The OFFICIAL FINAL CRISIS THREAD

Now that things are actually happening in Countdown, it's a bit more enjoyable when I flip through it and then regret buying it.

Some parts of Countdown have recovered, others have largely stayed as bad as they've always been.

Piper/Trickster story has gotten good. Ray Palmer story has gotten readable. I actually like Jason Todd now which is the strangest thing. Jimmy has stopped being an idiot as well, though his story is still moving at a snail's pace. For anyone who hasn't been tuning in, rest assured: "He has something to do with the New Gods" is still the extent of what we know about the mystery.

Bob the Monitor [blackout]being a traitor[/blackout] would have been more interesting if [blackout]he actually had anything like a personality before then for anyone to be invested in. Instead, it just happens and there it's done. And we're just like, okay then, moving on.[/blackout] Monarch gathering an army of the multiverse has been ridiculous in other titles, but it's actually been tolerable in Countdown itself.

Mary Marvel being an idiot has been horrible all the way through, but at least that's ostensibly over now that she's given up her powers. Now she's crossing over to the Shamazons storyline, which...well, actually, that's even worse if at all possible.

The Mary Marvel and Jimmy Olsen stories are the ones that have failed to becoming interesting. Jimmy Olsen story is like a mystery without any questions and Mary Marvel's is just downright useless.

Piper/Trickster and Ray Plamer stories are still the best and have had pretty good payoffs. I can't invest myself in the Monarch story at all - I'm not convinced by any of his reasons for going to war or even why he cares - not forgetting that it's still meant to be Captain Atom in there.

It's sad when you see a series, like OMD as well, that you just know that most of the events have been editorial in nature.

That's the weird thing about Countdown-- everyone seems to have different bits they care about. I basically only cared for the Mary Marvel story, and was semi-interested in the Superman-prime bits and the Hunt for Ray Palmer, but only because the last two let me see all the different DC worlds. I wish we had seen more Darkseid but I don't think he is actually doing anything. So I would hate for him to just all of a sudden be the big villain of Final Crisis. Though Grant is a master at setting stuff up and knocking it down. No single story was that great in my mind. But I'm at least happy with the Mary Marvel story now

They still haven't addressed his evilness in Countdown proper either, huh? I thought Arena would definitely do it, at long last. But no. Just a bunch of people brawling and then Captain Dickwad lol'ing at how he knew everything they were going to do and could never beat him... and then they really didn't beat him at the end. They got a pyrrhic victory at best, a ginormous body count, and no developments on why the Monarch is doing anything he's doing.

Piper/Trickster story has gotten good.
Heartily agreed. I was actually saddened and stunned for a moment when [blackout]Trickster went down. That whole bit where he actually cared about Piper and saved him from taking a bullet, it was a surprisingly poignant moment in a series that just hasn't been long on emotion.[/blackout]

As someone else already said, that guy just can't catch a ****in' break.

It is, isn't it? [blackout]That's right, Bob, take a ****in' knife in the back of the neck![/blackout] It's a bummer that Jason comes off as an alright guy in exchange for Kyle being an irritating jock, but you can't have it all, I guess.

What is he now, a living Mother Box?

I don't know, it surprised me.

Still waiting for the pre-COIE Monitor to *****-slap all of them.

Maybe they'll just kill her. That would be cool.

Jimmy's story is like a mystery without a detective, is what it is. And yes, Mary's story is the one that seems the most tangential.

He thinks the Monitors suck at their jobs, and he wants just one universe. So basically, he's Alexander Luthor. Now there's a thought--maybe he's Alexander Luthor, come back to life!

Sad, too, when everyone blames the writer. Yes, Dini is technically putting it on paper, but he couldn't do much more with what he was ordered to do. He needs money like anybody else.

Except I haven't seen one person say anything negative about Dini.

I don't think I've seen it here, no, that's not what I meant. "Everyone" was a total overstatement, and I take that back. But I have seen and heard it other places.

Leaguer hates Dini's Detective Comics because it's not Morrison's Batman.

Oh. Maybe people are too busy saying negative things about everyone else involved with Countdown.

Dini's run on Detective prior to Countdown ranged from "whatever" to "people seriously like this?" for me, so seeing him screw Countdown up was never surprising.

I felt the same about Morrison's run on Batman.

And we're well on our way to having derailed THREE Official so-and-so Threads.

That's what they get for being pompous enough to declare themselves "the official" anything. :o

Wait, no, it's four. This one, the GL one, the Flash one, and the JLA one.

I'm not reading any interviews or anything, because I want to avoid spoilers...but with how Countdown finally got better, and certain concepts have been brought in I'm curious about...surprisingly enough I'm looking forward to Final Crisis to see how it goes.
