The Official Flash Thread - Part 2

With these studio-driven projects featuring untested properties, they seem to be treading carefully.

I can understand their reasoning though, but IMO Fassbender would have been an amazing Hal Jordan. He's got a great acting range.... but I'm sure he lost out due to him being too unknown compared to a recognizable, safe and marketable name like Reynolds.

Btw remember that Jim Lee and Geoff Johns will be at Saturday's LA Times Hero Complex Film Fest and will be delievering some news.

Walter Hill still makes films that get theatrical releases? :cwink:
He's gonna do a new action film, with Sylvester Stallone in the lead, Joel Silver producing. So don't try to count out this guy, not yet.

And the John Landis case. It's been 28 years since that accident. Don't you think he's a more experienced film maker now? The deaths of the actors are sad, but you can't have it haunt the director forever.

People die on set sometimes, so even at the Bond films. But they didn't stop making them, did they?

And by the way, a director is not the only person on the team. There are lots of people, and some of them are taking care of the security.

Now, the question is if John Landis' filmatic style can work for The Flash, after such films as Animal House, Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places, Into The Night, Spies Like Us, Three Amigos, Coming To America and Michael Jackson's music video Thriller. Comedies, action sequences and horror.

Deaths aside, Landis hasn't done a good film in two decades. I dont have a clue why this is being ignore.

Listen I love his past work but he's just like John Carpenter: Did not make a good transition into the 90's for some reason. So no, being older didn't help Landis or Carpenter.

I rather say he hasn't got a commercial success in two decades. But as soon as he get his hand on a script that makes money, the studios will open their doors for him again.
It's not like he was talented, then lost his talent?

Do John Landis deserve to just stay in the shadows, or is it loss of potential?
Walter Hill is trying something new with Sly. Joe Dante made The Hole.
This old guys still have something to give, I think. They doesn't belong in the past, like dinosaurs.
Who say they can't be something to count on in the new decade? Wouldn't it be nice if they get a couple of new hits?

Maybe Steven Spielberg should make Jurassic Park 4 - a theme park, not with blood-thirsty killer animals but with 1980s directors trying to make a name again? ;)

I like those guys too but let's be realistic. If landis had a string of acclaimed indie hits recently, I would reconsider it.

But for two decades he hasn't made anything worth while. Walter Hill is making a bigger film again yes, but it's not based on a multi-million dollar property.

Spielberg, The Coen Bros, Michael Mann, Martin Scorese, Ridley Scott, amongst others, have made much smoother transitions into 90s and now than Carpetner and Landis. Why? I don't know. But I wouldnt trust Landis NOW to film a Flash film. If it was a young 80's Landis, for sure.

I don't think John Carpenter's lost anything, but I don't want him to do The Flash. John Carpenter for The Spectre.

And don't think all of a sudden, Landis can make a quality Flash film now, out of no where, even though he's been out of comission for the past 20 years. Even his latest film with Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis didn't make any splash even in the indie scene.

Keep on mind that I love landis. But he is like Rob Reiner where he just lost some of his magic along the way.

I think he lost some momentum by the mid 90's but he is still the man.

I thought In The Mouth of Madness was, Halloween and The Thing aside, just as good as the rest of his work. I liked Village of the Damned as well. I've never gotten a chance to watch Escape from LA or Vampires yet. I grew up watching his movies (even though most of them are older than me.) so I'll always have an attachment to his movies I suppose.

I loved In The Mouth of Madness. It's one of the better horror films I've seen.

Octoberist: If you really like his early work... didn't it ever cross your mind that this guy should do a comic book movie someday? That he had the right personal style that would come to shine in this kind of film.
But the thing is, during his days of fame, there weren't exactly that many heroes possible to make. We had Superman yes, but all the others were/had recently been cheap television series back then (Spidey, Hulk, WW, Bats).
It's the last decade this genre became really big. That's the problem that stands in his way. But perhaps a superhero is just what Landis need to succeed again.

What if he manages to get a few indie hits (as you put it) in the coming years, would you then trust him with another hero? I don't know in which order the films will be made, only that Flash will be next big screen debut. Perhaps if Green Arrow comes out after 2015? But that discussion belongs to another thread.

Off-topic, No Carpenter for Flash, he should be heading for Hawkman.

I'm a bit of a realist and I think that Landis' best days are behind him, superhero film or not. It happens to the best sometimes. It doesn't mean I can't still be a fan of his work.

You didn't answer my questions for you. DID you during his days think he should do a superhero adaption?

Someone in the film industry can ALWAYS come back. Your statement above is now written in stone - forever and ever. It shows your trust in the directors you claim to like. End of story. Period. No need to discuss this any further.

My other suggestion is Baz Lurhmann.

Back in the day, I think could..sure.

And yes, never say never in the industry but that also apply to M. Night. (He's a much more if an extreme case however because Landis is leagues better than M. Night.)

I think when when talking about a director's career it's hard to gauge the track record. You and I are not wrong because we both have good points.

I also never told you that I interned at a production company and I've met Landis before a number of times. My boss even told me that landis. has huge money issues right now and struggles o find gigs for himself. Once he sorts things out with his personal life, then au can see his career back on track.

I like Baz. I also like the suggestion of Rian Johnson.

BTW, that LA Times Hero Complex Film Fest panel with Jim Lee and Geoff Johns was about nothing DC film related; just the DC Comics reboot.

It makes me think we will have to wait till Comic Con for any real news. OR maybe after Green Lantern.

Octoberist: There's something about Baz Lurhmann and the color red that has glued to my mind ;)
Baz doing Flash would be nice, as long as he gets free hands on the visual style. With Mirror Master as the villian, we can have a strange surreal setting as crazy as Moulin Rouge :D

And not to forget, mostly Australian actors in the cast. But that rule out my favorite Devon Sawa, because he Canadian.

Seriously, what is up with wanting all these old school 80s directors to do the Flash?

so since green Lantern will have debuted long before comic con has arrived do you think that we will hear anything about this then?

If Real Steel is anything as good as it looks, then I would love for Shawn Levy to direct.

^ Shawn Levy was set to direct it in the Ryan Reynolds' days.

Oh Please, no Shawn Levy. That would be Tim Story all over again :(

I don't want one of our dream films to be DESTROYED. Do you?

^ That's not really fair. Shawn Levy is a superior director than Tim Story.

And Real Steel looks awesome.

No to Shawn levy; he's safe and generic. Though I did like A Night at the Museum, it's not a great movie. We can do better.

Thanks, Octoberist. You are my man now!

The Flash needs a better director.
