Here is a little constructive criticism. Stay away from long lost family members of established characters, especially one's that serve the purpose of replacing a dead character, or filling in as it were. The Swann family for instance...there is no indication that Elizabeth has a brother. The films established Governor Swann as a single father who is raising is only daughter. And Cutler Beckett having a twin? It's a bit contrived and soap opera-ish.

I do like the idea of Barbossa having an illegitimate daughter that thinks he raped her mother. She shouldn't have his last name though, due to several logistical issues.

How about a younger brother to Norrington?
Not long lost or anything, just back home in England. When he learns his brother is dead, he travels to the Caribbean to find the person who killed him, only to be disappointed, and become a pirate.

Seems logical since there was no mention of his family within the film series, but the family has to be of respectable society and the brother would be tied to the navy in some way.

Know those tricks well enough. Do the RP thing on MySpace, when I'm not hammering away at screenplays.

Trick to comes down to staying true to the source material and not going too far off kilter with it. If you have say another Kraken, you're going to pushing it or worse doing a sequel redux.

Review with ****SPOILERS OFF THE PORT SIDE**
I can't believe what the critics are saying, this film is brilliant. I didnt even notice the running time, and as for reports of a convaluted plot, I followed it with ease.
The main characters were all on top form. One small gripe I have, is that Jack is more effective when his odd characteristics are bouncing off other characters, rather than just on his own..when he's a tad wierd.
I thought Elizabeth and Will were nice and a cute couple, nothing spectacular or anything, but not boring. I didnt think I really cared for them much, until that bit near the end, I think you know what I mean, at which point I found myself having a sharp intake of breath, like the rest of the audience.

My only main dissapointment was the lack of closure between Calipso and Davey Jones. All he did was fall in the water then...nothing. I expected something, but it turned out the climatic scene of thier relationship was the one in the brig of the Black Pearl. It was a very touching scene...but not quite enough for me.

The special effects were amazing, but I think everyone agrees on that. The final battle was excellently directed and executed, they deserve some sort of award for that.

Which pretty much sums up this review. I give it 8/10

Thanks for sharing, and I agree I knew the film was 3hrs tops with trailers and you don't even realise how much time has past, thats how good it is, it keeps you gripped in though out, I did like Spidey 3, but it drag on and I did think about the time lol.
 
Yes, I think the critics have been too harsh. It wasn't a cinematic masterpiece but it was very enjoyable.

Plus, if the critics completely 'poo-poo' it then they may be disinclined to make others when actually that isn't a real reflection of the publics opinion.

while the movie itself didn't feel that long. certain scenes went on forever, most notably the never ending maelstrom scene which got the point where it was just noise and pretty things.

come to think of it, that was pretty much the whole movie. Yet I did like some of it, mainly Rush, Nighy and the monkey. The movie needed more Davy Jones, he was a great character. His reaction to the "No one can best the devil line" at the end of DMC had me thinking that he was going to have a great part in number three, but no, he didn't have a chance to do anything notable.

And outside the internet I haven't really heard anything about this movie. It seems like the general public opinion is nothing actually. But maybe that's just me and where I am.
 
critics only like art house type films and oscar winning films, they have blockbusters most of the time, anything the public likes they hate lol they get paid to hate most films lol.
Most of the films I like they give one to three stars or more sometimes lol when I would give them 5 stars lol.
But still it all ends up to your own opinion and no one elses.

Hopefully the box-office figures will speak for themselves and Disney will pay attention to them and not critics.

Critics do tend to look down on 'blockbuster' films because of their filmsy stories or lack of dramatic tension. But what people want is entertainment and I've said it before and I'll say it again. You can get that in AWE, its an old fashioned (minus the CGI!) escapist adventure. Savvy...

People need to remember that critics see about ten times as many movies as normal people in a given month. When you watch that many movies, you view them differently, especially when you have to be objective about it.

the Pirates movies for one have been fun, but part of that reason is because of audience reactions and buzz. It adds more to the movie, critics see the movies before other people and usually in a void of all that. So yes they do sometimes look down on summer blockbusters, but if you ever actually read the reviews you can see things differently. For instance, the Star Wars prequels were better reviewed than Empire and Jedi were back in their day.

Alot of "Ordinary" people actually thumb their noses at Critics and their tastes more so than the other way around.
 
Empire were blasted for giving Attack of the Clones 5 stars!
 
Basically what it comes down to is in the case of big hyped movies, people can and probably should ignore the critics more because they are going to see the movie anyway and need to judge for themselves.

Its the smaller movies that you may not have heard of that really need reviewing.
