and I'm actually more interested in this HDR for all PS4 update and how that will work and how much of a difference that would make to games running on the regular PS4.

I'm assuming I'd still need a 4K+HDR tv for that feature. but if that means I'd be able to hook up my updated PS4 to a 4K+HDR tv and benefit from HDR, then why would I need the Pro?
I'm still a bit confused on the HDR issue and how HDR gaming will look. If it has the same impact as HDR does on HDR source films on an HDR TV then this will be much bigger news than the Pro itself lol.

I don't follow the reasoning here:

If the competition already has a 4k player in a gaming console at a low price is there really that much benefit in not including it in your machine. It just means those who want a 4K player and are prepared to use a games console for that feature will buy the one from your competitor and your standalone sales to that market segment (not the high end crowd) will still suffer.

No there isnt as that would stupidly be giving up the market share. The Xbox 1S will now benefit in the same way that the PS2 and PS3 did by being the least expensive way to play the current new form of media

exactly. it doesn't make much sense.

it comes across as greedy, too. Sony wants you to pay twice.

it would be something if even 1080p tv owners could benefit from it.......lol.

guess we'll find out when that update goes live next week ( I think? ).

I wonder if MS will follow suit and do something similar?

Seems that way yeah.

I don't think they expect people to pay twice but the idea of protecting their standalone division with this move would only make sense if noone else includes a 4k player (in a device cheaper than their standalones).

This is part of the issue that is confusing me. With films you need an HDR coded film and an HDR TV. I haven't seen (haven't looked) HDR 1080p TVs as the tech came in with 4K. HDR in gaming might be a little different than it is in film. If it is anything like it thought it will be huge.

Sony also probably wants people to download/stream 4K movies from their PSN store. Just like they want you to subscribe to PS Now to play old games instead of providing BC on the PS4.

I just don't see why the 2 have to be mutually exclusive. Why not let the customer play physical 4K discs if they want and be able to stream 4K content if they choose that? Why does it have to be either or?

A lot of people simply don't have the internet speed or data usage cap needed to properly stream a movie - especially a 4K film.

I was holding off getting the S until Sony officially revealed the Neo/Pro.

after yesterday's meeting, my interest in the S actually increased. and judging by the comments and reactions I've seen online, others felt the same way. I'm sure that's not the effect Sony had intended.....lol.

but that's what you get when your cheaper, less powerful competitor offers a feature you don't.

I am looking to replace and consolidate my devices into one machine as much as possible. The S can offer that - the Pro can not.

I do like the extra power of the Pro. But, I am no longer a hardcore gamer. I value the extra multi media functionality of a console.

This all seems like a Don Mattrick style way of trying to get consumers to do things in the way you want rather than the way they want. I also don't understand how it's different from the PS1, 2 & 3 where Sony were big in CD, DVD and blu-ray hardware outside of their consoles but were happy for their consoles to have that tech and be a driving force in pushing it. Why change that very successful strategy? With all 3 of those consoles, although I used them for games first, I got more value than the asking price just from the media functionality.

exactly!

it's ironic how it seems the roles have reversed from the beginning of this console cycle to now.......lol.

but that's one reason why I've been frustrated and disappointed as a PS4 owner. and one reason why I continue to be attracted to the X1, despite my apparent bad luck with that system........:oldrazz:

but last gen, I ended up using my PS3 more than the 360 for the precise reason that the PS3 was such an awesome multi-media machine.

I mean, the PS4 still can't play Audio cds. We still can't even change our wallpaper to our own images 3 years later.

We can't download our media files directly to the hdd on either the PS4 or X1 ( which means no more custom entrance themes in games like WWE 2K ).

in many ways, both the X1 and PS4 have felt like a step back from last gen in terms of media functionality. And the PS4 more so. At least the X1 has been more proactive in adding features and doing a better job of listening to its customers ( BC, for example ).

At least the X1 can play audio cds. At least the S now offers a 4K Blu-Ray player. At least the X1 has a decent PC-like browser and now with Universal Windows Apps, has the potential to be even more PC like.

and now, it seems Sony is the one pushing towards a digital future, which is what MS caught flack for with their original vision for the X1.

my.....how times have changed........:o

this is an interesting video about the HDR difference that Sony links to in their blog post about the Pro:

[YT]KymaqNGSFY8[/YT]

It's about their 4K HDR tvs and shows simulated images on how much more color and detail the HDR brings out.

but, notice at the end of the video. it says if you don't have HDR content, then the tv enhances the content to near HDR quality. hmmmm........

I know Iceman and I were discussing this topic in the X1 thread after that flimsy article came out showing the HDR difference with games.

we weren't sure if a tv could "upscale" non HDR content to HDR. I found another article that suggested it couldn't - that you'd need HDR content.

but this video says a 4k HDR tv ( or at least Sony's tv ) CAN in fact upscale non HDR content to near HDR.

hmmmm.......I wonder if that applies to other brands like Samsung. and I wonder if this upscaling from the TV applies to games.

If I played games through the regular X1 and through a non-HDR patched PS4, would the Sony tv actually upscale those non HDR games to near HDR?

if so, kind of bypasses the console, doesn't it?

Well I have a Sony and a Samsung 4K HDR TV so will probably be able to check lol. Must say though, even when there is a significant difference in image quality it's not always straightforward to tell exactly how much better one is than the other until you see them side by side.

And that advert as it happens, I'm pretty sure I saw a still of it a long time ago (if not then a very similar image) in the shop I bought my TVs from where it very clearly showed how much different the image was with HDR and without. I also overheard many amazed customers who seemed convinced as soon as they saw it.

yeah. that's why it's hard to convey the benefits of these 4K machines to consumers watching on their laptops and non 4K displays.

what they really need to do is get demo units ( for both the S and Pro ) at retail stores like Best Buy and have those hooked up to 4K HDR tvs to show off the difference.

Yeah.

Has the power consumption of the PS4 Pro been covered here? (310W) For some reason that seems to the big complaint on other sites I've seen alongside the lack of the 4K player. It's funny, I had decided to get the Neo before Scorpio and S were announced and the main drawbacks don't actually bother me as I don't need more 4k players (would only be getting it for games) and my energy bill is already so huge that it probably wouldn't make much difference.

ok got video;'s from both the easy allies ( Formerly the gamer trailers Review crew) and video podcast from EPN.TV About about their reaction's about the ps4 pro though latter talks about others things too.

yeah. if you already have a 4K player, then the Pro's lack of one doesn't really affect you. it's a much bigger issue for those of us who are brand new to 4K or who have yet to upgrade. Having to buy a new console + a new 4K tv is already quite expensive. Then I would have to shell out more money to buy a separate 4K player if I want to watch 4K blu-rays.

and I haven't seen much talk about the power consumption. Have they said if the power supply is internal or external?

I'm more concerned about the noise level and heating issues.

That dumb lightbar was annoying enough. Now the damn thing shines through the top of the touchpad. When I play in the dark I dont want a blue light shinning in my eyes. At least on the old controllers I could put electrical tape over the lightbar. Not sure the touchpad will work if I cover part of it with electrical tape.

boy I am glad I am keeping my PS4 1.0 I like my TB 500P headphones too much to have to buy new ones just cause the PS4 2.0 has no optical jack.

It doesnt have an optical port? Well, thats ****ing stupid.

I mean. it wouldn't matter where the light bar is placed if you could just, y'know, turn the damn thing off. :o

Speaking of which. Has there been anymore useless piece of tech than the light bar?

Has any game seriously made effective use of it?

I heard it was put in for VR. But, if I'm not playing a VR game, why do I need it on?

I can tell my character is seriously injured/in trouble by looking at the screen - y'know, cuz I'm playing the game. I don't need a red ******* light on the controller to tell me that.

and sometimes, the light is green or yellow for no apparent reason. why??

As for why they wont update the software so we can turn it off, pure stubborness. Sony wants us to like that light and see that light and by god its gonna stay on.

I do want a 2nd 4k player eventually, I just don't care on which device it comes. As long as it comes on one device that I'd be happy to get for a different reason then that's enough.

Yeah well a lot of the speculation was that it might be hotter with that power consumption. I didn't really pay much attention to those posts as none of that (or noise) bothers me. You can check out the neogaf PS4 Pro threads if interested.

I like the look of the lightbar but I don't want it on when I play. I guess noone with an aversion to having a light in their eyes was involved in designing it as it is a problem for me. I even cover the Xbox controller's lit up "X" at the top centre when it's feasible to do so.

the only practical use for the lightbar that I've found is that it tells me when the controller is charging in my dock.

other than that, it's practically useless.......lol.

are the analog sticks more durable? Bc outside of battery, thats the only advantage this controller could have. If not, Id stick to the old ones
Sony is just not having a good week. Bethesda has just announced that neither Fallout 4 or Skyrim: Remastered will have mod support on the PS4.

https://bethesda.net/#en/events/game/ps4-mod-update/2016/09/09/199

I'm hearing from a lot of people, and they all seem pissed. Some feel it's time to support Microsoft now.

LMAO at them throwing Sony under the bus
