Since we're stuck with Trump for the next 4 years, like it or not, how about we try to look for any genuine positive things that could come out of his term as POTUS?

This is not a thread for people saying "nothing" can come out of it, or making ridiculous suggestions, but trying to make the best of a bad situation and trying to find some ray of hope.

Bigot groups after years of hiding come out of the shadows, so we know who they are and we can keep better tabs on them so we can arrest them all and lock them away in solitary confinement the second any of them step out of line.

It is and isn't ridiculous, thinking their man Trump got in mostly because of them they're not going to be as covert as they once were making it much easier for them to be tagged and kept track of without needing their ranks to be infiltrated like they currently are.

Republicans now control all branches of government. Assuming they don't drive the country into a ditch before 4 years, hopefully people will finally see they only care about the 1% and discriminating against non-white males.

I'd like to think if he does as little damage as possible to our economy and we avoid a war in his first term but he says or does something so reprehensible that Democrats and Republicans completely disown him and the Democratic nominee crushes him in 2020 that would be basically a best case scenario. No matter what happens though this just erased the entire Obama presidency. The next Democratic president is going to have to start from scratch on pretty much everything.

Maybe only on policy matters. He's definitely not erased the legacy and historicity of having the first black president. I don't know if Trump will get rid of everything completely though as he suggested or might just leave certain things in place that might've worked. After all, it is more trouble to reinvent the wheel than to just modify certain existing things.

That's what's also tragic. Obama guided this country through one of the greatest recessions. That is no easy feat, especially when you have a Congress unwilling to work with you for six of those years. And now he has to hand off the Presidency to a man who doesn't even think he was born in the United States.

There is no ray of hope. I am not being cute. Every good thing Obama did will be undone. If you give a damn about women's rights, gay rights, minority rights or the working poor prepare for four very rough years. He may even be able to overturn Roe v Wade if he gets to pack the Supreme Court, which is not implausible. Two justices are now in their 80s. Focus on 2018.

I thought this was supposed to be the lesson of Bush. American citizens have short memories.

Also his rhetoric and policies are sure to drive up more hatred and violence against muslims and immigrants.

We're also forgetting that a lot of Republicans don't like Trump (even the ones that didn't break for Hillary), and I could see them teaming with the Democratic minority to keep his power in check. I really can't see all the GOP falling back in line after the victory.

And don't forget the ACLU. Any of his unconstitutional goals will be challenged in court, and the smaller courts regularly handle that sort of thing unless it gets referred to the SC. Most of the federal judges below the Supremes were appointed by Clinton and Obama. So there's that going for it.

REALITY: Bigots, KKK, and Nazis voted for Trump.

FALSE: All Republicans are bigots.

Seriously guys, this whole "us and them" childish nonsense you throw around is partly what costed us to have Trump as President. Grow up. A lot of Republicans didn't vote for Trump. The two aren't synonymous.

I am equally ashamed of both the bigots who voted him in and the bigots lumping all Republicans into one category.

At the end of day, if it helps keep them in office, they will fall in line. Sure, they may put on a show like Susan Collins about wavering but ultimately they will vote along sorry lines.

Grow the hell up, dude. You're partly to blame for this, that's readily easy to see from your post. I know age old Republicans, a lot spewing just as much hate about Trump as everyone else. This whole "us and them" is just going to continue this thing moving in an endless circle. It's also why we can hardly get any work done in this country even when we don't have Trump in the oval office because it becomes a dick measuring contest rather than actually getting work done. I'm sure most independents could see this whole "us versus them" crap was going to blow up in our faces sooner or later, just never knew it would be this soon.

This. I know Republicans who don't support Trump at all and were even in heated debates on Facebook with other Republicans about why they shouldn't vote for Trump.

Trump won't get sht done, and not much will change, that or he'll somehow get impeached, are pretty much the only good things that I can see happening during his term, and even then Mike Pence will be running the white house who is arguably worse.

umm.....comedy gold from the comedians? *shrugs* I got nothing

I had a heated discussion with a former co-worker on FB today about how unfit Trump was as President -- the guy is a very right-wing guy from Brooklyn, who has only a high school education.

I tried to explain it calmly and rationally, that I knew sexual assault victims and that Trump winning the election was a slap in their face and others. That basically if you're a sexual predator, you can be President and get away with it. He kept brushing it aside with the claim "he's innocent until proven guilty" and kept haranguing on about Hillary being guilty of criminal charges and how she got away with it.

I had to excuse myself so I didn't burn any bridges, but there's just no penetrating these Trump supporters' minds.

I will say, it will effect me, but if Trump brings this country to its knees, none of these idiot supporters will have a scapegoat. They're running all three branches now.

Having seen how much they worked with Obama to at least compromise, I'd say I'm right.

Positives that I can think of: a possible return to detente with russia/an end to the expansion/escalation of our proxy wars with them

How many of those are confident that they can win a primary against a Tea Partier? See, it isn't the Democrats that worry incumbent Republicans, its the fear of a primary contest. Which is why the GOP when full obstructionist.

Sorry to ask, but how old are you? You just sound like you have very little life experience in these terms and that this is one of your first elections. A lot of us on here can tell you we know proud Republicans who voted for Obama - BOTH TERMS. Hell, my Mom's a democrat and she voted for Bush in the first election. What was she thinking voting for the American Idiot? I dunno, but she did. Republicans vote for Democratic presidents and Democrats vote for Republican presidents, this is nothing new. But this stupid childish nonsense of you're either one or the other is frankly moronic and part of what has led us to this point. "Us and them" the three words that have been destroying humanity since the beginning of time.

Again. Black or white. I pity those who see things either or. The world isn't that narrow.

When I see absolutes, I can't help but think of:

And this goes for everything. I got lucky enough, or cursed enough, to basically be in the dead middle of many many things sociologically. As that guy, I've seen how ridiculous people get with absolutes when they can get a lot more done on both sides through working together and through more people acknowledging that the world isn't black or white.

And that will definitely pave the way for an upset in 2018 and 2020. That is if the Democratic Party can get its members to vote every two years, instead of four.

Pretty much nailed it here. Congress has been blaming Obama for things not getting done, or for every horrible thing that has happened the last eight years. Anything that happens now is on them good or bad. It's unfortunate Democrats have no real paths for a huge upset in 2018 because of the incumbents that are up for reelection but I still have faith that 2020 will be a landslide election if Trump blows it and Democrats nominate the right candidate. Republicans now have likely four years to prove that the party they have been since 2008 can run a competent government. They blow it and they will lose everything in four years.
