A studio spokesman insists a trailer will finally make its debut in front of New Line's A Nightmare on Elm Street, which opens April 30, and that the movie will open as scheduled on June 18. And director Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) texted Vulture to say, "Trailer and film are looking great!" And yet, with this movie's erratic history of creative differences and reshoots, it's hard not to wonder...
From Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds:
"What I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem to be finished to me," said Hinds. "I’d heard a little rumor: 'This **** ain’t gonna be ready.' But then again, Warner Bros. is such a ****ing bastard. They’re like, 'The **** comes out on the day it’s supposed to.' But what do I know?"
While Hinds looks like he's pretty much guaranteed that Warner Bros. won't let him near a film project again, he has a reason to be frustrated. Mastodon first worked with composer John Powell, who was co-scoring the film, but as the production dragged on, his commitment to other projects forced him to leave and he was replaced by Marco Beltrami. With Mastodon embarking on tour, it made writing music for the film a bit of a cluster****: "And there was no way [Beltrami] could connect with me: They brought all the new scenes to us, but I was on tour this entire time, so I had no time to preconceive what I wanted the movie to sound like. Being so busy...it's hard to be creative when you're going through the same motions every day [onstage]."
Good job, WB, releasing the film before it's finished.![]()

I originally thought the metal band was just doing songs for the soundtrack album, but they are actually scoring scenes in the movie according to their singer:
Having a metal band score a Jonah Hex movie is a bad idea. I don't want to hear modern metal music in a movie set in the old west. Having metal music in this tells me that the director and the producers are not taking the film seriously as a Western. Does Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven or The Good, The Bad and The Ugly have metal scores? Hell no. That would destroy the mood and amosphere and period feel. Jonah Hex just needs some atmospheric period sounding mood music. Not crazy ****in' metal music. Is this Spinal Tap or Jonah Hex?
I hope someone ultimately decides to keep the metal music out of the movie, and just release it on a soundtrack album, but not play it in the movie.

We talked to Brent Hinds, the guitarist and singer of the heavy-metal band Mastodon, which has been recording and rerecording the film's soundtrack since last fall. "What Ive seen so far doesnt seem to be finished to me," says Hinds, adding, "Id heard a little rumor: 'This **** aint gonna be ready.' But then again, Warner Bros. is such a ****ing bastard. Theyre like, 'The **** comes out on the day its supposed to.' But what do I know? Im just the dude to whom theyre like, Hey, play some crazy ****in music!'"

When asked what it was sounding like, the response was simply: "Needless to say, pretty heavy!"

I'm unfamiliar with Mastodon. How "metal" are they?
It's pretty obvious that the metal band had not been asked to do non-heavy metal music for the movie. Are they capable of doing something along the lines of Neil Young's DEAD MAN soundtrack?
David Bowie's classic "Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)" with the line "putting out fire with gasoline" suited that one scene in Inglourious Basterds where Shosanna gets ready to burn the Nazi's in a fire with gasoline. However, if Bowie songs were played in scenes throughout the movie that wouldn't have suited the film as a whole. There is a big difference between using one David Bowie song in one scene of Inglourious Basterds and having a metal band score Jonah Hex.I certainly agree that Mastodon is probably a gamble, but trying something different with the score can pay off big time. Like Quentin Tarantino throwing a Bowie song into a WWII movie.
Cool. Make-up doesn't look bad.
i see nothing wrong with a metal band doing the music for the film. Whos to say the film music will actually be metal songs during the film itself. They could be doing muscial scores for scenes, then of course some of their current band songs could be playing in the closing credits.
Also wicked new hex photo.
