The Official Green Lantern Rumors/Speculation Thread

I'm a Marvel guy, but the Green Lantern is an old favorite of mine (along with the Flash for that matter), so this is one DC film that I'm really curious to see if they can pull it off. Especially in light of the 2011 film which I think had some redeeming qualities in spite of its other problems.

That said, while I'm taking that purported short list with a massive grain of salt, some of the names on it strike me as interesting possibilities. Cruise and Marsden would probably be my favorites on it. Though Cooper and McHale wouldn't be bad options either. Hammer and Gylennhaal don't really strike me as good fits for Hal Jordan. I actually wouldn't be opposed to bringing back Reynolds as I thought he did fine in the '11 film, but he'd never do it.

IF... and that's a big if... If there is any truth to WB wanting Reynolds back, then that really concerns me. I have nothing against Reynolds and in fact I think he did the best he could in the GL film. But the movie clearly didn't work for fans, general audiences or critics and WB should do all they can to distance themselves from it. Up until this point they seemed to be doing that but if they do want Reynolds back, then that worries me that their line of thinking is something along the lines of "Well hey, back in 2011, nobody liked Ryan. But thanks to Deadpool, he's cool now! Let's get him back to do GL! We do still have him under contract after all."

I don't know why WB would even consider Reynolds as they should want to distance themselves as much as possible from the previous Green Lantern movie. Then again, WB tends to have a bad habit of making poor decisions when it comes to DCEU.

Plus his appearance would only confuse casual audiences. "Is it a sequel? Is the first Green Lantern part of the DCEU now?" That movie really wasn't well received. So I can't imagine the studio wants to remind people it exists. Putting Reynolds in the costume, even as a reboot, would do just that.

What would most likely make things even more confusing is that the 2011 film had their own Amanda Waller, who was killed off.

She didn't die, actually. I remember hearing back when they wanted GL to be the start of a shared universe, they wanted Waller to be a recurring character ala Nick Fury.

That attack was just how she was going to get her eyepatch.

I would have said definitely not to Reynolds but with them potentially going light and jokey, that's his wheelhouse. I wouldn't see it, but I guess I would only be mildly shocked. Lol

Hal saved her from Hector, we just didn't get to see her after that. She was another character, along with about a dozen GLs, who could have used more screen time instead of the sappy Hal-Carol love story.

From Justin Kroll there's a chance GLC could get fastracked

That said if scripts aren't ready to go, studio is content just shooting AQUAMAN this year till films are ready to go

The 5 films being considered are SIRENS, FLASH, LANTERN, SQUAD 2 and DARK UNIVERSE.

With BATMAN likely shooting in 2018, WB still would like one more DC property to shoot this year other than AQUAMAN

I'm not doubting him, but if it's down to those five, I have serious doubts about GLC being the one to get that golden ticket.

I do too. My money is on Sirens since neither Flash or GLC have directors.

They are also effects heavy movies that will need a lot of time for post production to create top notch effects.

I hate bringing this up, but Marvel Studios' average post-production time wavers between 5-6 months. There's no reason why WB can't do the same without compromising their reputation as a filmmaker-friendly studio.

I don't think GLC or Flash will be that 2018 film, unless the scripts blow away studio execs and they want to fast-track. It'll likely something less VFX heavy like Suicide Squad 2 or Gotham City Sirens.

Oh boy.

Last film Goyer directed was The Unborn in 2009, and that didn't go over so well. If true, then it seems like for every good or somewhat positive thing WB may do, it takes two steps backwards. But this is a rumor for now, so we'll see.

Dead on arrival. WB deserve for their universe to collapse if they let Goyer helm an already damaged property.

And this is coming from someone who defends the guy's input as a screenwriter and consultant.

I don't buy it. Even with WB's questionable decision making thus far, that would seem... very off. I mean, b**** and moan about Snyder, but he was consistently putting out films leading up to MOS, Goyer hasn't directed a film since '09. You could probably counter with Patty Jenkins' light resume, but at least Monster had a good deal of critical praise. What's Goyer got? Two forgotten horror/thriller-y movies and the weakest entry in the Blade trilogy?

I just don't see this at all. But if it's true, Tsujihara has got to go, because... Lord.

Goyer has passion though and a lot of history with the studio. Yeah I could see it

You need a complimentary amount of passion and talent. Goyer is missing the latter component of that equation.

They need to reboot the entire studio.

Not entirely. From a perspective of building story, I think he's great, provided he's got the right collaborator. But if he's got a screenplay credit or in the director's chair, my feelings range from "preferably not" to "hell no".

I was referring to directing. Of which he is conjectured to do. He has no talent for it. And his writing only goes story deep. His dialogue and characterization are mediocre.

I wouldn't put much stock into what Sneider says. The head of WB's New Line label, Toby Emmerich, got a promotion as co-chair of WB with Kevin Tsujihara two months ago and he's made some promising changes. The guy has a reputation of being director-friendly and creative freedom, but even he knows better to suggest Goyer direct another film.

I think Goyer is content with being a writer and producer, I don't imagine him wanting to relive another Blade: Trinity directing nightmare.

Emmerich will likely want to pair Goyer up with a director who shares his vision for GLC and/or loves GL. The latter would be preferrable.

Yup, i dont believe it too, it make no sense indeed.

Yeah look, I agree. He's definitely not my favourite choice but I can see why the studio would lean towards him.

That said, it's like when zak penn wrote every marvel movie. Surely there are other writers and creatives who can be given a go by now
