The official Jonah Hex thread.

If you read it again he is actually kinda bashing Marvel by saying that they put out set dates and such when really a GOOD studio (ala WB) will only give you a month and year or just the year. It just sounded wierd how he worded it.

It has nothing to do with being a "good" studio or not. It has to do with being a realistic and experienced studio and not selling the release date as anything more than a general target years in advance. If WB can move a billion dollar franchise in Harry Potter, they can move Jonah Hex to where it's most advantageous. Heck, for all we know Disney/Pixar might be thinking of pushing back Toy Story 3 until winter and push it for a Best Picture Oscar given the expanded field and WB is staking out ground there.

Right now, I think it's best to think of Jonah Hex as coming Summer 2010. WB could bump it some weeks and months in either direction as there's enough post-production time to get it out pretty much anytime next year.

Have we heard anything on the budget of the film yet? If it's in the $50 to $60 million range, it probably only needs a $30 million or so opening weekend to be assured of a profit. If so, I want Bat Lash in a sequel.

O.k. maybe not set in stone, but Marvel acts like announcing a release date years ahead means something. Remember a year ago when they made a big deal after Iron Man opened about their upcoming slate with release dates and logos? And we sit here a year later and all but Iron Man 2 have changed.

Actually Iron Man 2 was originally slated for April 30 but they pushed it back a week.

Yes, because the core TOY STORY 3 crowd is also the core JONAH HEX crowd.

:).

Doesn't matter, it means theaters have to choose between showing TS3 or Hex, they'll go with TS3. So Jonah Hex has less theaters to play in. Plus a movie can't do well with just the core crowd.
Its August release date seemed fine but maybe WB wanted the film out before The Green Hornet so audiences don't tire of 'comic book action movies'.

WB has Nightmare on Elm Street, Sex and the City 2, Jonah Hex, Inception and a Todd Phillips comedy for next summer.

The poster in a better quality, not really high-res but this we do until a even better one pop out.

Jeez Fox is hot. Her waist is creepy though.

I do think its a bit silly them releasing this the same week as Toy Story 3, possibly one of the most anticipated threequels ever, Hex will just be washed under the storm of that movie getting a sequel after so long, strange move.

Totally agree. But I must say it's mostly the fans to blame for thinking a film is set in stone once a release date is announced years in advance. Mostly Marvel fanboys. But August just seemd like an ideal release date. Usually you put your comedy film in June if you already have an action tentpole later in the summer, which appears to be the case with Inception. A low-budget action movie in June, even with big stars, is a little too risky. They are better off releasing Hex closer to Airbender than they are TS3.

I see. Where I live, theaters show up to 10 films at once in small theaters, and 20-30 in the larger ones. And the "core crowd" thing was a joke. While I'm sure that damn near everyone will want to see TOY STORY 3, most of TOY STORY 3's business will be children and families. Most of JONAH HEX's won't be.

And now... JONAH HEX!
11:49
Director of JONAH HEX, Jimmy Hayward comes out now to talk about it and whatnot. He is a HUGE fan of the comic book.
11:49
Megan Fox's last scene was shot 48 hours ago.
11:53

The first ever trailer just played. More Western than horror, then monsters and ****.
11:54
Oh damn Megan Fox and Josh Brolin just came on stage. Brolin gets more screams than Fox.
11:55
Brolin is stoked to be in a Western, as is the whole cast. His make up looks cool as hell, btw.
11:56
Brolin can't believe how many people are in Hall H.
11:57
People screamig out I LOVE YOU MEGAN an THE GOONIES ROCKS!
11:57
Fox has no idea how she came to be in this movie Brolin does. She's hot. She plays a ****e and they have a '****ed up' relationship.
11:59

It's true, Fox is hot. Even in person.
12:00
I'm surprised at how much more WESTERN this film looks rather than HORROR or SUPERNATURAL. It's mostly a Western. No Army of the Undead. A Western Action Fim, essentially, as described by the director.
12:00
Q&A!
12:00
"New Orleans is ****in' gnarly, man." - Brolin on filming this movie.
12:01
Apparently the film was actually very low budget, though it looks like it cost a ****load of money. The actors didn't do this for the money, but for the love of it.
12:01
Brolin thinks this may spawn more Westerns in the future.
12:02
Weird chick asks if Fox is more into Westerns or Horror. Fox says Westerns, but wants everyone to see JENNIFER'S BODY. It's awesome.
12:03
*****e bag asks if Fox would be into making some sex tapes, and he's immediately thrown out of Hall H. *****e bag.
12:04
Next guy asks if she could be attracted to him since she was able to be attracted to burned up Hex. She says yes. It's called acting.
12:05
Fox is into making action movies, and having guys beat her ass. Thats what she said.
12:09
A question about chemistry between Brolin and Fox. Brolin wants to make a crack at him, but the questioner was so nice he couldn't do it. Brolin just cracked up the entire Hall H by mimmicking this guy's niceness. NICE!!!
12:09
Again, sitting in this chair is KILLING ME!
12:10
Brolin is having a ton of fun with the crowd. He also liked going from W and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN to HEX. He thinks audiences are smarter than studios give them credit for. He likes doing more original films, and this here is the perfect example.
12:11
And that's it for JONAH HEX! Exit Stage Left

Also, (via. Twitter) Megan Fox totally owned FirstShowing.net's Bob Stencil with her quip...

@devincf: Megan Fox just dissed Bob Stencil. "Are you doing Johnny Depp in FEAR AND LOATHING?"

 that Brolin was actually there.

Probably on the first plane to London though to shoot the Woody Allen movie.

I cant friggin wait to see this trailer! :D

Joblo.com had lots of good things to say about Hex, especially it definitely feeling more like a western than horror, which was key IMO

SDCC: The Jonah Hex Panel!

jonahhexpanel.jpg
The world's first look at Jonah Hex just screened in SDCC's Hall H. Though it had the look and feel of a trailer, director Jimmy Hayward seemed to say that it was a special SDCC-only presentation. He also made the note that, while the film has some supernatural stylings, there's no Voodoo king or army of the dead.

We're told about Jonah Hex as we see him and someone asks how he got his scar. He says that he's never told anyone the story, though we see a flash of him being branded. A voice tells us that, since then, he's walked with one foot in life and one foot in death.

There's a magical/vooddoo quality to some of the shots, including a live crow crawling out of Hex's mouth.

Hex is approached by a government official who tells him that, because of his expertise at killing, the US has need of his services.

There's a fantastic shot of Michael Fassbender sitting on a train track with a dynamite plunger in a long, quiet scene where he whistles, waiting for the train. (Fassbender explained in the panel that his character came a lot from Alex in "A Clockwork Orange" and it's very easy to see on-screen).

There's a lot of Megan Fox. One guy grabs her and says, "I own you." She knocks him down and says, "Never was much for being owned." We see her doing a lot of fighting and there's a shot of her from behind, nude with Hex in bed.

There's a bunch of explosions, including the train and Hex riding in on a horse with machine guns mounted on the side.

There's a bunch of Hex scar comments, including one guy asking how he got it and Hex responding, "I'll show you."

The title comes up with just the letters "JH," which turns into the full logo.

Post-title, there's a scene of another guy asking what happened to his face. Hex says, "I cut myself shaving," shoves an axe in his head and says, "What happened to yours?"

The film definitely has a big, big look to it, despite a relatively small budget. Production value is surprisingly good.
:yay:

It's official. This movie is gonna suck. Why would WB open it opposite Toy Story 3? They just want an excuse for when it flops.

I wouldn't count it out just yet. I mean, judging from the Comic-Con panel they made JH with a small budget (and the summer release could help with its earnings). Plus, not everyone will be going to TS3 right on opening weekend, but some will wait until the week after when it's less crowded.

And there are going to be some guys who are going to go up to the box office and opt to see Jonah Hex rather than "a kids' movie."

Right here. :)

I liked the first two Toy Story films but this one definitely seems too little too late.

I'm sure Paramount will move the Footloose remake but I don't think Disney will blink with Toy Story 3. That's a 70-75 million opening weekend right there. Is the Megan Fox factor going to help?

I think the reception of Jennifer's Body will be able to tell us if the Megan Fox factor will help or hinder Jonah Hex.

unfamiliar with Jonah Hex

but the poster looks cool and from the footage description he sounds badass

love this

Fox is really starting to give me that Jolie vibe at least lookwise.

Hell yeah he does, I love that scene/line you quoted.

I think it's about time we get more badass protagonists in future films. Tough guys similar to a lot of 80's action films and older westerns.
