The Punisher Pushed Back - December 5th

The first movie was not poorly received. The only reason it got screwed at box office was because they opened it next to Kill Bill 2. DVD sales for the 2004 Punisher film were more than enough for the film to turn a profit.

When the trailer hits, this movie will be hyped, and you will eat your words.

finally, somebody else chimes in with something sensible.

:woot:

Yeah, Kill Bill is the only reason. :whatever:

And the 2004 Punisher was poorly received in more ways than one. Aside from the weak box office numbers (it was released and basically disappeared from all walks of life very quickly), it's critical reception was also poor. Sure, it did well on DVD, but a lot of ****ty movies are big sellers on DVD. Who do you think buys all the direct-to-video movies that are made?

Luckily this movie isn't a sequel to anything. And like Balthus Dire said, it did very well in DVD sales.

So what? Audiences aren't going to know the difference and will see it as a sequel.

You guys aren't seeing the writing on the wall. This isn't a big event, big budget holiday movie. There is no big star or names attached to this film. Along with that and the subject matter does not bode well for its holiday time performance.

You can nitpick all you want, sequel, re-imagining, remake, whatever you want to call it, the first movie was poorly received. It underperformed at the BO. If that wasn't the case there would already be a TRUE SEQUEL that you were all dying and expecting to see not too long ago.

December is burial for this movie, plain and simple.

I really don't care if it makes no money, I just hope Lexi delivers a balls to the walls Punisher film that the character deserves.

i agree; but if it makes money then thats even better -- fact is december was a bad time. summer, even releasing it in august would be way better. release it against something smaller... it could make a lot of bank if it was advertised the right way

It wasn't the unsuccess that kept a 'true sequel' from happening. It was Tom Jane disliking the script and not believing in his character anymore, among other reasons.

exactly, the sequel was going to happen... the box office obviously wasn't that bad because lionsgate was going ahead with another punisher film. it was actually going to be a direct sequel, but when the script failed to meet expectations and the lead actor and director left the film, the studio went a new route and decided to do a reboot.

actually, he did say "among other reasons."

id love a true sequel, but at the point of how long it took for the flick to hppen ill take a sequel, reboot, spinOff, anything at this point... im just happy cuz it seems lexi is nailing it

My understanding is it was the script, not that he didn't 'believe in the character anymore.' He probably wanted another script overhaul and Lionsgate had to get the movie going by a certain date, or the rights were gonna revert to Marvel. Plus the writers strike was looming and that put a stop any re-writes during production.

According to Bradstreet it was apparently a tough choice for him. Do a movie he fully didn't believe in or simply walk away.

There really hasn't been any proof of this really. Outside of some pretty meh pictures and saying it's gonna be violent and the Ennis name dropping and decent casting, its pretty much all been talk, and that's not a enough for me. She hasn't done anything a director to warrant blind approval from me. So, it's a waiting game for me.

She's done one thing as a director that's good: she casted Ray Stevenson. If you aren't convinced after the pics we've seen so far that he is going to be great, then I don't know what to tell you.

I do think, however, that the trailer will give everyone some insight as to how the movie is going to feel; good or bad. It's about time we have one.

The pictures did nothing for me, what can I say. And I mentioned the casting.

Hell, they could at least put something out like the teaser they did for last one.

The Punisher teaser

itll be a while for a trailer considering the flick aint out till december... im gonna guess Hulk2 in june at the earliest (not Iron Man, id be shocked if i saw a trailer w/IM)... and thats gonna be a teaser at best

How can you be convinced after a few pictures? That's like seeing pictures of Ghost Rider, seeing that he looked badass, and being convinced that the movie would be great...

December 5th? If it gets in theaters on the 5th it will be out on DVD before Christmas. Perfect gift for the Holidays.

the pics show us three things... ray stevenson is the punisher, lexi alexander got the look right, and therefore this looks to be the most faithful adaptation of the punisher yet. that's good enough to keep my glass half-full.

Well, I can argue that Jane looked just as much like the Punisher as Stevenson.* We all know how some people feel about that movie, the pictures looked good but were not indicative of how it would be. Unless by faithful you mean taking place in "New York."

I don't want it to seem that I'm tearing this movie down, before I've seen a single frame. I'm just not heaping blind praise on it.

*I know you're gonna say he looks like the MAX Punisher, no argument there. The '04 movie was based on Welcome Back, Frank which was drawn by Steve Dillion and Jane looked like the Dillion Punisher among a few other artist renditions.

glass is always half full in my book, sir

Haven't you seen Ray in other things? He's a more fitting actor for the Punisher than Nicolas Cage was for Johnny Blaze. It's non-comparable.

Exactly. I watched Rome and he's incredible in that, but most recently I watched Outpost. The movie itself wasn't great, but Ray was great in it.

So, couple that with the fact that he looks amazing as the character of The Punisher and I am convinced he's going to be great.

Yeah I think I saw him in a couple of low grade direct to Wal-mart horror movies... I'm trying to think of the name of one of those movies... well he was in them so I'm sure they were all box office blockbusters.:whatever:
