Guardians of the Galaxy The Official Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Rotten Tomatoes/Critic Reaction Thread

That's not true. A lot of Spanish reviews also get submitted.
Yeah and generally from South America only.

This is not true, there are reviews in other languages, that get translated for RT. Not that it really matters what language a reviewer speaks anyways.
It doesn't matter to me what language. But RT is limited in what continents it takes reviews from. For example besides the US as an English speaking country they sometimes also use Australia but strangely no UK. In fact they don't really cover Europe at all (not that I can see). Or Asia for that matter.

People are different and as a result so are critics depending on their country. The RT critics score is just too limited for my taste.

and Gunn not making it clear that the movie takes place only a short time after Vol. 1.

It said “1980“ in the beginning and “34 years later“ in the next scene. One might think that's enough to spell it out that it is set in 2014.

Cool, so we're pretty much done here. Nice that it has managed to stay above both 80% and 7/10.

There are a lot of UK review sites represented on RT (at least 30-40) which is why we always see those high Bond RT scores (and often other British films) before it gets to the US.

From Asia we don't get much aside from the English language reviews from The South China Morning Post, The Japan Times and the Bangkok Post.

Yeah I was confused a bit with that one, as I assumed it was set in real time but it's supposed to take place a few months after the first one and not in current time, which is why there's a jump forward for the Guardians in Infinity war.

Metacritic gets cited a lot too.

Currently the metascore for Guardians 2 is 67 based on 44 reviews
30 positive
13 mixed
1 negative

And the user score there is 8.3

Guardians 1 had a 76

Yeah it's basically pre-Age of Ultron.

I tend to go with the idea that anything less than a 10 point difference on RT is fairly negligible. Any actual difference in quality at that point is kind of swamped by more arbitrary and random influences ( ie, which movies a reviewer had seen in the weeks beforehand, or even just whether they had a bad night the last night, for *really* small differences ). Which fits with the GotG 1/2 comparison- the sequel is somewhat worse reviewed, due to some pacing issues and the lack of the first one's wham bang originality.

Yeh it's at 82% now and it will stay around the 82/83% mark. Which is still good.

Yeah. It's ticked upwards, but with 263 reviews, it's not going much of anywhere. Another really good job by Marvel. I thought the villain was terrific. Very different approach. The ending was absolutely nailed and I loved the character development. A good setup, I think, for IW.

81% be damned. This is in my top 5 MCU films. Top 10 CBMs.

I can't remember the predictions for this but I can't imagine they were all that much higher than where it ended up. A few mid to high 80s I guess.

The most personal, ambitious, emotional and singular MCU film to date. Possibly the best as well.

When people apply film theory to blockbuster films in the future, Vol. 2 will be in that canon. Mark my words.

Richness of emotion and spirit.

Guys, most mainstream blockbuster movies would KILL to have an RT score of 75%+

Look at the RT scores of the rest of the movies in the Top 10 right now.

I'm sure everyone is roughly aware of that but it's just been a bit weird how the early score this time led to quite a lot of pessimism.

The current top 10 is a pretty low bar.

We're talking about an all-time, top ten superhero movie.

There's a bunch of classic genre films with scores in the low 80's. John Carpenter has a few.

This will finish around 82-83%

And? This score is still better than a pretty big chunk of CBMs.

Not to mention that RT critics aren't the "end all, be all." Look at Dr. Strange. 90% on RT? I think it's a downright inferior movie to GOTG2.

I just don't understand the downtrodden tone about the RT score for this ... Especially one that is not only certified fresh, but was certified fresh VERY early on as the reviews came in.

Because people want 90+% on RT so it can be in 'the pantheon' or used in inevitable debates as numerical proof...This is pretty much a Deadpool reception critically, but because many were expecting critics to dump on that and those same critics to call this a masterpiece, the perception is different. Vol. 2 is arguably the greatest achievement Marvel Studios has had, and the fact that it's 82% vs. 90% has little barring in my eyes. People have just become obsessed with RT numbers and view everything in a vacuum. I'd wager that this film will be seen in higher regard down the line then some CBM's currently 'recommended' more on RT. In fact I'll be shocked if it isn't. We'll talk in 10 years  Proper context.

Top five is pretty comfortably:

Captain America: Civil War
Iron Man
The Avengers
The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
Captain America: The Winter Soldier

This knocked the first GOTG out of fifth place.

If I think a movie is great then I feel it should recieve a standing, prestige or distinction that reflects that greatness.

But let's pretend like people who want their top movies to have a very positive reception, are being totally unreasonable.

I'm the same, I feel this should be in the 90's and want it to be as acclaimed as other CBM's. But 82% is nothing to shake a leg at either. Is there anyone else in the blockbuster game with as unique and grand a voice as James Gunn? The guys spirit and personality is bursting through every frame. Yeah, sometimes he has a tendency to color outside the lines or be uncompromisingly self-indulgent, but this dude is one-of-a-kind. I hope he stays in the MCU in some capacity beyond Vol. 3. If not then it's been a blast.

Very Zen philosophy.

I can respect that. :woot:
