Anyone got the DVD yet? What's it like - particularly the sound and picture quality? I hope there's no glitches like that one in DMC where the picture went blocky for a few seconds at one point.

I had that on DMC as well, no such problems with AWE so far, i have watched it about 4 times and only once did it jump and distort and that was on the DVD menu and could have been my player, I havent had the problem since though and everything seems okay.

The more I think about it, the more I agree. While I liked the sequels for what they were, they should've each been stand alone movies like Indiana Jones instead of trying so hard to be something they were not (though the cliff hanger with Barbossa at the end of DMC, I maintain is the best ending since Empire Strikes Back).

Ugh. Best ending Matt? C'mon. :csad:

hehe I was like when I brought hopeing it has nothing like that on it, and it doesn't it plays though fine :D

Yeah, i did enjoy both sequels, AWE more so than DMC, but neither was as good as COTBP, and with, a few different choices at the start, both could have been.

I like the sequels alot however if they would have replaced Will/Liz/connections to COTBP outside of Jack and maybe Barbossa, with like one strong female character to distract Jack I think they would have been stronger

I think them trying to turn it into Star Wars hurt it the most when they should have let it just be Pirates...but I like the sequels so its all good, just could have been better

Possibly, as Empire said, it would have been better giving Jack new characters to bounce off and collide with, but Will and Elizabeth did have a good story in 2 and 3, its just that their story took a lot of the limelight from the likes of Barbossa, and especially, Jack. And considering Jack is the main draw of these movies, it was a bit silly to have not be on screen that much.

BTW has anyone read the 'Pirates Secrets Revealed' section of the leaflet you get with the DVD? It answers some question that fans have had about AWE. 2 of the answers to 2 of the question state that the story of how Will and Elizabeth will still see each other and how Barbossa became a pirate lord, even though he started out as Jack's first mate are yet to be told.

This confuses me because the film-makers, as well as Knightley and Bloom have stated that their chracters wont return as their stories have been told. And the ending of AWE pretty much stated that Jack and Barbossa will be searching for the fountain of youth.

I don't even know if I can find it in me to buy this film. I really liked the first film, and DMC amazed me beyond belief- it was as close to perfect as one can get. This film completely dropped the ball on every level, and an absolute shame, too. To say I had high expectations is an understatement, but I had high expectations for the second one too and that blew me out of the water.

Outside of shooting the monkey out of the cannon, I can't think of one thing in this movie that I liked. While nearly everything else- from the shafting of several great characters like Norrington and Bootstrap, to the completely uncessary and failing reinvention of Jack Sparrow, to the 1000 foot tall woman, this movie blew on every level. I seriously could not comprehend while watching how the same groups of people could put out both films. Weren't these written together?! I was amazed in the second film to see so much interaction with the first, despite it being conceived far later- it fit right in.

This film feel's like a collaboration between a 6 year old and a 15 year old, put into a room with some mountain dew and a rough outline of the second film, and told that the faster they get the story done, the more presents they will get.

It strange, the 2nd one dissapointed me in a lot of ways, yet i really enjoyed the 3rd one, I guess its just down to personal taste.

Either way, i still think the first one is by far the best.

Definately, the first was on purpose. The second was the weaker because it was only a step to get a good third part. I don't see any other purpose. The first one was a fun ride of recreating piracy age!

I'm happy with the third,
Beckett's death was emotionnally powerful with the slo-mo, it was almost iconic

I wouldnt say Becketts death was emotionally powerful, but it was a fitting death for the character. And although i was unhappy with some of the endings of other characters, i'm glad they went in a non-happy, non-conventional way.

And IMO, critics who claim all of the fun was drained out of the franchise in AWE are not watching the same movie.

Yeah I don't know how emotionally powerful Becketts death was that is a little much

I agree though about the critics...like that is one of the reason I thought it was as good as I did was there is a lot of fun in it and great action

I was going to do the comparison of how Pirates followed the Matrix trend, the sequels really trying to be more profound and different than the original movies, and that's where I see a lot of critique about.

However, movies, like Empire, T2, Godfather, branch out differently and have the same success while movies like LOTR keep the same feel throughout.

It just really depends on the direction, story, etc.

In regards to Pirates, maybe if they did something along Indiana Jones, I would have found the sequels better instead of the "filler" DMC was for AWE.

I would have preferred that, or Barbossa becoming the new Davy Jones, and Jack getting the Pearl.

Yeah, Barbossa woulda been great! Sparrow would have worked, too, now that I think of it. He coulda been praised for being the new Captain of the Dutchman, but still had a goal to retrieve the Pearl. Will becoming the new captain just didn't feel right, and I felt like... well I'll continue by replying to this guy...

I enjoyed this movie, but not as much as the first 2. I was also blown away by DMC, I just loved the direction and everything felt like the first movie to me. While this new one had quite a few cheesy elements to it, just like the examples you gave. I felt like they didn't give themselves enough time to write the script and go over it, and just rushed into it to finish the story. The reason I feel they rushed 3 and not 2(assuming they wrote both at the same time) was because 3 really did feel like it was hurried and 2 kinda took it's time, in a sense. Did they really plan to put a 100 ft woman while writing the script for the 2nd movie? I personally don't think so.

I was happy with the movie, I'd give it a 7/10, but I was really hoping for a movie as good as it's first part, DMC.

To be fair, a lot of the time i agree with critics, especially Empire and Total Film, but both claim there was no fun in AWE, which is completely off the mark IMO. In AWE i thought Jack was the most fun he had been in all 3 movies for one.

Yeah, seperate adventures of Jack with new characters would have been better probably, with maybe Will, Liz and Barbossa coming back in the 3rd movie, but in smaller roles.

I enjoyed AWE more than DMC, but i do see people's critisms of it and agree with many of them, the biggest problem with both sequels was IMO, they didnt focus enough on Jack.

In retrospect, my only disappointment was the Locker and Calypso. After DMC I envisioned...a more interesting version of Hell/Purgatory. Regardless I will say that Singapore is the most fun I had at the movies this summer.

With Calypso, it wasn't so much that she just exploded. In fact, the reason she exploded was because, after being bound in a pitiful mortal body for so long, you can't tell me you wouldn't jump for joy at the first chance of freedom and get back to whatever or whoever the hell you were doing prior to your binding.

No, my disappointment was with her form. It was a brave move on their part to make Calypso a giantess Tia Dalma, but I feel something more subtly, like a turquoise blue elemental spirit with a feminine form would've been cooler. Maybe call down some lightning to strike random pirate/EITC ships before letting them fight to see who will be the dominant force on the seas.

I loved the Pirate Lords, the execution, and the base of operations.

Has anyone spotted the trilogy box-set yet? I'm dying to know whether or not I should get it.

The reason I don't like this comparison is that while both series have far superior original movies I think the Pirates sequels at least live up to the billing in terms of action spectacle that the first movie established, and then some

the Matrix had just some mind bending stuff in the first movie, and outside of the car chase in Reloaded it did absolutely nothing really in terms of pushing the limits in terms of action, including the bleek dry Revolutions. where in comparison Pirates at least goes balls to the walls their attempt at making the biggest movies ever, and saved the best fight (of the year maybe even not just for Pirates movies) for last, and while we can critique the way that fight was set up (i.e. having a massive fleet battle too) it still can't be argued at how impressive what we got was.

I think the story told in Pirates too is a good and underrated one too, much better than that of other blockbusters of its caliber (I.e. Spider-man 3, Transformers, the X-men movies etc) not saying those movies are bad (well X-men yes).

That big gun of hers in Singapore sure as hell wasn't strapped to her back, and I never noticed any thigh/leg holsters. How filthy of her. :wow:

I know, i secretly love that part, especially the cheeky little face she pulls afterwards :cwink: .

The locker didnt dissapoint me that much, but, the problem i had with it was, Jack didnt exactly suffer much did he. I think it would have been better if Jack would have seen hallucinations of everyone he ever killed or double crossed, like a skeletal Barbossa, etc, with these hallucinations threatening and scaring him and stabbing him over and over, etc.

It would have been more punishment, and it would have given Jack more reason to think Barbossa and the crew were hallucinations as well.

As for Calypso, i think it would have been better if she had created the Maelstrom AND delivered the chest of cursed Aztec gold from the first movie onto the Black Pearl, so the crew could become temporarily and volunterily immortal. However, Will and Elizabeth would refuse to take a piece after the events of the first movie, and Jack was aboard the Flying Dutchman, so he wouldnt have the chance to take a piece. Then the ending still could have played out the way it did.

Everything else i really liked in the movie though.

Yet, you dislike the Wil/Elizabeth storyline which essentially like one of the main storylines.

And personally, the best 2 Spider-Man or X-Men movies tell a better story than Pirates.
