Finally saw the issue, great great stuff. It's funny....hilarious even; AGES ago, after the first modern Hulk movie there was going to be a cartoon show called Hulk and Son...I thought it was a terrible sounding idea, but now we have a complete Hulk family, and despite odd and crappy beginnings for some of the members (Redshulkie having to be connected to poochie) I'm loving where we're at. Things are not ideal with Betty for some, but I'm intrigued how their dynamic will grow and affect things between Bruce and Betty.
My thoughts Spoiler warning:
As it was said, the fights were amazing, but the heart was phenomenal. The art really sold the power behind each hit, the emotion and inner turmoil. It's easy to show Banner vulnerable, but to show the Hulk with anything other than an angry snarl or even a Fixit sneer, can be odd and potentially awful if not executed right. Here it all comes together and finally Banner shows he's not a monster like his father. He's not perfect, but he's got another chance. I think Skarr abonded the grudge not because of the saving, but everything leading up to that point. He's seen how selfless Bruce has been during this close to the WWH arc, and he saw that his father, not savage, not Fixit, was back. He pounded him, but showed that he doesn't want to hurt him. The fact that he had to goad him also may be part of it. He may have heard the legends, but thought that they either were just legends, exaggerations or outright lies. Even if he believed them, he probably thought that Hulk's acts were for gain, (they did make him a king in the end) or to repay a debt to his brothers. The people he saved were NOBODIES, not Warbound, not nobles, not even fellow heroes. He also showed that for all his destructive power, Hulk is always paying attention to those around him and never wants to hurt the “innocent.” That moment also showed Hulk's vulnerability; he was getting beat down, and instead of retaliating, he left himself open to more attacks in order to help people. I think everything came together and just shoved open his eyes. Maybe he did believe all along, but he wanted to extract revenge for the pain, and just see his father and get a worthy fight from him.
Another thing I liked in this was Betty. While brief, I did enjoy her moments; she's still in there considerably and I eagerly await her future appearances. Like I said before, I hated the idea of her being a Hulk originally, but given Pak's writing, it's turned out great and she's considerably grown on me. Can't wait for the future!
Interestingly enough, looking at the preview I posted earlier, I can see that Bruce is now done treating Skarr like a soldier. They're on the beach and he's playing (probably before whatever threat shows up), but since it's unlettered we don't know why Betty freaks out and bashes the crap out of Bruce. Maybe the police have something to do with it?
