The Official Green Lantern Rumors/Speculation Thread - Part 1

Well if Tom Cruise signing on as Hal would mean we've averted a film that kills Hal off early on, then I say Yay Tom Cruise.

IF Tom Cruise rumor has any truth to it:

You know there was a time like 15 years ago where I was really into the idea of Tom Cruise playing Tony Stark/Iron Man. And a big reason of that is because Cruise's life in many ways already seemed like Tony Stark. So he seemed tailor made for that character.

I'm glad we got Downey and all. But I guess my issue is that if Cruise were to play Hal, it would've been in that sweet spot 10-12 years ago. He's 56 now. Just seems unrealistic to put him in a new franchise role as the star superhero UNLESS the idea is to have Hal groom John and pass the torch to him. But let's be honest guys, is Cruise going to really want to play Tommy Lee Jones to Will Smith in Men in Black?

IMHO Cruise will not want to play second banana to John Stewart.

Getting a big name like Tom Cruise is at least an interesting way of setting the film apart from the much-maligned Green Lantern film with Reynolds. They go from "agh, another Green Lantern movie?" to "Tom Cruise as the Green Lantern?", which from a marketing stand point could be a good thing.

To be fair, Tommy Lee Jones didn't really feel less important than Will Smith in the Men in Black series. Didn't seem like K was playing second fiddle to J, despite that K was the mentor. If anything, I see that series as a good example of a buddy cop thing where both characters feel like equals. But yeah, I don't want Cruise anywhere near GL regardless of the circumstances. I just don't think I need a "movie star" to play this character.

The star of that movie though was Will Smith, and a big part of the movie is K training J to be his replacement. He's an old vet and winding down, so he's trying to find someone to take his place.

I guess my point is though with the MIB thing, is that Cruise will not want to be considered the Tommy Lee Jones of a buddy sci-fi action movie duo. He will not want to hand in the ring at the end or get taken off the board.

My point is, Cruise is not going to want to do that as Hal Jordan. He doesn't do it with Mission: Impossible, do you really think he'd do that with Green Lantern?

Tom does want another franchise and share some screen time though, MI has “the team” and he tried to jump start Dark Universe

Would MIB be the template these days for the GLC movie with Hal and John? The more I think about it, and the obvious MCU influence seen in the AQUAMAN trailer I think they would look to MIB as a road map. Obviously it doesn't completely track and if they were to get Cruise he wouldn't be mirroring Jones, but... copious humor, a vet takes a rookie on an adventure that includes opening the green horn's eyes up to a wider reality, wild alien beings and concepts... I could see them trying to recreate that.

I wouldn't want the GLC film to be so hung up on humor like that but I could see WB thinking that's what people would respond to.

Remember when it was gonna be a straight comedy with jack black?

He’s 56 but he looks about 20 years younger and is in the shape of someone much younger.

Big difference here is that part of the fun was seeing how these various aliens were attempting to blend in with society and the limitations they got around through advanced tech. If it's a buddy cop or war movie, you gotta lean in heavy on those genres with a fresh take on galactic law enforcers who can make whatever they want with green light.

And yet when The Mummy came out, everyone was *****ing about Cruise acting like a "young man" and being paired with a woman about 25 years his junior.

Hal doesn't need to have a romantic relationship in this film so that particular complaint shouldn't be too hard to fix. If he makes it in it will likely be to play a veteran Lantern. People know how old the real Tom Cruise is so that might make some uncomfortable if he's paired off with a much younger woman but that isn't relevant when it comes to action and portraying a leading man in an action role, where physicality and acting ability (along with looking the age of the part) are the important factors. A key reason why MI:6 is being hailed as one of the best action blockbusters of the year despite most of the competitors having much younger leads. And just to be clear, are you saying your voice is with those complaints and/or that they should be given priority when it comes to choosing leads?

In a way it's a reverse but you can still get laughs out of the two human character interacting with aliens on their own worlds in their own societies. But I agree... Done the way I would want you would lean more on the idea of the GLC as a force with a serious mission with a bit more of a squared jawed approach to how you present them.

Heard a rumor that Wahlberg apparently was in the running to play Hal in the DCEU especially if Snyder stayed on with the DCEU but honestly I can actually see Mark Wahlberg as Hal Jordan

Or how about believe it or not John Cena as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern?

Nope. Maybe kilowog if they couldn't get anyone else. But hell no to hal.

Cena as Guy Gardner maybe. It'd even be more hilarious due to how much he'd tower over everyone else yet still be the resident butt monkey.

Nope. No. No. Nope. No.

The artwork looks awesome, but no! :p

Eh...Hal/Carol is a cornerstone of the mythology. Aside from her role in shaping him into a better person (and vice versa, really), the whole "veteran who is away on a mission" thing is not only relevant, but fairly necessary to his character conflict and development. You could have a movie that doesn't revolve around the love story, but it should probably be in there somewhere. Beyond that, Carol can be a very strong female character to complement other strong female characters in the Corps.

If this were a Hal Jordan film there would be no doubt, but I’m not sure they’ll go with that when starting with a GLC film, particularly if building up future Lanterns is the priority. We’ve seen very little of Peter Parker’s love life so far in the MCU for eg because there is too much else going on and he isn’t the ultimate focus.

I agree, unless it's a cameo appearance of sorts, I don't think Carol would be featured in the movie at all.
