The Official Green Lantern Rumors/Speculation Thread

I fail to see why a story conceived by Goyer and Johns is a bad idea. Sounds ****ing awesome to me

For me, Cruise is the most intriguing of the choices if they're going for an longtime already established Hal Jordan , ala the older Affleck Bruce Wayne.

That said, i'm skeptical he would want to do it without a degree of creative control outside of Johns and Goyers ideas, and a mandate that WB may not be willing to give. In other words , he might not want to do it the way WB wants to do it , which has seem to have been in issue as of late with their films in development.

Other than that though, Reynolds and Cooper are the only other two that really interest me.

I don't buy for one second that they would bark up the Reynolds tree again.

Why is Hollywood still trying to make Armie Hammer a lead (well, co-lead)?

This is who DC wants, we don't even know if some of the actors will even be open (Reynolds won't). Can Cooper even be eligible?

Looks like James Marsden may also been on the shortlist.

That would be very interesting to see him as Hal Jordan, especially since he wasn't able to do much with Cyclops. Joel Mchale is also an unexpected choice, and Renyolds won't do because of Deadpool.

Why wouldn't he? He'd be expensive as all get out (which would probably be counter productive on WB's end) but it's not as though WB doesn't have the cash.

I don't know if Marsden would be up for a third Superhero universe. IMO he got shafted during his time in X-Men, and the Returns franchise never caught on.

Then again I haven't really seen him recently other than Westworld, and playing the Anchorman 2 villain. Maybe he would be up for it

I find Reynolds being on any shortlist hard to believe.

From a marketing, box office, and creative pov , I think Cruise is the best choice though there are caveats . If they're looking to build interest and buzz over a property which they've struggled with in the past, and at the same time, instill a degree of confidence to the GA with a character who isn't as big as Batman, Superman, WW, going with someone like Tom Cruise elevates much in the way Downey's casting did for Ironman.

You have proven quantity and an actor who the GA likes , in addition to someone with the charm, chops and gravitas to pull off the role. The idea of the former top gun playing Hal Jordan is inspired casting imo. At the same time, you have a big enough heavy hitter that can give the DCEU a shot in the arm.

The caveats would probably be the creative control . Cruise would likely not put up with a halfbaked script and probably wouldn't want to deal with WB mandates about which other characters to shoehorn in.

In other words, if they use him, WB would have to be prepared for the GL corps to really be a Cruise venture as opposed to a WB Geoff Johns, whoever, mandated project which fits into the larger DCEU.

Yeah, Cruise and Reynolds being on there makes it sound fake to me.

I could buy that Cruise is someone they want to pursue, but it just feels like that would be one franchise too many for him. The Mummy starting up, still going with Mission Impossible, Jack Reacher... I just don't think it would happen.

Unless maybe Hal is treated as the elder statesman of the human GL, ends up dying in the first movie, and John is the main GL from then on.

Jack Reacher is on ice right now. Unless Never Go Back does great ancillary business like the first film (which grossed $200M worldwide), we won't see another film soon.

As for The Mummy, it seems like Cruise is willing to do shared universe films -- or at least lend a hand to begin one. Also, he'd probably bring on someone like Christopher McQuarrie to rework the script and/or direct GLC, which wouldn't be a bad thing. (Unless it's Edward Zwick, then we're screwed.)

I actually think there's substance to this list. Ryan Reynolds coming back is a stretch, but Cooper does have a great relationship with WB. He got a huge backend payout for American Sniper and is directing the A Star Is Born remake with Lady Gaga.

Why are they even considering Reynolds? I thought the reason to have GLC so far away was to distance it from the 2011 film as much as possible.

Edit: If that is the case, at least consider bringing back Mark Strong as Sinestro.

He was also Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine yet they got him to do Deadpool again.

Although he'd been championing for playing Deadpool for years, even after Origins. Green Lantern he's shown no such devotion to.

I could believe them going after Cruise given all of the upsides to his casting. I also buy Reynolds and Cooper as well given that Reynolds and Cooper are much bigger names now than they were in 2010. Gyllenhal and Hammer have both been up for Batman and/or Superman for years so it would make sense they would circle back to them.

Reynolds on the list is an IQ test. to see if people are smart enough to know that the list is fake. IMO

i think so too

i like mardsen a lot and liked him as cyclops but i don't think he has that right kind of swagger/brashness for jordan

and even though it was voice work for cooper, he was in guardians and idk if disney has some sort of exclusivity their big actors? (i'm aware that the TV stuff is different but those characters are usually killed off/story arc is done)

Actually it's possible they'd ask him as a formality or if he simply has right of first refusal. Much like how the makers of Die Hard approached Frank Sinatra (even though it was obvious there was no way he'd do) before going with Bruce Willis because it was a sequel to The Detective.
