The Official Superman Thread - Part 1

I was reading this article, and when I got up to the sketches of his boots, a thought occurred: What if this "Ultimate Superman" is the end result of those Golden Age Superman stories Morrison wanted to tell in his separate continuity? He said in interviews he wanted to tell stories with a younger Clark, back when he was a social crusader and could only leap tall buildings in a single bound. Nothing came of it. And now what are we getting? A younger Clark, with what looks like a callback to his 30s strongman boots and the classic Justice League roster. Also, there's that rumor that his super speed got nerfed, which would make sense if they're going down this road.

I might be completely wrong, but I found it interesting. The Golden Age inspiration could be part of a response to the people who question Superman's relevancy, bringing him closer to his role as a people's champion back when he was very popular.

Theres no rumour about Superman losing his super speed. I actually thought the same thing if this is going to be very Golden Age inspired, but ultimately you still have Krypto and whatnot being there for Superman and these aren't new beginnings for our heroes, yes they are younger but this isn't Superman Secret Origin part 2: We mean it this time. :p

The rumor that Superman's super speed is no longer on par with the Flash is floating around with the same plot point about Bruce being reset to around the Young Justice cartoon time of continuity. It was posted here on the Batman thread. Might not be true, though.

I doubt it's going to be a complete reset to the Golden Age. Morrison likes the Silver Age way too much. I'm just saying all this could be indicative of the tone.

EDIT: No valid sources have said anything about this, you need to give valid sources instead of another forum/chatboard claiming to have heard something. and you forget that Golden Age Superman ran really fast and jumped high instead of flying, but Morrison's young Superman already seemed to know how to fly if we are taking All Star Superman and Morrison's words "this is what a ongoing of Superman from me would be like" 100% seriously and presume no major changes.

So yeah, no loss of speed like i told you. :)

Morrison writing Superman is :awesome: like a possum but if these Superman reboot rumours are true I might not buy it even if Morrison is writing it :csad:

Well there's rumors as well that Superman and Wonder Woman might be an item in this world as well. Personally I pefer they didn't do away with the marriage but at least this time you can't blame it on a deal with the devil but on Barry Allen.

Really Ultimate Superman? What if it was Grant Morrison wanting this? I honestly cannot understand why you rather blame fictional characters instead of the creative teams and the top writers who want to do these things. I mean i know he's a charming, but what if he is the true devil:

To be honest I am fine with most of the changes but I just can't stand Barry Allen. I prefer Wally. However that being said if it wasn't for them doing away the the marriage of Lois and Clark I would be on board for this. I don't want to have to wait another 15 years to see them get married again or maybe not be together at all.

So you acknowledge you're just blaming Barry because you've read more stuff on Wally and would like to keep it that way? :p

It's not the first time anyhow Morrison has doodled with the idea, but also Morrison prefers Wonder Woman and Batman because they're both nobles, while Superman is a farmer and has a boss.
No I read just as much with Barry but I felt there was no need to bring him back because he died a hero in such a great way. If there would have been a time to bring him back it would have been after the relaunch.

So, if Morrison is writing the main Superman title, and Cornell is still writing Action Comics...

Then Superman should come out of this pretty awesome.

You know, I wonder if this means we might be seeing the whole Superman 2000 thing come into fruition as well. I know a lot of that trickled into All Star Superman, but it might be something that Morrison revisits this...whatever you want to call it, relaunch or reboot or whatever.

Well, Morrison was a pretty vital part of that pitch and, like I mentioned, a lot of it trickled into ASS. I don't think they necessarily need all the parties involved for Morrison to try and incorporate it. And it's pretty doubtful either of those will come back to DC anytime soon. Though, there's also Peyer, maybe he could come in

I dont mind the collar... :csad:

Yeah I've never really gotten why people blame fictional characters for the ****** stories told with those characters, instead of the ****** writers/editors producing the ****** stories told with those characters.

I mean except for Jade. Because **** Jade :cmad:

edit: that gif needs to end with a shot of Grant's computer screen showing he's on a message board writing KILL YOURSELF

Dat wacky Morrison

Really hope the rumours about the Superman reboot are all untrue but Morrison writing the character sounds fun

Considering Grant Morrison's age and his more recent runs, I think it's more likely that he grew up on Silver and Bronze Age Superman comics as opposed to the Byrne Era Superman comics. Hell, his modern work such as Final Crisis, All Star Superman, Batman, Batman, Incorporated, etc. are essentially his love letters to the Silver and Bronze Ages.

He still buys into the idea that Superman grew up as a farmboy and is some sort of Jethro character.

Also, while there are a lot of things wrong with post-Crisis Superman, there are a lot of things done very well with the post-Crisis era Superman such as his marriage to Lois Lane, the use of his parents, Clark Kent being the real person, etc.

The marriage I am okay with. The Kents being alive I completely reject, and Clark Kent is not the real person and that was established by Jerry Siegel. Any Superman where Clark is the real person and Superman is the disguise is not a legitimate version of Superman in my eyes. Siegel very explicitly said that Superman was the real person. There WAS a real Clark Kent, but he died when Ma and Pa Kent died. The Clark Kent that is left is an act. This is also part of why the Kents need to die. Them dying kills off the real Clark Kent and just leaves the meek, mild-mannered Clark that walks slumped over and looks down at his feet and is awkward and introverted. This makes Superman the real person and Clark a disguise, but a disguise that Superman needs to cope with his awesome responsibilities. Superman needs Clark Kent like most people need dreams. He's a coping mechanism and a compulsive habit and need of Superman's.

Eh I want Clark to be the real person. Superman is what he does. He wants to help people but he still wants to have a life outside that.

Morrison doesn't write Clark as the real person. It's not that simple with Superman - every aspect of him is put on; the Bravado as Superman, the clumsiness as Clark; apart from when he is alone with Lois or Ma.

I think that even when Clark is the disguise, there still needs to be a real human personality in there somewhere, otherwise he's like Martian Manhunter, an alien who lived a full life as an alien before coming to Earth and assuming a human disguise. He was raised as a human afterall.

I don't believe that Clark is a disguise, nor is Superman. I believe that each represents his core self in the situation that is needed. We all act differently around different people. Aren't you the same person when talking to your parents, children, or coworkers? Yet in each of those situations don't you act differently for whatever purpose is needed?
Clark is not Batman. He does not need an alias, per say. If you took away the secret identity, he would still be the same person regardless if he was wearing the cape or a suit and tie.
