle unless I happen to be at really close range and can VATS their heads open with my shotgun. My guy's kind of well-rounded between a few useful "smart" skills like lockpicking, repair, and medicine and a decent amount of points in small guns and energy weapons.

I know in Paradise Falls you can buy Clover, one of Eulogy's personal slaves. She has served me pretty well, so far.

Any in Rivet City? That's where I'm headed right now to follow up on that android mission.

Well, I'm done with the manual!
Man, what an amazing list of skills and perks.
I can't wait to start the game.
I want to turn into an empty-hand badass with an expertise on small guns

Small Guns is incredibly useful. I'm kicking ass with a somewhat kamikaze combat style, charging people and then taking them down with a couple of close-quarters shotgun blasts to the face. It's a good feeling when you can make Super Mutants run away from you. :)

I still haven't found any followers, so I consulted an online guide. Where's the Scrapyard? I want to get my faithful canine companion, at least.

Here is a list of followers. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_followers

I haven't used Dogmeat, I leave him in my apartment, I'm too worried that he's going to die, lol.

I just blew up Megaton. Prior to doing so I murdered everyone inside and stole everything I could.

Yeah, I found that Wiki site and I've been reading through it. I probably shouldn't, but I can't help myself.

Has anyone beaten the game yet? If so, is it possible to ignore the main quest at any point, or after a certain point, do you basically get herded toward completing the main quest regardless of what else is going on? I want to go to Vault 87 to get Fawkes, but I know that's a big part of the main quest. Would I be able to progress along the main quest to that point, then ignore the main quest and go back to doing side missions?

Woot, just collected Lincoln's Rifle and the Terrible Shotgun. :cwink:

I did a few quests, found Big Town, and roaming around the country side

I've been playing for hours and the only 2 quests I've actually completed are the Survival Guide and The Power of the Atom. I keep getting distracted and going out to level up or explore.

How do you activate Power of the Atom sidequest?

To disarm it, you just have to have high enough skill and go to the bomb and examine it.

To blow it up, There's a guy sitting in a room in Moriarty's saloon. He asks you to rig the bomb.

You walk into Megaton and talk to Lucas Simms. You can bring it up by talking to him about the bomb.

I've mostly been doing side quests too, but that accidentally made me skip part of the main quest. I got to Megaton and the next part of the main quest was supposed to be that I go to the GNR Plaza and talk to Three Dog, but instead I went to Rivet City to look for clues about the android for The Replicated Man and wound up talking to Dr. Li, who is apparently the person you're supposed to talk to after Three Dog. The Following in his Footsteps quest got marked complete and I apparently missed all the Three Dog stuff. :o I'm still gonna go to the GNR Plaza to talk to him out of curiosity, though.

That happened to me too. I talked to Dr. Li while trying to do the Survival Guide. I am planning to trek to the GNR soon and see what happens.
