BvS The Official Zack Snyder Directs Everything Thread - Part 2

The opening credits were beyond outstanding. His opening to Watchmen was damn good as well. If only you could just hire him to direct the first 10-15 minutes of a film and let someone else take over.

The opening credits to BvS were a negative of the movie. They're bad storytelling, both in terms of effectively communicating, and what they're trying to communicate.

The way they were shot, with the camera switching direction every 3 seconds maximum, was awful as well.

No way. Not a single person I know disliked the beginning. Not my friends who liked the film. Or the ones who thought it was okay, or the ones who flat out thought it was a broken mess of a film. Your in the minority here.

From a narrative (setting up 'Martha') and visual point of view the opening is well done.
It just wasn't needed. They should have opening with the battle of Metropolis.

I thought the opening felt rather overdone, honestly. Fine on paper perhaps, but how it was handled with all the slow motion wasn't really a preference of mine. Plus the whole bats thing just didn't click with me. I think a better opening would have been having the credits roll, then jumping right into the Superman v Zod battle.

I really thought he had the killer blow Martha's head off with that gun angle.

Its probably my least favorite version of the Waynes murder. I just prefer the real and the raw intensity approach. Plus it really is unneeded. I saw someone say Jason Todd's death would have been better and i agree.

Snyder isn't much of a storyteller. He's, a music video director basically. He specializes in pretty visualize/aesthetics, and what looks "cool." And, as someone who like Watchmen and 300, he does fine when he has the story already mapped out for him. But when he has to come up with one of his own, or interpret someone else's brand-new story as written on the page, he really seems to struggle. He also struggles with pacing and plot structure as well.

Super floating Bat Jesus didn't do it for you then?

When I watch Snyder movies there are always moments in the movie I love but don't ever love the movie as a whole. The only movie of Snyder's I love is Dawn of the Dead and you would never know it was a Snyder movie until you read the credits. Oh, an it was his first, so he has picked up some seriously bad habits since.

It's hilarious that he ditched the slo-mo in MOS (which I appreciated BTW) only to double-down on it here.

I recall there being lots of complaints about him ditching the slow-mo in MoS. I personally liked it. It made everything Superman did just that much more awe inspiring.

Yep. It was like a music video that played before a movie. And I loved the opening credits for Watchmen. Not just in style but the way they portrayed the characters was the only part of the movie that got it right. With this movie? It was just unnecessary.

I didn't like MoS but I appreciate that Snyder toned down his style for it.

It works for some movies but it wouldn't have for Supes

Sure looks like it. Or in the throat.

Like I said in my review, going into it I was thinking it might be a more "serious" and "dark" version of the Schumacher films. That opening (why I laugh when I hear the music while listening to the score), the bat floating, and knowledge of the upcoming Desert Storm Batman, this had to be a pretty goofy film. It was, but very boring.

I now really think Snyder just likes certain moments from comics and doesn't care/remember/understand why those moments are/were important/popular/etc. He just wanted some "cool" moments. I don't even remember the moment where Batman punched Superman like the comic and I'm surprised he didn't try to work in that "Man who beat you" line too.

And any explanation he gives in interviews for both films just leave me more confused.

He's turned a lot of viewers into slomophobes.

I thought it was redundant, because we had just seen Nolan do this same exact scene not very long ago in 2005 (and better). I also liked Burton's version better. Burton focused on the horror and dread, Nolan on the randomness and sudden pointless brutality. Snyder was doing what he always does: showing off fancy slow motion and elaborate close-ups followed by CGI effects.

Quite frankly, that was the first moment where I was watching the movie and went "oh dear" since none of the emotion was there. Then the Man of Steel ending happened from Batman's POV, and I got back into the movie. At least until the brief introduction of Jimmy Olsen and then it was all downhill from there.

It seems crazy to me they keep banking on Snyder. MoS got a mixed reception at best. Then BvS got even worse reviews and word of mouth. And now we expect Justice League to be different when it's the same guy at the helm?
