The Official Stupid Question Thread: Marvel Edition - Part 4

Yeah, that sounds more like Ennis, who hates all superheroes except Superman. Ellis writes superheroes all the time, and Planetary contained about a dozen loveletters to the genre.

Hate doesn't seem like the right word to describe it. I don't think Ennis "hates" them. I think he just prefers to not write them.

I used to read The Boys. That dude hates superheroes.

Well, he certainly has an axe to grind with some of the more popular superheroes out there. There are ways to deconstruct the genre while also paying tribute to it, and then there's deconstructing the genre in a way that paints the characters as terrible people. The Boys portrays all superheroes as showboating, drug addicted, sex-crazed sociopaths. Their pastiche of the X-Men basically boiled down to a schoolwide orgy.

Yeah but that was the concept of that series. I never see what you just described in any of his other work. He's remained pretty loyal to the characterization of folks like the Punisher, Daredevil, Wolverine, Spider-Man, ect. At least that's my opinion...

He also wrote one of the best Superman scenes in comics once upon a time.

But yeah, he don't like capes too much.......not that there's anything wrong with that. I can see his point.

It was during his Hitman run. Nice little rooftop convo between Supes and a contract killer with X-Ray Eyes.

Here's a tiny bit:

Wow, that was pretty awesome. I always regretted not ever getting around to reading Hitman but now I feel foolish. Thanks Anubis.

I also heard there was a classic scene where he puked on Batman's boots. :woot:

And used his X-Ray Vision to get a good look at Wonder Woman's business.

Ellis doesn't carry around the same abject hatred of superheroes that Ennis does, but he doesn't like them. It's not malicious, they simply don't interest him. The love letters in Planetary are to superheroes-as-explorers in the Fantastic Four's mold. But what did he do with the actual Fantastic Four of his reality? They're damaged, crazy, a**hole villains. What was his Iron Man run? A savvy political thriller featuring Iron Man as the obsolete model vs. the true bleeding edge of technology. What was his Thor run? He had an overly ambitious human rob the entire Asgardian pantheon of their godhood. He writes a lot of superhero stories, yes, but he tends to turn the established ideas about those superheroes on their heads to make them interesting to himself. You'll probably never see Warren Ellis just crank out a traditional, conservative, well-written story about any superhero because, as he's mentioned in interviews, they're not interesting to him.

On to a new topic. I read that Wolverine had some kids he fathered that were introduced in recent history and he ended up killing every single one of them. What was the deal with that? Did they have the same powers as him? Why did he slaughter them?

I think he means the Mongrels. I remember the story arc where a much of people (whom Daken secretly got together with) decided to try and ruin Wolverine for all the times he killed loved ones and got away with it (like when he's been brainwashed or regressed into a berserker rage and unintentionally kills an innocent). Well this group or secret society hated the fact that they've lost people because of Logan, yet Logan is branded a superhero and a flippin' Avenger at that. One of their acts to screw over Logan was to gather up his illegitmates from all over and have him kill them without him knowing, until it was too late.

Now I can't remember if these bastards were naturally spawned or genetically created or cloned or what, but, yeah, they're dead, and they never really went into their history.

I remember that story, it was dark, tragic and really laid into the consequences of Logan's actions. It hit him so hard that he regressed into being an animal again, but with a twist. He was with a wolf pack, but instead of running around as a badass, he was feral, but emotionally stunted and weak. He was cornered off with the old and sick wolf pack.

Before fully regressing there were the repeat "suicides" he did to feel numb. He'd climb up a mountain and throw himself off- the freedom of the freefall was somewhat comforting, but the massive internal damage he would sustain upon impact would leave him so numb while he healed that he felt free of everything. Responsibility, guilt, memories.

That was part of the reason I came back to the book.

that story actually sounds interesting. Which of Wolverine's 50 books was that in?

That's a big pic of them

It took place in the previous Wolverine solo written by Jason Aaron. It was the series where Wolverine went to hell.

Has AoA/Exiles (non-evil) Sabretooth ever met 616 Wolverine/Sabretooth? What are their opinions towards each other?

AoA Sabertooth met 616 Wolverine during the Dark Angel Saga in Uncanny X-Force. They actually had an interesting moment when Logan gave AoA Creed Ogun's Sword, saying that he vowed to pass it to someone that he met with more honor than him.

The AoA Sabertooth never met the 616 Sabertooth because he was still dead.

Who are the 5-10 most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe?

Jean Grey as the White Phoenix of the Crown? I think she'd rank up there. Not many can hold an entire timeline in their hands and telekinetically eradicate it

In the universe? I'd say the Phoenix Force in general, not just Jean. Then you'd have to include folks strictly from the cosmic end. The Living Tribunal, Eternity, Galactus, The Celestials, Death, ect. The only earthling I know of that could legitimately make the cut is Franklin Richards (at full power).
