Barbossa was at an all time high during the maelstroms scenes! I don't know what was better: Barbossa being the one to marry them or the marriage itself!

I finally saw Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, last night and here's my official review.

For let me start of and say, I've never been a Pirates fan. The first one was enjoyable about a "7", it was fun movie and entertaining. The second one was such a disappoitment for me, for which I have repeatedly said, felt like they were killing time before AWE.

The arguement for that by some of the people here was it was "half" a movie but even movies like the Two Towers or Empire delivered, even with a cliffhanger not to mention how long of a movie it was. I gave it a "4".

Now on to AWE and my gripes, some small, some larger:

-Where did Elizabeth just somehow become a great swordswoman? Curse had her as a Governor's daughter, DMC had her go from her wedding, stowing away on a ship and then onto the Pearl and now she can fend off soliders of the ETC and the crewmen of the Dutchman? They should have at least done something like with Eowyn in TT, one little scene that showed she was capable with a sword.

-In DMC, Bootstrap was in possession of all his faculties, what happened between that and AWE that now he's a mindless slave of Jones and the Dutchman?

-The whole subplot of Davy Jones and Calypso. I understand they were trying to do "deepen" the history and character of Jones. Okay sordid love affair which resulted in him becoming the Captain of the Dutchman and she being confined to human form. It was interesting until it went NOWHERE! In the end Calypso's character is nothing more than a plot device to bring about a malestorm.

-Norrington's role. What was the point of DMC if Norrington's role was so minimalized that it felt that it was just a quick tie ending to his character. What they should have done is have Elizabeth's words get to him and him, turning on Beckett in the end.

-One of my biggest gripes was the battle at the end. So you have the entire Pirate Army and the entire army of the ETC and the ONLY 2 ships that fight are the Pearl and the Dutchman? How about a HUGE battle between both sides and like I said earlier Norrington turning a bunch of ships against Beckett?

Overall though, maybe it was my shear disappointment in DMC, but I did like AWE better. My favorite parts:

-Barbossa. First and foremost, that's what DMC lacked. His character brought this movie up and made it enjoyable.

-I did enjoy the "wedding" of course it bugged me that Elizabeth seemed on par with Turner at this point with a sword.

-Actually, the part at the end between Will and his father, I really thought was endearing.

So overall, I gave this movie a "6". It was enjoyable, with spots where it felt like it really dragged and a lot of bad storytelling. But it was definitelly better than DMC and now I can say after watching the second part, it does not make me appreciate DMC more but in actuality makes me think less about it.

I'm not sure what you mean about the Beckett turning on Cutler, there the same person.
And Will taught Elizabeth to use a sword in the two year gap between the 1st and 2nd movie.
I love the wedding part too! Especially the music! XD

I think it should have been, somewhat of a Star Warsesque sea battle between all the ships with Norrington pulling rank and turning on Beckett.

I'm still a bit disappointed that they didn't use all the ships to fight, only two.
Then Beckett had all those guns on both sides of his ship, but didn't do anything, he could have maybe beaten them both at once! But then I wouldn't want that happening to the pirates, but then I didn't want Beckett to die either... lol

In AWE, it was killed because Jones was ordered to. Oh and show it on shore. Just another example of bad storytelling almost like they had to film this at the end because they forgot about it.

Jack should have killed in DMC but died doing so.

Liz tells about how Will has been training her in DMC. A training scene would have been cool.

Remember in DMC when Bootstrap helped Will escape by getting him a boat? That is the reason that Bootstrap Bill is now a slave to Davy.

I'm not saying I think Norrington and the Kraken where done justfully but they are very minor complaints I have with a movie that I enjoyed enough to look over some spots like that I guess

Don't get me wrong, I wish there was more of both, like have Calypso actually turn into something cool, and have a godzilla vs kraken battle in the end too, I dunno what ever. Norrington was too cool in DMC to have meet the fate he did in AWE, but never the less his character just isn't real all that important to the story.

I still love DMC, and AWE made DMC much better than I already thought, also it made me like Curse alot better too. I like the fact that this saga plays out like a novel, very little is left undeveloped with stuff as small as Ragetti's wooden eye becoming a huge trinket in the end, the pirate code, DJ's lockett (which is foreshadowed beautifully in DMC) and Jack's compass, all of those little items play out huge, all the main characters travel on an arc that is completed. And with the less than stellar ending to the spider-man series so far (I liked the movie, but if it is the last one it is a b.s. way to end the series) I think this is the best franchise of this decade so far.

As for people defending writing off Norrington as "not an important piece," well normally that is right. But he had a major role in the climax and conclusion in COTBP. He was one of the keys to the climax of DMC and sets up all the cliffhanger for that movie.

And then his arci s just abruptly ended. Bad writing is bad writing, and that is what it was. He should have affected the plot in a major way, not a small device to get Elizabeth from A to B. Of course in a movie that builds up the pirate lords and Calypso as the only hope for pirtdom and then not deliver at all...this is not surprising.

I agree. The entire final battle should have been fought with ALL the ships not just 2 and Norrington should have pulled rank on Beckett and attacked him, turning the tide.
