Hope for the best, but this film sounds like a debacle at this point.

yea its so depressing things seem to be a mess for hex. But like i said i hope at least the film will be decent enough.

REGARDING THE TRAILER:
A studio spokesman insists a trailer will finally make its debut in front of New Line's A Nightmare on Elm Street, which opens April 30, and that the movie will open as scheduled on June 18. And director Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) texted Vulture to say, "Trailer and film are looking great!" And yet, with this movie's erratic history of creative differences and reshoots, it's hard not to wonder...

REGARDING THE SCORE AND BEHIND THE SCENES ANTICS:

From Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds:

"What I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem to be finished to me," said Hinds. "I’d heard a little rumor: 'This **** ain’t gonna be ready.' But then again, Warner Bros. is such a ****ing bastard. They’re like, 'The **** comes out on the day it’s supposed to.' But what do I know?"

While Hinds looks like he's pretty much guaranteed that Warner Bros. won't let him near a film project again, he has a reason to be frustrated. Mastodon first worked with composer John Powell, who was co-scoring the film, but as the production dragged on, his commitment to other projects forced him to leave and he was replaced by Marco Beltrami. With Mastodon embarking on tour, it made writing music for the film a bit of a cluster****: "And there was no way [Beltrami] could connect with me: They brought all the new scenes to us, but I was on tour this entire time, so I had no time to preconceive what I wanted the movie to sound like. Being so busy...it's hard to be creative when you're going through the same motions every day [onstage]."

Good job, WB, releasing the film before it's finished.

I'm surprised to learn that JH is a "mega-budget" film. I thought it was made for cheap.

I don't know what's going on with this film, to be honest. disappointment!

Good job, WB, releasing the film before it's finished.

As far as I can tell, Jonah Hex is still 2 months away from it's release date. And considering how long ago principal photography ended, if it's not going to be ready in the next month or so, it's on the director. There's been plenty of time to work on the film.

well i cant wait to see some darn footage for the film. as i said i still hope the film will turn out to be ok.

movie comes out in 2 months, trailer in 2 weeks...............yet there was nothing at wondercon? and everything is OK?

yea it sucks things as i said seem to be a total mess with the film. but if its a go i will be happy to see it. but yea they should have probably delayed release.

It is a damn shame, a Hex movie done right could be really, really good, and something different in the genre, I hope the movie can still turn out okay but my faith is all but gone.

Like the rest of you I am definitely disappointed with all the problems this movie has had. I was really hoping for this to succeed but due to the lack of marketing I don't think that will happen.

I will wait for the trailer though and hopefully it brings hope back to us.

I originally thought the metal band was just doing songs for the soundtrack album, but they are actually scoring scenes in the movie according to their singer:

We talked to Brent Hinds, the guitarist and singer of the heavy-metal band Mastodon, which has been recording and rerecording the film's soundtrack since last fall. "What I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem to be finished to me," says Hinds, adding, "I’d heard a little rumor: 'This **** ain’t gonna be ready.' But then again, Warner Bros. is such a ****ing bastard. They’re like, 'The **** comes out on the day it’s supposed to.' But what do I know? I’m just the dude to whom they’re like, ‘Hey, play some crazy ****in’ music!'"

When asked what it was sounding like, the response was simply: "Needless to say, pretty heavy!"

Having a metal band score a Jonah Hex movie is a bad idea. I don't want to hear modern metal music in a movie set in the old west. Having metal music in this tells me that the director and the producers are not taking the film seriously as a Western. Does Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven or The Good, The Bad and The Ugly have metal scores? Hell no. That would destroy the mood and amosphere and period feel. Jonah Hex just needs some atmospheric period sounding mood music. Not crazy ****in' metal music. Is this Spinal Tap or Jonah Hex?
I hope someone ultimately decides to keep the metal music out of the movie, and just release it on a soundtrack album, but not play it in the movie.

Everything I hear about this movie makes it sound worse and worse.

I'm unfamiliar with Mastodon. How "metal" are they? Are they capable of doing something along the lines of Neil Young's DEAD MAN soundtrack?

I certainly agree that Mastodon is probably a gamble, but trying something different with the score can pay off big time. Like Quentin Tarantino throwing a Bowie song into a WWII movie.

Cool pic rashad.

Wow...i didn't have a clue things were this bad behind the scenes.

Maybe in hindsight it was a bad idea to hire the director of Horton Hears a Who.The jump from animation to live action must have been harder than it seemed even with such a good cast of actors.:o

Although history shows that these things do affect the final cut negatively i hope Hex still turns out well. Because if this does well more smaller, obscure DC characters could get their own movies made under 100 million dollars.

A bit of promotion coming in June. Sorry if you guys have mentioned this already.

Jonah Hex is not a conventional western, if you want to see that you can choose between hundreds of them. It's a "weird west", so unconventional music is not a bad thing.

Does anyone know "keoma"? that has some weird music.

Here is some of their music:

It's pretty obvious that the metal band had not been asked to do non-heavy metal music for the movie.
Their singer said: "I’m just the dude to whom they’re like, ‘Hey, play some crazy ****in’ music!'"

Jonah Hex should be scored with atmospheric Spaghetti Western music, not crazy ****in’ heavy metal music.

I certainly agree that Mastodon is probably a gamble, but trying something different with the score can pay off big time. Like Quentin Tarantino throwing a Bowie song into a WWII movie.
David Bowie's classic "Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)" with the line "putting out fire with gasoline" suited that one scene in Inglourious Basterds where Shosanna gets ready to burn the Nazi's in a fire with gasoline. However, if Bowie songs were played in scenes throughout the movie that wouldn't have suited the film as a whole. There is a big difference between using one David Bowie song in one scene of Inglourious Basterds and having a metal band score Jonah Hex.

Film composer John Powell was originally going to be scoring Jonah Hex on his own. Then metal band Mastodon were brought in by director Jimmy Hayward to add "flavor" to John Powell's score. Mastodon's singer says John Powell welcomed the collaboration. Then when refilming was done by director Francis Lawrence with many additional scenes, composer John Powell had to leave the project in order to honor his commitments to compose music for other films. Marco Beltrami was brought in to finish the Jonah Hex score, and work with the metal band. But Marco Beltrami ideas are different, and he wanted a different flavor for Jonah Hex from the material Mastodon had previously written and recorded. And at this point, the metal band are on a world tour.

According to Mastodon's singer Brent Hinds, Marco Beltrami wants to go in an entirely different direction with the Jonah Hex score.

There is no word yet if any of Mastodon’s music will stay in the picture. http://filmmusicreporter.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/beltrami-takes-over-jonah-hex/
Marco Beltrami previously scored the Western film 3:10 to Yuma with atmospheric Spaghetti Western instrumentation. That's the kind of sound Jonah Hex should have.

i see nothing wrong with a metal band doing the music for the film. Whos to say the film music will actually be metal songs during the film itself. They could be doing muscial scores for scenes, then of course some of their current band songs could be playing in the closing credits.

Also wicked new hex photo.

I doubt that there will be metal music in the movie now that film composer Marco Beltrami has taken over the score, and he wanted a different flavor for Jonah Hex from the material the metal band Mastodon had previously written and recorded.

Marco Beltrami wanted a more restrained, subtle approach than the vigorous shredding Mastodon had recorded for Jonah Hex.

“All of a sudden, there’s this new guy, who went in a different direction. And there was no way he could connect with me,” explaining how Marco Beltrami wanted a more subtle approach that didn't allow much room for Mastodon.

Marco Beltrami made major changes to the soundtrack. So I'm not so concerned about the score anymore after reading all that. Marco Beltrami is a appropriate composer for Jonah Hex. His 3:10 to Yuma score is a great Spaghetti Western instrumentation.

Also wicked new hex photo.

That new photo does look great! I like this one, too:
