Was Up,up and away any good?

No.

It had a very strong Silver Age feel to it (the Trickster, superintelligent Superman dealing with half of his rouges gallery in the same time, with barely working powers, Lex Luthor being in a "I would've get away with it, if it weren't for that pesky kryptonian" scooby doo villain mode) but not in an All Star Superman level, but on a lot more annoying half assed way that managed to against everything we've learned about certain characters, while limiting the story possibilities of the future.

However I can see how someone liked it. It just didn't have anything that appealed to me in earlier Superstories.

I thought it was Awesome story Arc . :super:

The hell with everyone else. I Loved it too. I been reading Superman for years and that arc got me excited about Supes again.

I loved Up, Up and Away. Fair enough I liked it a lot more at the start of the arc with some excellent characterisation of Superman and his supporting cast and the feel of the city as a whole (mainly because I don't think anyone else can write Superman like Busiek can) so the big crystal monster was a bit annoying really. But there were some great character scenes in the fight, and the depowered Superman vs. Lex fight was excellent. A thousand times better than how Superman Returns did it.

And I think it shows into Superman and Action which Busiek is doing at the moment which for me are really enjoyable.

I agree. I've never been much of a Superman fan, but damn, did the story make me interested in him.

Is it out in trade yet, Up Up and Away?

It comes out the last week of this month.

Hmm...y'know, I might actually drop Superman in favor of this. Busiek's stuff hasn't really impressed me much - and Kubert's definitely better than Pacheco.

Lex's characterization was completely off, though. He was basically Snidely Whiplash in a bald cap. No depth at all. Just "mwahaha I'm a *****ebag!"

Im enjoying Busiek's take on Superman. Its clear to me that Busiek has a good handle on the character. Lets remember, he also wrote Up, Up, and Away. Lets not give Johns all the credit.

Oh yeah, I know. It's not bad or anything, but I certainly hope Action is a bit better.

I've been anticipating this since Donner/Johns were confirmed for the title. It really looks awesome! I can't wait to see the Superman they're going to write and the characters involvled from his mythos. Kubert's art looks awesome and judging by the art, it seems were in for some good action. Can't wait! :super:

It's been a while, but I thought Lex was a man who felt betrayed, that the city he build had turned its back on him for an alien. In effect, the city bit the hand that fed it. So his solution was to destroy it, because no one but him can have his city.

I basically took it as Lex having a mental breakdown, which - given the situation - was hardly surprising.

That's bull****. Lex loves Metropolis. He loves humanity. He wouldn't destroy the one thing he loves more than anything else just because he was arrested for all of the crimes he commited trying to protect it in his own way.

Well if the one thing he loved more than anything turned on him, what's he supposed to do? Walk away and let bygones be bygones? I don't see Lex doing that.

I also saw it that way, in addition to him feeling betrayed.

But that's the way it's always been. He's never wanted humanity's adoration. He wants to save humanity. Wether we like it or not. Really, I prefer my Lex as a morally questionable anti hero with a messiah complex, Up Up and Away returned him to the days of the irrational supervillain who just likes blowing stuff up and not taking into acount that he'll land in jail for being so obvious about it.

And now he's lost everything he could possibily use to acchive his dream. What would happen to you if that happened? Especially if you were as obsessive as Lex Luthor? It wouldn't just be business as usual.

Everyone prefers that - I certainly do - but I am able to enjoy different things - if presented in a way that makes sense...and I think it was in Up, Up and Away.

Yes it would, its happened for the last 20 years.

To furhter prove what Q, and I are saying. In the Public Enemies of the Superman/Batman arc when they both pretty muched kicked Lex out of office, yes he got into the Green and Purple suit but when he was consequently defeated what did he do? Go crazy and start building robots and ****? No, he organized all the world's supervillains he could and formed the Society to take down the heroes. Rational, logical, intelligent plan. Not getting into some kryptonian transformer and firing tanks at people.

Now that makes some sense.

I thought that it was Alex Luthor that built the society, while Lex formed the Secret Six.

Oh ****...he was.

And actually, after losing the presidency, the first thing Luthor did was go into hiding and try to activate Conner's mind control program to, guess what, wreck random havoc.

So Phere was completely wrong. His heart was in the right place, though. :yay:
