Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The RATINGS Thread - Part 1

Wow, I am fully convinced that the ratings system is complete crap now. The chat room I frequent during episodes that usually has 120 people had 200+ last night. It trended on twitter from every place known to man and nationally for like 10 hours. It was trending in my location and it never trends here, only thing that ever seems to trend where I am at is sports related and there was a lot of big things happening in the sports world yesterday evening so that is impressive in my area. I am officially calling BS on this whole rating thing.

That is waaaaay to low. 1.4? That makes no sense. The internet was screaming AoS last night.

Agents of Shield continues to get better. I hope it runs a few more seasons.

It can scream all it wants but if they aren't a Nielsen household it doesn't matter.

Adjusted up to 1.5 in finals

Numbers has always been consistent.....

The only way it will grow and trend up is if they have core Marvel Universe members
like Iron Man, Cap etc etc....
Or come up with a creative way of getting the rest of the populace attention

I suppose the Nielsen households are watching NCIS?

Seriously we need a more accurate way of measuring viewership

Indeed. It does seem kind of weird though that it would drop like that for the finale. It's *possible* that any preemption's that occurred due to coverage on the Amtrak crash (in areas that were affected by such preemption's) might have had *some* affect on the numbers? Just a thought. We'll see if it adjusts at all later today.

well that sucks
such a great finale, to a show that has improved so much
I don't understand how you get a .2 dip from the second to last episode to the finale

If I were the writers, I would plan for next season to be the final one. At this rate, the ratings are going to be really week by this time next year unless they find a miraculous way to bring in new viewers. 3 seasons and 65 episodes is a very respectable run.

Maybe some people who normally would have an hour of time to watch AoS live, didn't have two hours to watch the finale, and decided to DVR it instead? Just a guess.

I'm no expert in the workings of TV, but I've heard it said that if you can make it through three seasons, you're practically guaranteed a fourth season, because having a fourth season makes the series qualify for syndication, or some such.

why would you plan to end a show that continues to get renewed? that doesn't sound smart at all

That's true, but isn't the syndication number 65? I could be wrong but I thought that 65 episodes was the magic number which AoS would achieve by this time next year.

@ reddog271 Wouldn't you prefer the writers write the season with a definitive conclusion rather than it end on a cliffhanger that may never get resolved? Plan for the worst hope for the best. :)

65 is the magic syndication number for animated shows (some will even settle for 52).

Most live-action shows need at least 88 episodes (preferably 100), which is roughly 4-5 seasons, to be considered eligible for any significant syndication deals.

Unless the ratings plummet drastically and ABC/Disney start losing all their advertsing revenue, then this show is guaranteed a fourth season.

Most shows get syndicated once they hit 100 episodes. They can be syndicated at whatever number they want but the industry standard is 100.

The Walking Dead went into syndication with something like 51 episodes...but this show aint no Walking Dead.

NO.... it's a very good show with a very loyal following. If they are considering a spin off... they damn sure aren't thinking of ending it

Just going off of recent history being renewed for a third season is pretty much being renewed for a fourth season.

The industry standard has lowered in recent years to 88. That's why a full order Season 3 pretty much confirms Season 4.

Plus Agents of Shield is a property of Disney's cash cow MCU. They are going to want have AoS for the post-civil war fallout

To be fair, the movies haven't done the show any favors whatsoever.

The tried tie-ins, guest characters, special trailer previews and it barely affects the ratings at all. The show has lost the casual fans, as well as the curious ones, and I doubt it'll ever get them back.

While I enjoy the show, I honestly feel it's only still alive because it airs on ABC. Put this on another network with these numbers and it would be canned.
