The Official Stupid Question Thread: Marvel Edition - Part 3

So in continuity the story goes Captain America was lost and thought dead in the English Channel at the end of World War II, but the US goverment still used Cap replacements in his stead until his reappearance in present day (then the 1960s). So my question is, as far as publication goes, is that really what happened? Was there someone else running around as Cap and Bucky in the comics during the 1950s until the Avengers found him, or were the substitutes all retconned in for story purposes?

I think they were retconned away, then re-retconned back in later and said to be other guys pretending to be Cap and Bucky.

Like I think one of the replacements Brubaker's run refers to is John Walker, who then became USAgent. But I'm pretty sure, storywise, he stepped in because Steve Rogers quit or something in the 70s or 80s.

What is MJ up to? Does she appear regularly in Amazing Spiderman or any other book? Has Gwen been mentioned or utilized in any capacity at all this year as the movie debut approached?

She's making some appearances. She still serves as his moral support like when they were married most notably in Spider-Island and Ends of the Earth. She also bought a nightclub.

Gwen hasn't been mentioned or worked into anything to satisfy the movie release.

No, USAgent wasn't Cap during that time. The thing to understand is that Cap and Bucky "dying" was a retconn. Cap and Bucky had adventures in the in the Pacific and in the 50's during the Red Scare. But when Stan decided to dust off Cap and make him an avenger, he retconned in that he had been frozen in ice for years and that Bucky had died. So up until Engleheart took over, all those old adventures were out of continuity, but then he established that they were again, and that the Cap during those time were two others. A dude named Jeffery Mace in the Pacific, and William Burnside, who would become the Grand Director.

Whatever happened to Thor Girl/Tarene?

She accidentally killed a cop during Fear Itself and turned herself in to the authorities.....then got accosted by *****e bags and was saved by Cloud 9....so......either locked up or hanging out with Cloud 9. :o

Thanks. Have MJ and Peter dated at all or have they strictly been just friends? Have either shared any romantic feelings for the other?

Whats Harry up to?

Surprise Gwen hasnt been mentioned. I thought Marvel would want to tie in but creating a story which her legacy is brought up or used in some capacity

They've hung out together but nothing romantically. There's still feelings evident if you ask me. But as a reader, considering their history, it's hard to perceive that there isn't.

Harry has not been seen in this current Big Time era since the beatdown he put on Vin Gonzales in the BND finale. I think he may reappear with ASM 700 around the corner.

I expected nothing regarding Gwen. They did the obligatory movie tie-in story with the Lizard instead.

Slott is pretty adamant about staying away from Gwen returning. He says it would be like resurrecting Uncle Ben- it would totally diminish the drive behind Spiderman. Hard to disagree with that.

No one is saying she has to return from the dead but a flashback story or a current one which has Peter thinking of her doesn’t seem too far off

How did the Punisher kill Captain America in The Punisher Kills The Marvel Universe? Was it a shot to the head?

It's a real shame that apparently nobody has any desire to unite all the Asgardian(ish) heroes for a story or two. I'd love to see a story with Thor, Tarene, Beta Ray Bill, Thunderstrike, Troll, and Valkyrie kicking ass together.

And Moonstar :) I like that her Valkyrie ties pop up every so often. I still need to read the recent Journey into Mystery crossover. Anyone know if it was any good?

Moonstar doesn't count. Moonster never counts. :argh:

The New Mutants/Journey Into Mystery crossover was okay. Not great, not bad.

I stayed away from reading that crossover. One of the charms of Journey Into Mystery for someone that doesn't read a lot of Marvel books was that it was so great standing on its own.

I'd buy the hell outta that. Valkyrie and Thor need more interaction in general.

Haha, yes she does. She was like the best thing about the Dark Avengers crossover

They need to give her back her Valkyrie powers permanently and write her more like this

Yeah, the Dark Avengers/X-Men crossover was one of the few really good things Fraction wrote (and he wrote damn near the whole thing himself, even taking over the Dark Avengers issues from Bendis), and it's one of the better "event" stories in recent years. Mostly everyone was in character, it was short on plot holes, and it was the first good ass-kicking Norman Osborn got during Dark Reign.
