Im really confused about this game. They say its an RPG and thats how its classified but everything I see of it screams FPS. What is it, a shooter with RPG elements? An RPG that plays like a shooter? Does it not really fit quite into either category?

I'm assuming it's a FPS/RPG hybrid like Dues Ex, SS2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R although wikipedia is defines it as an "Action role-playing game"

"An action role-playing game or action RPG is a common name for a type of computer or video game which is closely linked to the console role-playing game genre. Although the precise definition of the genre varies, the typical action RPG features a heavy emphasis on combat, often simplifying or removing non-combat attributes often associated with more traditional role-playing games, such as statistics and the effect they have on the character's development[1] Additionally, combat always takes place using a real-time system (hence the "action") that relies on the player's ability to perform particular actions with speed and accuracy to determine success, rather than mainly using the player character's attributes to determine this. However, RPGs that use this style of combat system give equal focus to non-combat elements such as non-player character interaction and character development (such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) are often referred to as computer role-playing games.
Although certainly not the first, Diablo and its sequels helped revitalize the action RPG genre. Other examples include Crystalis, the Mana series, Kingdom Hearts, Mass Effect, and Dungeon Siege."

Its like Oblivion. You can switch from the First Person perspective to the Third Person perspective. Altho this time around, playing in the Third Person wont suck.

I loved me some Oblivion, so really thats the main draw that this will have for me. The guns and shooting threw me off though, bc its not typically what I expect from an RPG. Im used to swords and spells

Yea, I'm with you. I just found out about this game a few months ago. I then discovered it was made by Bethesda and i was pretty much sold. I find the setting to be really unique, at least for me. One thing that i loved about Oblivion was the ability to play in the 3rd person mode but it never felt very fluid. The guys at Bethesda did some research and found out that a large number of ppl playing Oblivion would use the 3rd person view so they made sure to really nail the 3rd person perspective for this game. I'm all kinds of stoked for this game and hopefully i can come up with the cash to grab a copy.

crap, missed this thread.

IGN gave it a 9.6, though im hearing mixed reviews from other gamers. I think ill rent it first to be sure.

I was able to come up with the money to pick this up. Im not very far at all, i just exited the Vault, but good lord the scene was breathtaking. I mean the waste land looked just amazing. Overall the game looks amazing.

The V.A.T.S. system is prolly the coolest thing ever. :o

I blew a guy's head off, and shot another's leg off. F**kIng SeXy.

It's basically Oblivion in an entirely different setting. LoVeIt.
I was expecting a fast paced game though, so it took some time to adjust, but it's amazing. Played for about 4 hours just doing little side quests and exploring, already have a pad in the first little city you stumble across.

That's what the "basically" bit is for. :o
I've barely scratched the surface of the game, I can't wait to actually get to D.C. but I'm gonna spend more time around the wastelands.

It's pretty awesome. There seems to be a lot of depth to it as well. I just entered some town. Forgot the name, lookin for my dad. Cant wait to see what happens next. I hope to hook up with some chicks during this game. Ive always found that fun.

I hope it's abit more than that.

It is. On a podcast I heard Fallout 3 accurately described as, "Oblivion for people that hated Oblivion." I fall into that category and I'm loving FO3 so far. It does feel like TESIV at times, it runs on the same engine after all, but it's better in almost every way that I can see.

Perhaps the three most important improvements are skills, level scaling, and dialogue. Your skills matter a hell of a lot more in this game. The level scaling is done in a much more sensible fashion, and the dialogue is vastly improved over Oblivion's.

I can only hope Bethesda will implement a lot of what they've done with Fallout 3 into The Elder Scrolls V.

Guess it's worth a pre-order, not released here yet unfortionately.

Oblivion and (Morrowind before it) were both solid RPGs but the random encounters were their biggest flaws. They didn't scale well when you were high level and the random encounters were sometimes crazy (ie those bird things in Morrowind appearing every 5 minutes outta nowhere or the uber equipped bandits from Oblivion). I hope Fallout 3 fixed this problem.

Are they still making The Elder Scrolls V into a MMORPG format?

Well, "The Elder Scrolls Online" is just a rumor so far, but definately a likely one. However Bethesda wouldn't be working on it directly, though. Their parent company, Zenimax, formed a completely different studio to work on MMOs. Some of Bethesda's guys moved over there after it was formed and that's how the rumor started.

For now there is no reason to assume that TESV and TESO will be the same game. If I had to take a completely blind stab in the dark I would guess that TESV might somehow lead into or set up the supposed MMO.

[EDIT]

Also, I just read on Kotaku that Bethesda is eyeing 2010 for their next Elder Scrolls game.

I can't comment on Fable II as I haven't played it yet, but I'm sure it's really good. Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2, however I can tell you that both are phenomenal. It just depends if you would prefer an RPG or an open-world shooter.

Either way, you can't go wrong.

I own both Fable 2 and Fallout 3 and iv played through Fable 2 and it was fantastic. So far, from what iv seen with Fallout, its fantastic as well. I'm hearing good things for Far Cry as well but i haven't played it yet. Like Pandamar said, what do you feel like playing? If you are looking for a more light hearted game that has tons of playability, go with Fable. If you are looking for a more dark disturbing game go with Fallout. If you are wanting a shooter, go with Far Cry.

Like Pandamar said, you really cant go wrong with any choice. Fable is a great adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously which can make for some great moments. Fallout is slightly more hardcore and its a blast so far.

I prefer the world of Fable, the world of Albion slightly more than i do the world of Fallout. I just find the Dickens-esque theme to be charming and fun, however its DAMN hard not to love the post-apocolyptic DC that the Fallout world is set in.

I rented Fable 2 and it's the kind of game that might be fun the first time around but I don't see it having much replay value. I haven't tried Far Cry 2 yet.

I completely disagree. In terms of replay value, id put it ahead of Fallout due to the fact that once you beat Fallout, thats it, you cant keep exploring. Thats not the case with Fable 2. Once you beat Fable 2, there are other quests to do as well as playing the enconomy in hopes to get the label of "king".

Well there you have it, XMaNiAx, you'll have to rent 'em both and decide for yourself.
