Look that comment I made to Pat was light hearted - more to compliment her effort than to put her down. I think she got it.

She did get it, and she even said so. I don't have a gripe with the comment itself, or the original intent.

It's Pickle's attempt to use the comment to mock Pat that annoys me. Why else would he put it under his visually-impaired sized "In Singer We Trust?" And.. even after she let's it be known that she's not exactly happy about his new sig - "Thanks to Pickle, I can't even post an opinion on the Supes' boards anymore because I've now been labeled a "fanatic." ....he apologizes but STILL continues to use it. Why even bother with the hollow apology? An apology means you're sorry for something, and if you're sorry for something you usually don't continue to do the same damn thing.

Whoa whoa... it's okay guys, really. It's not *that* big of a deal. If it were, I would have PM'd Pickle. I took Para's original quote as a compliment; Pickle just ran with it. We're cool. It's over; he's changed his sig. Now everybody have a cookie and a merry holiday. :D

I'm posting from the not-so-warm-not-so-sunny state of Florida. My luck. And compounding the fun, the next week of posts from me (what little there may be) will come to you via my mom's lickity split (NOT!) Compaq Presario running Windows '95 through a dial-up connection. Ouch.

Well, at least there's a Jacuzzi here. ;)

Man... I feel your pain. Nothing like DSL and wireless hookup to my laptop... I can post while watching TV...

I'll never go back to dial up ever again, if I can help it that is. :D

Good point.

Exactly. I'm stirring things up over on the other forum with my new sig btw, but I don't care.

I'm tired of getting bashed for liking Tom and want to remind people that it's far from unanimous that "Routh is Superman!"

I like Welling and the job he has done on Smallville. Having said that I must then say...

You've used a quote from the Wizzard article as your new sig - fair enough. But to be fair to the source material you're quoting, let's review the actual article's quotes so that statements such as "far from unaniomus" are in proper context.

I counted 17 opinions on the casting of Routh as Superman. Thirteen were in line with the casting. Two were what I would term "neutral", Durances ( I wouldn't expect her to be against Tom and she wasn't - although she wasn't negative on Routh) and Azzarello ("... happened to Nick Cage?"). While I totally respect Ross and his love of Supes he was the lone full descenter on the casting. Mewes was more or less pro Tom but then again it wasn't a complete slap agaist Routh. Mews was Mews.

This article would indicate that those in the world closest to Superman are not against Routh's casting, in fact they support the casting decision.

Welling has done a great job in his role. Its time everyone accept that the tourch has been passed.

Okay, it's clear you don't get my reasoning for liking the quote so much...

While it might be somewhat noteworthy that a lot of the people in that article are big shots in the comic world, or are at least well known, it's hardly a scientific poll.

The fact that a lot of these guys are involved in comics in fact makes theirs very skewed viewpoints... That doesn't really help prove your point.

While I was a Tom for Supes fan I'm not against Routh for that reason alone. Yes, I was disappointed Tom didn't get the part, he's the epitome of what an actor should look like to make a credible Superman for me, but I was always very torn on the issue and an unknown was always my second choice.

I knew that Tom's taking the part would very likely mean the early death of Smallville and I love getting my weekly dose of Superman.

I also knew that him taking the part would be very risky for his career. Typecasting could have been a very big problem for him, and I am a big Tom Welling fan so I want him to have a long and very successful career.

Part of me was actually relieved when I heard someone else got the part. It was finally over and Singer had his man.

However, that relief was very short lived.

I think my main problem with whathisname right now is not so much that he isn't Tom Welling, it's that he's looking so damn little like Superman to me.

And it's more than the fact that his eyes aren't blue... he's just not manly enough looking, I guess, and that's what Ross was referring to.

That's why I have the quote in my sig. Ross recognizes that this guy isn't up to the same level that Reeve was and he's got his work cut out for him.

As for your last line: Of course I "accept" that he's got the part, I'm not an idiot nor am I delusional. He's on the payroll of a certain Bryan Singer film that will be lensing down under in about three months. What's not to accept?

I find it odd that my ability or inability to "accept" Routh as the next Superman is something people get so upset about.

What the hell does it mean anyway?

By "accepting" him do you mean that I should like the fact that he's been cast?

If that's what you mean, I suppose on that level I haven't accepted him and, unless he produces a surprisingly good performance, probably never will.

I'm on a dial-up connection right now and have zero patience to wait for the Wizard jpgs to download so I can quote folks accurately, but from what I remember, most of the "experts" fell back on the logic of an unknown being good. I don't disagree with that philosophy; audiences will have an easier time believing an unfamiliar actor is Superman -- assuming of course they don't already have a preconceived notion of what Superman looks like (or will look like LOL), but that's an argument for another thread. ;)

Two were what I would term "neutral", Durances (I wouldn't expect her to be against Tom and she wasn't - although she wasn't negative on Routh) and Azzarello ("... happened to Nick Cage?").

While I totally respect Ross and his love of Supes he was the lone full dissenter on the casting. Mewes was more or less pro Tom but then again it wasn't a complete slap against Routh. Mews was Mews.
It's amazing how fast some fans (not you, Rob - I'm just venting) can and will turn on celebs based on their statements. Case in point Alex Ross. Jason Mews got away with saying Routh looked gay (or something along those lines) because that's just Mews being Mews. Okay, whatever. Doesn't phase me either way. But when Ross says C. Reeve looks like Charles Atlas in comparison, or that he (Ross) is apparently miffed at the Hollywood tendency for "pretty boy" superhero casting, or that he was hoping Welling would land the role, some fans got bent.

Well, if I might channel the mantra directed our way for the last few months, I think people need to get over it. It's just Ross' opinion. It doesn't mean he's a bad artist, or an arrogant SOB, or somebody who doesn't know his arse from his elbow (all statements I've seen posted recently, btw.)

I'm not certain (again, no patience for long downloads tonight), but I think Ross is probably the only other person quoted in that Wizard's article besides Durance who has actually met Welling or had any involvement with SV directly. Naturally he's going to have a little bias in his opinions.

But maybe, just maybe, his opinion is more than a personal preference? He's been painting superheroes for how long? And he does that for a living. (What a country! LOL) He likely has favorite reference models that he works with too, so showing any kind of preference towards Welling is a fairly big compliment, IMHO. As far as the digs towards Routh, well... what do people expect? Look at his recent photos, or even the "official" one released by Warners a few months ago. Maybe Ross isn't impressed? Maybe he isn't as quick to jump on the Singer-can-do-no-wrong bandwagon? Or maybe he just didn't see a need for an unknown because he felt they had the perfect actor right under their noses? Who knows? [shrugs]

This article would indicate that those in the world closest to Superman are not against Routh's casting, in fact they support the casting decision.
Again, I think what folks are most in support of is the fact that an unknown was cast, which I'll reiterate is NOT a bad thing. And seeing as that the focus is on the film and who WAS cast, it doesn't surprise me that folks weren't vocal over who WASN'T cast. Actually, the fact that Ross and Mews even mentioned Welling was pretty astounding. The one reference (that I can remember) to Cage was a joke.

Welling has done a great job in his role.
Agreed, but he's not done yet. ;)

Its time everyone accept that the torch has been passed.
The only thing even closely resembling a passing of the torch was Reeve's appearances on SV and his quotes regarding Welling, IMHO. Tom has *earned* his place in the pantheon of actors to play the icon. Routh has merely been cast in the role. No torch has been passed. Yet. When the film unspools, folks will either accept him or they won't. But right now, based on his acting resume and appearance, he leaves a LOT to be desired for this Superman fan.

Just another amazing response from you Pat. You can argue our opinion any time, any day. You are awesome! (That makes me a Pat ite?)

LOL! Thanks girl! I'm surprised I was actually able to get that message posted; my connection kept dropping out. Oh yeah, dial-up SUX!!! ;)

Anyhoo, here's a few more thoughts for the pyre...

I'm apprehensive over how things seem to be heading. If Warners Features is indeed still vacillating over whether or not to cancel SV because of their freakin' film, SV fans should be concerned. I swear I'm gonna blow a gasket if they actually do cancel it for that reason. Haven't they learned anything from ANGEL? Not that I watched that show, but the talk now is that they're considering doing a film! If that's not a kick in the head, I don't know what is.

Both divisions of Warner Bros. (Features and the Frog) are in agreement to keep the film and the skein as separate as possible. Singer doesn't want Smallville: The Movie, and G&M and even Welling have stated numerous times they want to keep SV a show about Clark Kent before he becomes Superman. Welling's recent quote from Dreamwatch comes to mind. Loosely quoting, "as soon as Clark starts flying around saving people we're doing Superman, and I like Smallville." So, there is NO confusion. There shouldn't be. Ever. I hope Warners realizes this.

As to WHSNBN, he is not Superman yet, as far as I'm concerned. He hasn't earned the title yet. Only when the film unspools can fans call him that. Hypothetically, if he were to be replaced before that time, or the film shelved for whatever reason, he wouldn't have ever been Superman in the public eye. Just sayin. At least Welling is playing one half of the character, and is pretty much already accepted as being the other half, regardless of a lack of colorful duds. ;)

I swear it's true...

My husband's 90 year old grandmother was over today for Christmas. She saw my SV mags sitting on the desk and started RAVING at what a beautiful man "that Clark Kent" is. We went through the magazines, with her pausing to drool over every picture. She told me that she watches every episode... she's a Clana (LOL!) and loved the ep where Lana "took off her clothes in front of Clark and jumped in the pool!" I was ROFL...

Then I told her about the upcoming Supes movie.. and how TW wasn't going to be in it. Her response.."get me an address! I'm going to write somebody!" LOL, again.

Oh, and her funniest comment came after I told her that he was married in real life.. "Really? Damn."

Gotta love 90 year old ladies who prove that you never lose the appreciation for things that are fine and beautiful. ;)

funny as hell :p

Agent Pat good response as usual

Hey guys, hope you all had a great Christmas ! I got the biggest surprise...
My mom got me a Tom Welling t-shirt ! It was the best gift I got, I was genuinly surprised.
remember when I talked about going around with with a TW manip shirt to see how ppl would react to it ? Well my mom heard about this and she worked undercover without I knowing about it and got me a beatiful TW as Superman t-shirt with my 2 favourites manips. It's really great ! Next week I'm going to buy my monthly comics in the country's most elitist store (these guys know everything about characters and comics) and will be interesting to see their reaction to the shirt.

About those quotes: To me most of them were sympathetic to Routh mostly (and you can tell if you read carefully) mostly because of their confidence in Singer rather than their confidence in Routh, which is a little disturbing in my note, since Singer is not the one who's gonna play the role. But what bugged me the most was Jeph Loeb doing the same thing. I guess he was just covering up for his job, if Tom stays in the show, that's good for him, since the SV is the only WB production of a DC comic character that actually is supervised by DC.

Hee! Wow! That's pretty damn cool, Bruce. Does your mom read the boards here? LOL Or have you been telling other people about your nefarious plan? [evil grin]

[It] will be interesting to see their reaction to the shirt.
No doubt! I'm dying to hear what folks have to say. BTW, which manips are on the shirt?

"Sympathetic" to Routh is a funny way of putting it. Freudian slip? [double evil grin] LOL

On another note, proof that it's all in the marketing.
Note the emphasis on family and noticeable lack of Lana & Lex in this billboard...

Just found that interesting. It's also yet another reminder of just how prevalent ads for the show really are.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I want whatever the suits at Warners Features are smoking if they think they're gonna be able to just wipe all thoughts of SV from people's minds 18 months from now. The idea is beyond ludicrous.

That's the ABC Family Channel ad that's been used in a lot of magazines, so yeah, the emphasis is definitely on Clark and his parents. I saw the same billboard just today alongside one of the major Chicago tollways.

Wow Tommy Boy looke very much like Superman in that pic. Whenever you get to see more of his forehead he looks like Supes more and more.

That ad is also a great example of that little syndrome I call "airbrushed plastic face." ;)

Yeah you're gonna get a big kick out of this. she's a big fan of the show as well and especially of Michael Rosenbaumas and I told him what's going on with the movie. She was pretty disapointed. To her Tom IS Superman. I remember were discussing something about the movie and she said "I'm gonna tell you, this guy they got....grrrrr !" I said: "Mom you haven't even seen Routh yet !" she said:- "I don't care, I've already know he's not as good as Tom. Besides I read Agent Pat's posts about the young man and I trust her opinion. She's my kind of gal ! (loool) Those Warner fellows really messed that one out, there's no way they can erase Tom from our minds."
I don't believe she will be lining up for the movie.lol
Anyway the manips she got me were. On the front:

I dont know how long that "in time" will take because MONTHS later, and people are still making a big deal about this casting..
I saw what Ross had to say, and I have to say I agree with him, and to me he's been one of the very best artists to do Superman in the last decade so I take what he said seriously... Just so happens I agree with him on it...
I dont know if Routh will ever be fully accepted, and if he doesnt knock this one out of the park people might turn on him, and the wb, and singer even worse then they are now...
heh you thought the Joel Schumacher lashback was bad wait till the Singer/Routh really starts if this movie stinks...
I pray that the movie it self is good atleast... For everyones sake.

Nothing that we didn't already "know," but nice to see it confirmed nonetheless. SV's fourth season can probably be expected to hit shelves near the end of 2005, just like the 3rd season did this year...

Warner Bros. TV programs coming to DVD
by Zap2it.com

To celebrate half a century of broadcasting over the public airwaves, Warner Bros. Television plans to ring in 2005 by dusting off its archival series and releasing them as DVD collections.

Beginning with James Garner's "Maverick," the network will launch shows never before available on DVD, including Will Smith's "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and the show that launched Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, "Full House."

Other shows expected to be released during the year include "Murphy Brown," "The Jamie Foxx Show," "The Wayans Bros.," "Night Court" and seasons of "Friends," "West Wing" and "Smallville" which have not yet been available.

That's good... I will buy it. Definitely.

One thing I'm hoping for is Tom doing some commentaries this time... hopefully for Transference if for nothing else...

I also hope he's on the gagreel I just got season 3 for Christmas. Once I heard there were so few extras with Tom I wasn't in as big a hurry.
