He's actually 6"2
Bats and Supes are very often drawn similarly so it's not like we're associating him with such a radically different character. Cavill just has the quintessential superhero look; tall, handsome, chiseled, dark hair. Just so happens that Bats and Supes fit this bill.
I could easily see him as either character, though at this point and time I would definitely prefer him to play Supes simply because it's a much harder role to cast.
RE: his height - Yeah, he's always quite a bit taller than JRM in the Tudors, and yes, JRM wears footwear to make himself taller on that show as well. I'd say Cavill is between 6'1" and 6'2", and as I've said, I think anyone 6'0" and over would be fine for the role, height-wise. So that wouldn't be an issue with him at all. You can particularly tell in candids where, even if he's not the tallest person in the photo, he's always ONE OF the tallest.
Here's a (ridiculously long) candid video I found of him standing around an airport, so you can see him around people of all heights. And aside from a few tall guys who pop up in the background, he's taller than most of the people in it, and easily taller than the "average" sea of people there, so 6'1"-6'2" looks right on the money:
It would be a piece of cake for anyone to make him look like the tallest person in the room on screen. Definitely not a problem.
CAVILL DAMN IT! He is, by far, the actor with the most positive attributes.
He's head and shoulders above the rest.

Right now, Cavill is my top choice, if they are not going to bring back Routh.
Cavill has the Superman looks, can act and is the right age and can get into Shape easily.
6' 1 is good height, using camera angles and shoes he can look taller.
Cavill looks a lot lot better than most of the candidates being suggested in the Casting thread, who look like a thug, or look sinister and creepy.
So, the choices are (in order) Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer.
Please keep Jon Hamm away from Superman.
