Yep, I loved Tom on JA... He was so NOT Clark in that. Very sexy and very adult.
I thought about this some more over lunch, and I think his ability to convey pathos is very much tied into his features. Remember this cap?

run2.jpg

It's not really the expression as much as it is an emotion conveyed through his look. What's he thinking? What's he feeling? There's a kind of sadness to the character (in that shot) which is palpable, and it helps to pull the audience in on a very emotional level. Well, I see it that way. Other viewer's mileage may vary.

So, beyond casting for young and sexy, I think Wainwright may have also been seeking actors whose faces had a natural look of empathy that would contribute to the catharsis enjoyed by fans of horror films. If true, he certainly hit the goldmine with Welling.

Well it was exciting to be on every internet site lol, oh yeah I guess Mr Hype himself deleted my thread about welling, cause I dont even see it anymore.

Prolly a good thing, dontcha think? Way too much Wellingite bashing going on 'round here lately, even though being a Wellingite doesn't mean what it used to.

:sigh:

Yes, he did.

In film school I took a class on Film history (best class I've ever taken, btw - what could be more fun than watching a movie every day in class and then talk about it?) Anyway, we talked about pathos a lot.

For that class it was in terms of Charlie Chaplin and other comedy stars of the silents and later. For CC, we talked about why he was so successful as the "little tramp" and yet in his later work where he had moved away from that iconography, he wasn't as succesful...

In his later works he simply didn't convey the same pathos that created an emotional connection with the audience.

The reason why pathos can be conveyed so much better by one actor and not so much by another is hard to quantify, but when an actor has that ability it is like Gold. You're right.

Because its the ability to identify with a character that makes watching that character's journey so much more engaging and meaningful for the audience.

Tom has that ability in spades, which is why Smallville is what it is. If you can't identify with Clark why would you even bother to watch?

Yea I do hate it when it seems like your "forced" or "bashed" to love singer, routh, and the story, well once I see this movie if I think it sucks, well guess what I will say it. If I think Routh couldnt act his way out of a dirty rectum then guess what I will say it. I hate that we all have to treat Singer like he is a god among men.

Argh! It IS gone, isn't it? How annoying! There was a LOT of really good discussion in that thread too, and one post from JackMercy that had I known would be deleted, I would have copied to a text file. That re-heeeeely sux, Muscles!!!

Well, this shouldn't be in the Welling thread but I think you're finally getting why I've turned sour on the whole thing...

If I can't love Smallville and Tom Welling and still be considered a "real" superman fan, then maybe I don't want to belong to that club anyway. And I've been a superman fan for longer than some of these fanboys have been alive. (Prolly more than 25 years...)

That's why Jc's behavior over the last few days made me so mad. He's just encouraging that very brand of thinking over on the film forum.

I've seen more Welling fan bashing over there the last couple of days then I have in the last couple of months, and it's ugly personal stuff they're posting. How deluded we are, how stupid we are...

:sigh:

Too much negativity in the world already....

It angers me to no end. If they didn't want the bashing to continue, they should have just closed the thread - like they do with every other thread where things get out of control. That thread wasn't spam, and unlike other threads that are still here, it wasn't meant to bash or antagonize (even if there was some negative posts posted in it.) If they want to stop the bashing, they need to warn and/or BAN the users responsible for creating the problems. And for Pete's sake, make it stick this time. Please?

*sigh* is right. I'm sticking to this forum (and DTS TW forums) from NOW ON! I haven't been out of those places for the last two days, and seeing what you just wrote, it's probably a good thing. I don't need to defend my reasoning for liking a certain thing. Fans are such because they simply just enjoy whatever it is that they're a fan of. But that doesn't mean we worship *everything* about the product, topic or person - nor should we.

Triplet, the only thinking I'm encouraging is to give a chance to Singer and Routh. I've been feeling that lately there has been a lot of negative propaganda going on so I've probably crossed the line at some point. I will back off and let things calm down over here for you, and only for you out of respect. If you feel I'm starting crap, send me a PM and give me a chance to stop being an ass, or at least stop me from further alienating people. It's not my intent to run people out of here and I hope you as well as everyone else believes me. I tend to enjoy debating opposing view points and I seem to have a problem telling when I've alienated others in the process :-/ It's not until I've seen a big bang effect that I'm like "Holy sh** I think I've done some wrongs in this situation to make things worse"

One more thing I would like people to understand is that I've been following this thing since the Burton Nick Cage days. After Ratner not giving me much confidence, then McG giving me less confidence... When Singer was announced I was ready to back his decisions since I'm familiar with his filmwork and know what a Superman fan he's always been. I guess my need for a new movie in this era, and a more epic superhero film at that seemed filled when Singer got the gig. FINALLY a reason to hope for a good Supes movie. I suppose following the history of this film project so closely has made me extra defensive to those that want to act as Debbie Downer :o

I've seen a lot of speculation about SV's success, and what it is about the show that seems to reach people. I guess everybody has their favorite "thing" (some people watch it just for Lana LOL). But every time I see an interview with one of the producers, writers, or supporting cast, they all praise Tom and often site his growth as an actor and appeal to work with. As a fan of both the show and its star, that's really cool - and super - to see! :D

Thanks, I appreciate that but the point is that you're still not getting is that why does it matter that we're negative on the film?

I'm waiting to see what happens before I finally make up my mind and a lot of other people feel the same way...

Why not give us space and let time heal the pretty nasty wounds that have sprung up?

I agree with Pat, I don't think I'll be going back over the film forum ever again.

It's been too nasty over there for too long and it's clear any Welling fan can't also be a Superman fan to most of them, so why bother even trying to have a discussion about it? Invariably anything I say that is even remotely negative about the film is viewed in terms of who's in my avatar and not what I've actually said.

"Because you want Welling you <fill in the blank>!"

Hell, I was relieved when Routh got it. Finally, I thought "The casting wars will finally be at an end!" How naive I was being...

I'm not sure the exact reasons for this split between the two camps, only a few people can honestly say that they wholeheartedly like both franchises I think, but it's been six months already.

Why keep it up?

Why bother trying to persuade people who are tired of being told the objects of their affection makes them unworthy to be TRUE Superman fans?

Whatever the hell that means...

I think TW4Supes and The Hulk both made good points: You haven't seemed to want to debate.

What's worse is that you've gone a jag over the last few days and have bashed Welling fans, not just Welling's suitability for the role.

That is crossing the line and, unfortunately, has encouraged others to to do the same.

I love coming here more than any other Smallville forum because here we can usually have discussions on the merits of Tom and Smallville and various other related topics without the shipper influence seen on other sites. I don't really care about the ships as long as TPTB keep telling engaging stories on Superman's teen years...

Here the conversation is tons more adult and usually is a lot of fun, but lately not so much. You have to admit that you contributed to that, whether you meant to or not.

I've had a lousy week at work and let that affect my demeanor here, for that I'm sorry if I've pissed people off.

I'll try to be better about that later...

Nah your fine, and I don't want you to feel you are coming into a train wreck everytime you see I've made a post. Things should calm down, I'm leaving for England on Friday so you all won't have to put up with me for a good 9-10 days ;)

I too have seen this behavior.

"Because you want Welling you <fill in the blank>!"
"...are not worthy of posting here." That's how I've felt at times.

Frustrating, init?

 I could care less who is paired with who. When it comes to Clark, he can date whomever his little heart desires. It's ALL good!! :D

Bravo!!!

All I ever wanted was a place that I could get together with like-opined people. We don't have to agree on everything, and in point of fact, we don't. There's nothing wrong with counter point and expressing contrary opinions - it's fun. But not ALL THE TIME. People on-line *usually* congregate in places where their "fanships" are more uniform, and THAT is why I come here specifically.

Have a good time...

Anyway to get the old thread back pat? Or should we make another one titled 1 Final Chance For Welling?

They deleted it for a reason - even if we don't agree with the reason. Don't recreate it, Muscles. That's just asking for trouble, IMHO.

Moving on....

Okay, who here thinks SV is Ms. Sandillo's (see below) first foray into Superman mythos? She wrote a really nice article, but it's almost like she has no clue what the outcome is going to be. Kind of funny...

WB's 'Smallville' still 'super' viewing
Tuesday, March 01, 2005

By ARIANA SANDILLO

West Springfield Middle watch a lot of television. Some shows I get into, but some shows I find no interest in. Recently I've been watching a show called Smallville (WB, Wednesday, 8 p.m.) and I've grown to love it!

Smallville is based on a modern-day version of Superman. A teenager named Clark Kent (Tom Welling) has super powers that no man can posses. Clark is from a planet called Krypton and was transported here on the day of the major meteor shower in Smallville that left the unsuspecting citizens in shock. With his powers Clark learns that he can help people, that becomes his destiny.

Clark is an adopted child. A couple named Jonathan (John Schneider) and Martha (Annette O'Toole) Kent found him and were so happy because they were unable to have kids of their own. Although Clark's biological father, Jor-el, sent him to Earth to rule, the Kents raised Clark to be a good, caring young adult.

All throughout Clark's journey he is accompanied by friends and family. His friends Lana Lang (Kristen Kreuk), Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) and Pete Ross, (Sam Jones the 3rd) help him along the way. After an accident involving a Porsche and Clark, Clark and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) become best friends. When Lex's father Lionel Luthor (John Glover) tries to solve the mystery of Clark Kent, Lex and Clark become even closer friends when they try to bring down Lionel.

Clark has an enduring love for Lana, and has to deal with high school and peer pressure to know exactly where he stands in this world.

In my opinion Smallville is a five star show. It's fun, exciting and will leave you wanting to know what's next!

Glad she's a fan, but she needs to do some brushing up.

Kinda blows Singer's idea right out of the water that EVERYONE knows the basic history of Superman, don't it?

It does!

My first introduction to Supes was with the George Reeves' TV show. As a kid, it never really "clicked" with me (despite the opening monologue over the credits) that he was an ALIEN. Yeah, I'm weird - and wasn't too swift as a kid, I guess LOL. I noticed the weird stuff though, like Reeves' "Clark" had more than one Superman costume that he kept on hangers in his closet. Hee!

When the Donner pic came out, a whole new world was revealed. I had no clue who Lex Luthor was, didn't know that Superman was basically immortal, and I chuckled at how goofy Clark was (compared to G. Reeves' version.)

I'll skip over Superboy and L&C for brevity LOL.

After watching SV for four years (not to mention reading the comics - which help a GREAT DEAL, I'll admit), I've got a whole new appreciation for this alien who "came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men." I almost envy the newbies who are just *now* discovering and enjoying the myth through SV. That's pretty dern cool, if ya think about it. :)
