I agree. I've never been much of a Superman fan, but damn, did the story make me interested in him.Lord Blackbolt said:The hell with everyone else. I Loved it too. I been reading Superman for years and that arc got me excited about Supes again.

Hmm...y'know, I might actually drop Superman in favor of this. Busiek's stuff hasn't really impressed me much - and Kubert's definitely better than Pacheco.
yenaled said:I loved Up, Up and Away. Fair enough I liked it a lot more at the start of the arc with some excellent characterisation of Superman and his supporting cast and the feel of the city as a whole (mainly because I don't think anyone else can write Superman like Busiek can) so the big crystal monster was a bit annoying really. But there were some great character scenes in the fight, and the depowered Superman vs. Lex fight was excellent. A thousand times better than how Superman Returns did it.
And I think it shows into Superman and Action which Busiek is doing at the moment which for me are really enjoyable.

The Question said:Lex's characterization was completely off, though. He was basically Snidely Whiplash in a bald cap. No depth at all. Just "mwahaha I'm a *****ebag!"
The Sage said:It's been a while, but I thought Lex was a man who felt betrayed, that the city he build had turned its back on him for an alien. In effect, the city bit the hand that fed it. So his solution was to destroy it, because no one but him can have his city.
The Question said:That's bull****. Lex loves Metropolis. He loves humanity. He wouldn't destroy the one thing he loves more than anything else just because he was arrested for all of the crimes he commited trying to protect it in his own way.
CConn said:I basically took it as Lex having a mental breakdown, which - given the situation - was hardly surprising.
The Sage said:Well if the one thing he loved more than anything turned on him, what's he supposed to do? Walk away and let bygones be bygones? I don't see Lex doing that.
And now he's lost everything he could possibily use to acchive his dream. What would happen to you if that happened? Especially if you were as obsessive as Lex Luthor? It wouldn't just be business as usual. The Question said:But that's the way it's always been. He's never wanted humanity's adoration. He wants to save humanity. Wether we like it or not.
Everyone prefers that - I certainly do - but I am able to enjoy different things - if presented in a way that makes sense...and I think it was in Up, Up and Away. The Question said:Really, I prefer my Lex as a morally questionable anti hero with a messiah complex, Up Up and Away returned him to the days of the irrational supervillain who just likes blowing stuff up and not taking into acount that he'll land in jail for being so obvious about it.

Now that makes some sense.Darthphere said:To furhter prove what Q, and I are saying. In the Public Enemies of the Superman/Batman arc when they both pretty muched kicked Lex out of office, yes he got into the Green and Purple suit but when he was consequently defeated what did he do? Go crazy and start building robots and ****? No, he organized all the world's supervillains he could and formed the Society to take down the heroes. Rational, logical, intelligent plan. Not getting into some kryptonian transformer and firing tanks at people.
His heart was in the right place, though.
