It's a bizzare internet geek hiarchy ;) Everyone is trying to out geek each other. (does bet nerd voice) "No I am the true fan of Superman witness my large comic book collection and the S tatooed to my chest Smallville is a basterdization it clearly states in volume 45 page 12"
Somehow we're actually supposed to be impressed by people being geekier....the king of the geeks is still a geek :D

LOL!

This is the funniest thing because it's so true. We geeks always try to outgeek each other, don't we?

Too funny...

Although this isn't directly related to The Fog (the film isn't mentioned at all), I thought it might be good reading:

Horror remakes providing Hollywood with cheap thrills

By BRUCE WESTBROOK
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle
Remakes and big-budget films have long been Hollywood staples, but studios are finding success by embracing the former without the usual cumbersome costs.

The Amityville Horror was last weekend's box office champ, earning $23.3 million and proving that fans are still hungry for remakes of horror, sci-fi and action thrillers, even if they lack star power.

Such "genre" films' spawn may not be prestigious but can be hugely profitable.

Two 2004 horror remakes — The Grudge and Dawn of the Dead — cost a combined $36 million to make, then earned a combined $169 million at the box office.

The previous year, a Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake cost $9 million to produce, then earned $80 million in America and another $26 million abroad.

On the flip side was the sci-fi chiller The Stepford Wives. Boosting its budget with mainstream stars (Nicole Kidman, Glen Close) and lavish but witless special effects, it cost $90 million and earned just $59 million.

Despite Stepford's flop, Hollywood hasn't given up on the big-budget remake. Several comedies and family films cooked up from '60s and '70s recipes are getting pricey new faces this year.

Among these are The Pink Panther, with Steve Martin in Peter Sellers' classic role; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Johnny Depp in Gene Wilder's part from Willie Wonka; The Longest Yard, with Adam Sandler replacing Burt Reynolds; and The Bad News Bears, with Billy Bob Thornton in for Walter Matthau.
TV has also been mined for source material, with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell set to appear in Bewitched.

Such stars are costly: Depp earned $18 million for Charlie and Kidman $17.5 million for Bewitched, but since stars can propel films to jackpots, studios gamble on them.

By contrast, The Grudge had only Sarah Michelle Gellar, while Dawn of the Dead and Texas Chainsaw were star-free.

These genre films' success speaks volumes about young people's renewed hunger for horror.

"If it looks scary, they'll go," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations Co., a Los Angeles firm that tracks the film industry. "When the concept is horror, today's young audience can buy that, whether they know the original or not."

With this youthful orientation, remakes must be marketed "essentially as brand-new product," he said. "With a remake, often they're for films released well before the target audience was born. I bet if I asked a dozen 20-year-olds if The Longest Yard is a remake, they'd probably say no."

But even if they haven't seen the original, a remake can have name-brand cachet. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a pop-culture touchstone. Assault on Precinct 13, whose remake flopped, was not.

Even with name value, last year was unkind to mainstream remakes like Alfie, which cost $60 million and earned $13 million, and The Flight of the Phoenix, which cost $45 million and earned $20 million.

All this may not bode well for the new Pink Panther and Bad News Bears. But the year's action, horror and sci-fi remakes should pay off.

Amityville Horror found life in a franchise that had been dormant since the '80s. Due May 6 is House of Wax, remaking a 1953 Vincent Price film.

The latter should be typical horror redux: done on the cheap but with grisly effectiveness. Shot in Australia, House of Wax has Paris Hilton in a not-so-stellar cast. But a slasher slant should pay dividends in a market cozying up to fear fests.

The year's biggest remakes should be two sci-fi films with scary sides: June 29's The War of the Worlds and Dec. 14's King Kong.

Costing a reported $150 million, the reprise of 1933's King Kong is what Peter Jackson ached to make while helming Hobbit films. As for War of the Worlds, first done in '53, the remake has Steven Spielberg as director and Tom Cruise as star. Game over. The first time they teamed was 2002's Minority Report, a sci-fi success that earned $358 million worldwide.

"It goes in cycles, and '05 seems to be a year of remakes," Dergarabedian said, "While there's a lack of originality, they're a good way for studios to mine their vaults of pre-tested product and can be produced in a way that makes them original. That said, every film has to rise and fall on its own merits."

First of all, JC, you always seem to manage to take a "Tom Welling" statement and flip it around back to Superman Returns. I wasn't even commenting on the movie. I was commenting on Smallville and Welling's enormous contribution to the show.

Secondly, I take the negative things you say because they jump out at me when I read your posts. And you did say a negative thing about Tom: "his acting ability (or lack thereof)," to which I posted my reply. Now, I'm not yelling at you or ranting or screaming. You made a statement, and I made a counter argument. Very simple. No fireworks necessary.

You can't quite figure out why people pounce on you when you say stuff like that, therefore, allow me to enlighten you: You are on a "Tom Welling Thread." Just for your information, it usually means that the thread will be pro-Tom Welling, and if you make a statement like the one above, which is so ludicruous, I have to call you on it. When I do, you got all bent out of shape.

I've got that you don't care for Welling, but please don't make every Welling comment a Superman Returns argument. I'm completely done with that whole thing, and if you read my post, I spoke about his acting in Smallville's first season - never mentioned the movie once.

Umm smallfry, there is nothing for me "figure out"

Had you not seen the big 3, Agent Pat, Jas, and Serene on my tail you wouldn't even have said a thing to me. You think it helps your status by joining in with them, but really it just makes you look like less of an individual. :o

What's the matter, JC, don't like having another on your tail?

You just don't warrant the status, sorry :o Basically you don't know the history of anything going on. You just see there are 3 people talking smack to me, and you join in because you are new and want recognized. Common occurence, you wish to be important and join in on something blind with no knowledge. It's ok little one :p Dunno if I'll bother responding to you much anymore as Agent Pat and the others I mentioned might not like me, but we have a history so I don't mind to keep discussing with them. I see you as nothing of importance though. Don't take offense, just letting you know why your remarks don't mean much to me. I like real opinions, real discussions, not joining in with no knowledge to get people saying "yeah bro you flamed him good, you are on our team now!" :)

Just reading through these posts I gotta say, the gang up on JcDc for having opinions is absurd. Though I don't know the history of it all, from what I see right now there are a few bad apples and he ain't one of em :o

You guys need to respect eachother more :down

It's all about the attitude. I just discuss the topic and let things go when these people get out of hand. I do get offended by Triplet that we discuss stuff outside of Smallville related and become friends... Then because she doesn't like my opinions on the show and movie I get put on ignore and told she's ending our friendship. What a silly thing to end a friendship over. Unless I'm quoting you specifically, I'm talking in general about the subject. It sucks that she didn't see that, I never made a post against the show to upset her. Ah well. I can't apologize for having my own opinion. If you ever read this triplet I hope you are doing well and realize it's a dumb thing to throw a friendship away on :down

It sucks to be interested in a subjects and not have people who just want to discuss it. I mean, it's an open forum and if you are interested in talking about a certain subject they can't act like they own the board and tell you what to say. As for whatever happened with your friend- stop trying to rationalise her actions. If Triplet stopped being your friend and talking to you because she doesn't like your opinions that is some lameness right there. As you said you wuold have quoted her if you meant to direct your comments at her. Not everything i say on a forum is directed at one person so they have to be paranoid or something to think that :o

You know what, it's really phucking late and I'm tired but I have to respond to this.

Look. It's not any of your business what went on between me and Jc, but you musta quoted him with the thought in mind that I'd read what he said since he's still on ignore...

It did the trick. I read what he said.

But let me give you a tip: You should stay out of it next time.

You have no idea about the history here, but as long as Jc wants this laundry airing done out in the open, I'll oblige.

Jc:

It's a lot more complicated than just you bashing Welling, which you do constantly, or my disagreeing with your posts although those are annoying enough. I could probably forgive you that, if that is all that was, like I forgive my sister for her bashing of Democrats and her love of Bush.

But a few weeks back it seemed like time after time I had something good to say about Tom Welling or his acting, you had something contrary to say about it in return.

I felt like you were going out of your way to bash him to get a rise out of me. I don't know why I felt that way, but I did.

And our posts back and forth seemed to have crossed the line from being playful to being testy, for some reason.

Why that happened, I don't know.

Maybe you can't understand my fascination with Welling, especially given what you think about him, or my devotion to the show.

But to go out of your way to constantly bash him even in replies to my posts, challenging me constantly like that, and to bash Wellingites in general (irregardless of whether the comments were directed to me or not). Well, it was too much.

My feelings got hurt. I think understandably so. You constantly disparage the show and Welling and the show's fans. Even mocking other people's opinions of the movie, or anything for that matter, if they disagree with you and their profile or avatar has anything to do with Smallville.

The last straw was when you pointedly taunted me in a post title on a reply I made to some bash somebody made about Tom Welling.

I tried to PM you about that and got no reply.

I am fed up to hearing you say what fools Welling fans are, how stupid or crazy or <fill-in-the-blank> we all are. Or worse that we are not "true" Superman fans because we prefer a TV show over Singer's movie.

How can I read that from you and still accept your word that you weren't talking about me?

How can you not be?

I am probably one of the biggest posters on this forum. I have a lot invested in my Smallville fandom. I do episode reviews for k-site and I've even written a Smallville spec script.

A script you read.

A script which you off-handedly dismissed as a filler episode.

Although I acted casually about it at the time, that seemingly benign comment hurt me more than you can ever know.

But back to the main reason for my disaffection with you, Jc:

When you constantly snipe at Welling fans and Smallville fans, for whatever reason, you are also sniping at me.

If you can't understand how hurt I feel after reading some of the nasty comments you make about Welling fans (a group of which I am a member), then I feel doubly justified in ending our nascent friendship.

You clearly have no idea who I am or what is important to me.

Agent Pat, I'm going to take your advice and ignore him. The fact that I would actually have to explain that he is baiting the people on this board is not worth the time. Triplet nailed it with her comments about him - that's exactly what he does. He constantly makes snide, insulting comments. Then acts like he did nothing wrong. Whatever. I'm ignoring him.

Anyway - great pictures. You have some of the best I've seen. It appears that the next episode, "Blank," is going to be really good, but I'm not sure how I feel about Chloe knowing so much about Clark. Here's the real question: Chloe just thinks that Clark is a meteor freak, if I'm not mistaken. How will she react, as a reporter, when she finds out he's an alien? I mean that's the story of ALL stories for someone like her. Now I don't think she'll betray him, but I wonder about those journalistic instincts.

You're right, the best way to handle attention seekers is to ignore them.

I think Chloe learned that the people she cares about have to come before "the story"..she learned it the hard way. I wonder how (and if) she'll find out he's an alien..maybe an amenesiac Clark comes out and says something like 'my parents are nuts, they think I'm an alien!" lol...I know she must realize now he's not a meteor freak. I really can't wait to find out how this ep goes:)

Back to what's important...I've been wondering how they are going to get Chloe to find out that Clark's not a meteor freak, but an alien. So in Blank is she going to tell him that he's a meteor freak??? I assume his parents will fillm him in, or somehow the Blanking will be reversed before the end of the ep.

Indeed! The LAST thing you do when you register on *any* board for the first time is get in the middle of a pre-existing argument. If you've been surfing the Net for more than a week you KNOW that. It's not a noob mistake. :o

Anyway, topic? Ah yes...

Hey, thanks!! :D

I recently started a thread on another board for the artsy stuff because it's so much fun when you have great subject matter. It also helps put people back on track. Well, most of the time. It hasn't been working recently though. LOL

Well, in Duplicity, she said it would be the story of the century, or something along those lines, for the Daily Planet. BUT, she also regretted starting the Wall of Weird in Pariah when she found out (to her understanding) that her best friend was a "meteor freak."

Based on the spoilers, it looks like
Chloe takes Clark home after he loses his memory. She probably doesn't say much to him about his abilities but knows she's gotta get him home before he does something "super" (LOL) by accident in front of somebody. Looks like his first act is to pull the front door off his house. "Musta been stuck." "Actually, I think it was locked." LOL!! (This episode is gonna be a freakin' RIOT!)

Now I'm *assuming* somewhere in this episode she finds out the real deal, probably from Clark's parents, after she either admits to them directly, or Clark just says something to them later about being a meteor freak. If it's the latter, I'm gonna have to hold my sides from laughing 'cause that will be beyond hilarious to see their reactions. (Have I said recently how much I'm looking forward to this episode?)

I don't think (I hope not, anyway) that Chloe will be "blanked" at the end of the ep, though Lois and Sheriff Adams will HAVE to be. I sort of remember somewhere that the memory loss was short term memory, so maybe they only forget the last few days. Chloe has "known" about Clark longer than that.

Anyhoo, on another topic, with all of the discussion of the size of the Superman logo recently, I've gained a renewed appreciation for SV's take on it. There's an in-depth episode description in the Official Season 2 Companion book on Exodus where they talk a little about the tattoo logo. Of all the iconic images from SV, Clark's chest scar ranks right up there with his being strung up on a "cross" in the pilot episode. I thought folks would find this interesting...

Here's Brian Harding's original design conception for the Kryptonian tattoo:
drawing.jpg

As seen in the episode:
exodus.jpg

Excerpts from the book:
Clark returns to the cellar "and stands up to the voice of his father," Beck continues, "and for his trouble gets knocked up into the upper corner of the cellar and gets a high-temperature tattoo job on his chest."

"Brian Harding did a lot of really nice work on the tattoo," Mat Beck notes. "The idea was to make it look like it's burning out of his chest from the inside. Any effect integrated with human skin is always challenging, because tracking it from one shot to another is always an adventure."

I think they altered the design *slightly* for subsequent episodes. It appears to be a tad larger and more elongated. The phone booth scenes have the scar go over the second row of ab muscles and down about four to six inches north of his navel. Um... can you say SEXY? LOL!! If the SUIT logo looked just like this - but was an \S/ verses an \8/ of course - I'd be as happy as a clam on a mud flat. Damn, does this look GOOD!! *sigh*

Umm.. yeah. SEXY! Isn't it nice to have such distinct enough ab muscles that counting them can actually be used as a descriptor? LOL!

I like the elongated version a bit more. The special effects on that initial burning when it appeared, and the subsequent flarings were soo well done.

If you are suggesting I'm the poster "\Superman/" you are quite wrong and I take offense to your accusation. Do an IP check. I've noticed outside of your group more and more people have been sending me PM's saying they've read through my posts and don't get why there is a group at SV forums who act likes jerks. Not kidding ya.

Oh, hell yeah! But then again, I'll buy anything SV-related that isn't a "toy." I love behind-the-scenes stuff and the companion books are chock full of interesting factoids. Here's one I never picked-up on, and damn, I SHOULD have!

Remember in Duplicity where Pete gets Clark to help him with the "spaceship" he found in the corn field? When they walk up, he hums a tune loudly. Know what he's humming? Hah! The theme from The X-Files. (Mark Snow did the music for both shows.)

Umm.. yeah. SEXY! Isn't it nice to have such distinct enough ab muscles that counting them can actually be used as a descriptor? LOL!
LOL! Good point! Gotta luv that bod, doncha know? ;)

Agreed! I do love how the writers are connecting the dots with this part of the story though. It will be interesting to see how they take the \8/ symbol - which has appeared on EVERYTHING at this point in SV continuity (LOL!) - and explain why Clark changes it to the familiar \S/ logo later.
