It is so funny to hear the argument! I guess since the first Porsche, lambo, Ferrari, came out there should never be another!?? WRONG things always improve as they should so have an open mind for crying out loud!

Man, first Bryan singer had the intention to put him in "Returns", and now this. Is Zod really THAT popular, or does Hollywood still not know any baddies beyond the Donnerverse?

I dont understand.. really, i dont.

While ppl complain about Zod because "hes been done before", at the same time those same ppl want to see Williams score, Clark arrival at Metropolis and Superman stopping natural disaster.

ALL OF THOSE THINGS done before! And even more than Zod!

Haha, gotta love it. A fourth Academy Award nominated actor is added, making 80% of the cast an acting talent powerhouse -- with more to come. The majority of the discussion: Zod??? /Donner!!! / REEEHAAAAAASSHH

:funny:

If it were me doing it, have him be altered by Lex Luthor like in the cartoon.

Yeah but what I'm getting at is how does Lex know how to create something like that? We take for granted that Lex is a genius and is about as smart as a Kryptonian scientist, but how did he get that way? The things he comes up with are leaps and bounds ahead of modern technology. I can accept Krypton having mind blowing tech, but Earth? Not unless this is the Jetsons. I'd just prefer to see an explanation for that.

A Superman movie WITHOUT WILLIAMS' SCORE IS DEAD ON ARRIVAL.

You want dead on arrival?

Superman Returns. :o

...and last I checked, that movie DID have Williams score.

Look, as epic as the Williams score is, when you're trying to reboot a franchise and character, common sense would dictate that the last thing you want to do is use the same theme.

or...it's totally possible that if you're writing a movie that reintroduces Superman's origins to a general public that barely remembers the original films it's logical to go with a villain that is neither underwhelming (Metallo, Parasite) nor too powerful (Brainiac) for Superman to fight in his first big adventure as a hero...Zod fits that perfectly.

there's gotta be a ridiculous complaint for every one of main casting i suppose. Cavill = not American, Amy = too old, Shannon = villain previously used

I wouldn't have minded a different villain but I am totally on board with Zod as the baddie. Not only does it guarantee an epic superfight but also, Zod establishes an opponent that's much more personal to Clark/Superman simply due to the fact that they are both kryptonians.

glad to see ebert's excited for this news :)

a good review from him will convince a lot of people to see it

I approve of Shannon cast as Zod:up:

I really interested in Zod's role in this film. Will Superman be some kind of search for his heritage and then is confronted by his very on race? Also wondering how Zod even makes it to earth in the first place.

I have a hunch that Zod will not be a all out villain at first. I am guessing Zod will be more like Ducard was to Bruce Wayne in the beginning of Batman Begins.

yes cause using the same character from a previous film in a reboot never works. Just look at Joker.....

Honestly I wouldnt mimd Brainiac, but would prefer a first moviethat stabilizes Supes on earththen if that one does well Brinaiac seems more of a sequel guy to me.

I sense something like this as well.

It's not that it wouldn't work. It's just that people want to see a new villain. Batman went through Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, Riddler, Poison Ivy, Bane, and Mr. Freeze before we got Joker again. I'm not saying all those villains were great, but at least it was different.

Superman has had Lex Luthor, Zod, Lex Luthor knock-off, Richard Pryor, and Nuclear Man.

I'm not sure about this. Is Zod REALLY such an important villain? I mean, he's not like the Joker/Batman thing. When someone says, "Let's make a Batman movie" the next question will always be, "Ok, who plays Joker". But, I don't get the same feeling with the Zod/Superman thing. It's usually Lex or possibly Brainiac.

I just want this film to stand on its own as much as possible. Comparison to Donner is inevitable of course, but if you're going to TRULY reboot Supes, then bring as much new to the movie as you can.

We've seen Zod, and we loved it. Stamp is iconic in the role. It doesn't need to be redone or fixed. If he says, "KNEEL!!" then i'll just roll my eyes. Unoriginality strikes again.

the last movie used Williams' score but it didn't save that movie from under performing. Williams' score was great for last century but it's outdated for a new movie. if they don't use Williams' theme for this movie, we'll see how true your premonition is next year.

not epic enough.

SR wasn't bad. The problem with it was pacing and Singer tried to make a romantic chick flick. If SR had been edited correctly, lose the kid story line and add the tsunami sequence it would have made more money.

My theory on the first film of a Superman movie is Singer and Donners formula of Krypton + Lex + natural disaster causes an alien prescence to come to earth. Meaning we could really see Superman do some kickass work to stop some natural disasters plus confront some terrorism from Intergang in the first film. While something in that first film leads to Brainiac and Metallo entering the picture in the sequel which would lead to doomsday or darkseid in the 3rd film.

Oh well more Zod.

Those of you who want an Earth-based threat for Superman to fight, could you explain to me how a combo of Luthor and Intergang could make for more epic action than Zod?

Superman's rogues gallery isn't as film friendly as Batman's is. hell, Superman HIMSELF isn't as film friendly as Batman is.

I think it would be cool to have Intergang and Zod.
