The Official Michael Shannon IS General Zod - Part 1

This is fantastic news! Michael Shannon is one of my new favorite actors. His role in My Son My Son What Have Ye Done is on par is Klaus Kinski in Aguirre, simply an amazing movie and performance.

When hearing this today, its just another huge disappointment. I think I'm going to stop following MOS and give up on Superman all together on the big screen.

Its unreal how people here have screaming for something new and haven't gotten a single thing new yet they are happy Routh is gone along with wanting to get rid of Williams' score.

Another Superman movie with General Zod and people are happy. Unreal. I got a feeling this movie is going to be an epic dud.
just because we want something new doesn't mean we want EVERYTHING to be new. i'm one of those people that are happy that Routh and the Williams score won't be used but i don't want Superman to all of the sudden be blonde hair, brown eyed just because it's something new. of course i want this movie to be different from the Donner films, but certain things HAVE to be the same. i want this movie to be different than the Donner films more or less in TONE rather than plot.

in the grand scheme of things, it just makes sense to me to have Zod as a villain in the first film. i've stated before that none of the other villains fit the criteria for Superman's first test as well as Zod does. Brainiac is too much, Metallo and Parasite aren't enough........Zod is JUST RIGHT.

It's amazing people think they can come up with a better story than goyer and the nolan bros.

What's up with casting announcements coming out on Sundays? I take it that's on purpose but for what reason?

Words cannot express how disappointing this is. Seriously, can we have a Superman film NOT about Krypton! It's like people forget he is a symbol of hope for Earth and get bogged down all the time in the fact he is an alien. THAT'S NOT WHAT MAKES HIM INTERESTING!!! His position on Earth is what makes Superman what he is. The powers are secondary.

Plus, we've seen Zod! Zod and Luthor have been done to death on film. Yeah, we need Luthor, but why Zod AGAIN! Why not Brainiac or any other villain that can physically fight him. Why one we have already seen!

Not jazzed by this at all.

Well sure, Snyder and Co. will present their own version of Zod...but it will be inspired by the current comic version...introduced by Richard Donner in Superman:The Movie.
Why?
Every movie needs a catch phrase..a marketable hook that will spread like wildfire and adhere to peoples mind like crazy glue.
Do you really think they are going to pass on using the phrase,
"Kneel before Zod!" ?????

Hell, no! As I wrote before, that is one of the most memorable movie quotes of all time, on par with "Luke, I am your father" and "I'm going to give you an offer you can't refuse."

Think about how you can market the hell out of "Kneel before Zod" or just plain "Kneel" posters and t-shirts...

I know, I know.
Snyder wants you to see his movie as if no previous Superman flicks had ever been made. We can all play pretend for him, but If they cast Ursa and Non (Donner Superman characters) it will be pretty hard to do so with a straight face.

Anyone tried any "Kneel" promo poster manips?

Now.....who will be cast as Lex?

They may use the phrase in the film itself. And maybe the trailers. But who knows? I mean from a marketing standpoint if they are trying to distance themselves (I remember during the Begins era people said they had to use the Elfman theme or no one would understand the legacy) from the previous series. I mean the Donner style was in SR so people still have it pretty fresh in mind. So I'm sure they marketing wise may try to distance themselves from the other series. To let the audience know this is a reboot and a different take.

It would be cool to have character posters and the one with Zod just simplly says: "Kneel" under it. But I think marketing wise they won't use it, just as they did not use any famous phrases or elements from Burton's Batman films in Nolan's films marketing campaigns. Strictly from a marketing stand point they will try to stay away from that.

However in the film it would be cool to have him say it. But who knows? Just speculation at this point.

Lex I have no idea. I am more interested in who they will get to play Jor-El. Just because it is hard to top Brando.

zod being done once before is being done to death, even though it will be NOTHING at all like before

Done to death means he's been used over and over and over...

He was only in two movies, really only one since in the first Superman movie he was only present for five minutes.

uh...it IS an origin tale....

which is what makes Zod a good villain for an origin tale. it shows the dynamic between these 2 aliens that come from Krypton. one wants to rule Earth, one wants to protect it.

But again, why use him? He had his time. He had his iconic performance. We have so many better villains THAN Zod is. Why must we use Zod again? Why does the threat have to be Kryptonian? Why can't it be an Earth based threat?

The films and shows getting bogged down in Krypton is irritating.

I'm excited for this. This means we'll have two super beings battle (hopefully). How I long to see an epic super battle on the big screen again!

I understand what your are saying and where you are coming from but I still fully disagree.

Superman is not the pop icon he was, in film his day fizzled out in 1980. Most kids of today don't know the mythology of him. Krypton is his origin, this is an origin story, it is re-telling the story for a new generation. You would be amazed how many forget or know the back story of Superman, and how many just don't care. They know the icon but they don't go much further than that.

So I disagree and understand I want Brainiac real bad as well but shoe horning him into a origin story would take away from that umph and amazing story he could have. We know this was going to be an origin story using Brainiac during that would not give him his due. I say I will wait for the sequel.

But to eaches own.

haha, i wonder if we're gonna get a line similar to how Lois said she has already done Superman...

Jimmy: Why don't you fight Zod?
Superman: I've done Zod!
Jimmy: YOU KNELT BEFORE ZOD???!!!!

Yes. Why not make it about his rise in Metropolis. Why do you need to focus on the Kryptonian end? AGAIN! You can make an origin Superman film without making it about Krypton.

Again, it was done. Why must it be done this way?

i can tell you haven't really been reading the latest posts on this thread.

Okay? I'm just giving my reaction. I didn't read comment prior to posting. Do I need to in posting my thoughts?

They should use Faora, Zod's wife. Ursa was based off of her. That would be one way to create some distinction from the Donner films since everyone's complaining.

I agree. As well as replacing Non with Quex-Ul or Jax-Ur.

Why does the threat have to be Kryptonian? Why can't it be an Earth based threat?
Superman's biggest threats are Kryptonian based....Zod, Brainiac, Doomsday. also, we had an Earth based threat LAST time in Superman Returns...and look how that turned out.

But again, why use him? He had his time. He had his iconic performance. We have so many better villains THAN Zod is. Why must we use Zod again? Why does the threat have to be Kryptonian? Why can't it be an Earth based threat?

The films and shows getting bogged down in Krypton is irritating.

Joker had his iconic performance before too and he was used again but in a different interpretation.

The same can and will most likely happened with Zod. His presence alone in the film almost guarantees a more grand film considering who he is to Superman, as well as an epic showdown.

Because it's a story by Goyer with Nolan's approval, chances are it will have a theme. They choose a villain to fit that theme and the story they want to tell, not because "It would be uber-cool if *so and so* were in the movie!"

Why not someone like Metallo, Parasite, Bizarro, etc. Again, why Kryptonians? You can easily provide an Earth based threat on Superman's level.

I recently saw Michael Shannon in a screen test for "The Iceman" based upon the hitman Richard Kuklinski. I can say this without a doubt in my mind, he's headed for big things. I'm glad he got a role like this, because I know the quality he can bring to the character.

No one should be complaining. This is a Super day to be a Superman fan!

It guarantees cool fights, yes, but it doesn't realyl give me anything new. That is my problem.

And I disagree with making this about Krypton. Writers, shows, and films are too bogged down in Krypton. Even SR used Krypton's tech as the threat. A lot of Superman's dynamic with Earth gets no attention anymore.

omg...just go away....

i just gave you a good reason why it should be done that way and all you can say is, "IT'S BEEN DONE! OMG, HISTORY IS NOT ALLOWED TO REPEAT ITSELF!!! EVAR!!!" it's really annoying...

Okay? I'm just giving my reaction. I didn't read comment prior to posting. Do I need to in posting my thoughts?
it would help. you're coming off as emotional wreck right now and it's really annoying. you've got too much Romulan when you need to have more Vulcan.

EDIT: actually whatever....post away, just get it out of your system so we can move on.
