Yeah, it's a done-in-one. One of the best issue of Superman's existence.

Wow, I've never heard anyone call Ultimate Cap "tasteful" before.
In comparison to how trashy and pointless he portrayed characters like Thor, he was. Because he at least had a bit of depth and intelligence in his characterization.

I got the feeling that he left the rest of the characters alone so that Ultimates would have some semblance of an Avengers book to try to draw in their fans. I'm sure he (and Marvel) had some fear that if he drastically changed all of the characters it might alienate his target audience.
Nah, he changed a lot of them drastically - and offensively - too, he just didn't do it nearly as well as Cap.

Don't get me wrong though, I actually like Millar's Ultimates a lot. :o

Oh, "tasteful" for Millar. Okay, yeah, I can see that.

Exactly.

Hm. Now that I think about it, if you took Millar's general plot outline and actually had someone intelligent write it, it could be pretty damn awesome. Have Cap represent America, have Iron Man represent capitalism, have Thor represent the more socialist-leaning Europe, have Banner possibly represent the underclass, or socially obtuse, etc.

I suppose Millar did all of that, but he ****ed the life out of so many of those characters, it barely shows through.

and still, I'm not convinced he did any of that on purpose. Which makes it far less impressive.

Oh, I'm not trying to give him any credit.

I'm just espousing the tremendous storytelling possibilities that are inherent in the concept.

It's that type of depth and complexity that I'd want from an Ultimates comic.

I think any team book lends itself pretty well to that kind of complex storytelling.

It's something that made Morrison's JLA as good as it was. And even the League members don't lend themselves to as straightforward of metaphors as the Ultimates/Avengers members do.

oopsie. sorry to get off topic about ult. Cap, but cause Anubis brought up Kingdom come I had to read this again the other day..

Supes is/ always will be just the man!!
carry on.

I've had this issue for well over a year, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

superman vs. the elite was excellent

best dc animated movie tied with under the red hood

Is Action Comics still taking place in the past because the this last preview makes it seem like it still is.

God, I hope never. Superboy and Superman are awful books.

Oh, that just reminded me, isn't Lobdell supposed to take over Superman? :(

Yup. Which is why I said it was horrible. :o

Man that book is one the coolest! you had it for a year and havent read it? you should check it out. its all about these young gritty dark heroes who Supes has to skool!( i can understand that hehe) i totally dig it!! one of his best stories!

Ok after reading the latest issue which was good by the way I am left wondering why did Superman go back to the t-shirt and jeans if he had the suit? However I like the exchange he had with the Justice League expect for the part where it looked like Batman almost made him cry. Didn't get that but I love how Batman says "That one day their all going to have to go after him." How he still see's Superman as a danger.

do the elite make any decent appearances after action comics 775? tbqh

So the first time Siegel and Shuster used the name Superman was in a short story called The Reign of the Superman which was about a villain with psychic powers. Looks like Morrison is bringing him back at the end of his last issue.

A couple joined the JLA during Kelly's run. Manchester tried to get vengeance on Supes in another great story that ended in him getting a huge effin' hole in his head. :o
