The Punisher The Punisher - General Discussion Thread

It's weird how I like Billy's mask more than his actual face.

I did read some rumors it's really bad too :/ Hopefully it's not true

Jigsaw still look like he was attacked by a big cat or something :lmao:

Like a small cat. A big cat would've done more damage.

They've basically given him the Jack Kirby Doctor Doom syndrome. His face wasn't damaged beyond all repair, but his mind is a mess because of what happened and it's mostly psychological. The minor scars he has have shattered his vanity and narcissism.

Don't really care for this change but whatever. The point of Frank's punishment was he was supposed to live with the shame of messing up his good looks he had so much pride over.

It would be better if he just wore that mask if they couldnt do better job with the scars

To be fair for the above referenced tweet, fans gave Punisher season 1 very good reviews, but it didn't score that well with critics (66%). I mean, that is an okay score, but hardly unanimous praise. I can see it being similar for season 2. But not an issue for me, as I loved season 1.

Yeah, Season One had a fairly mixed reaction, which is a shame because I honestly felt it was much stronger than some of the other shows (it's easily better than Jessica Jones S2, The Defenders, and probably both seasons of Luke Cage, all of which scored higher on RT). Though it is a bit worrying that someone who loved S1 didn't like S2.

For me, Punisher Season 1 is only behind DD S1 & 3 and JJ S1 in quality for the Netflix shows. I loved season 1.

Yeah. I'd rank them this way:

DD S3
Punisher S1
DD S1
Jessica Jones S1
DD S2
LC S1
LC S2
The Defenders
JJ S2
Iron Fist S1

Never bothered to sit through IF S2.

Man, on a purely aesthetic level, Netflix sure likes to dial it down on these things - if its not the lack of a heroes signature costume (DD Season 3, Punisher Season 1, ALL Seasons of IF), its a villains key signature disfigurement. I wasnt expecting P: War Zone Jigsaw, but as someone who grew up with Zeck's Jigsaw, I am disappointed with the level of superficiality.

As I say, I'm talking about aesthetic's. They very well may nail the characterisation and I loved Barnes' Billy in Season 1.

If there is one thing that did constantly annoy me about these shows it's the clear avoidance of anything remotely comic booky or using more comic book style iconography. Everything in the Netflis shows tend to favor the gritty realistic style.

Which makes it all the weirder when we see things like Whizzer and his awfully rendered speedster powers. Like of all the things to show, we'll see an introverted geeky version of Whizzer, and his speed powers look really awkward.

LOL, he decorated the mask himself at his therapist's suggestion. You see, his mind is the jigsaw, not his face!

I'd also argue season one works really well as a cohesive whole but the episodes critics got standing alone weren't necessarily great. The opening scene of the first episode aside, the show is very slow and takes a while to get going. Unlike some of the other shows, I think the slowness works in its favor in setting the mood with a very effective story, but, without knowing the ending, I can see not liking it.

Yea the critics only got to base their opinions off of the first 6 six episodes if i remember correctly....the show took longer than that to really get going...on a side note man I love Jon Bernthal as the Punisher I hope this isnt the end.

Hmm. I didn’t know that. Doesn’t seem right that they write up reviews without watching the whole thing. Does that happen with other shows too?

It was the same with Iron Fist S1.

It happens with most shows.

First off, keep in mind that most shows don't release an entire season at once so the review is likely reviewing only the first episode. Second, even those that do don't release the entire season to review because they want to avoid leaks and things like that. They release these partial seasons in advance because they want the reviewer to have a review out the day the season gets released.

Personally, I think (a) the review needs to make it clear they're only reviewing a partial season, (b) review aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes should actually make that clear as well and only aggregate apples to apples (e.g., if it's the first six episodes, the title should be "Punisher Season Two (first six episodes) and, if another review covers all 13, don't put the two together), and (c) the reviewer should go back and watch the remaining episodes and write a separate review if things change for better or for worse.

Ah yes, that makes perfect sense of course. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

And I definitely agree on your 2nd paragraph about how the reviews should be labelled/qualified.

I'm half way through rewatching season 1 now, and I just can't get past how emotional Frank is. The comics I've read very rarely have him losing his temper, but Bernthal is always shouting or on the verge of tears. Hope he's more in control of himself in season 2. Oh, and have him wear the skull all the time!

IMHO, wouldn't mind if they dial back some of the grunting caveman rage for Jon Bernthal's Frank in S2.

I dunno about Bernthal. They should keep him if they're going to continue with Cox as Daredevil etc. but I'd like to see Jon Hamm as the Punisher. He already looks the part, and Don Draper is a great jumping off point temperament-wise.

I highly doubt they'll scale back his anger or grunting. That's arguably why he was hired in the first place.

After this show gets cancelled, I don't anticipate seeing frank again in the live action space in official capacity for another decade or so.
