I've been saying reboot it for years. The series has gotten pretty convoluted and expanded far beyond its original premise. I'd throw away all the continuity and go back to basics with a brand new story
Capcom wasn't remastering bc the games will tie into 7. It was easy money, plain and simple. They've been remastering and re-releasing games across the board as that's been their strategy this gen bc their AAA development hasn't been strongI just don't see the point in putting money, time and effort for the remaster of RE1 remake, RE0 and now making a remake of RE2 then start from scratch? They are also doing that new Resident Evil CGI movie.
and they could easily come up with a new story without throwing the past continuity.
At this point, a reboot wouldn't make sense. Like if they are gonna reboot, are they gonna rehash the story from the 90s videogames? There's already the Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles which covered the early chapters of the franchise, no need to retell that. Then we already got a remaster of a remaster of RE1. Then RE2's remaster is already in the works and if it becomes a success, I wouldn't be surprised if RE3 gets one too. While RE0 also recently got a remastered version. For the people who are new to the series, they could just pick up the remaster edition of the videogames that I just mentioned.
Story-wise and gameplay wise, they just need to go back to basics - survival horror, lots of puzzles to solve and keys to find and enough with these corporations/organizations that are only important in 1 videogame. Personally I would like them to drop the co-op feature and they need to introduce someone that can be as popular as Leon, Chris and Jill, that we would see that person in multiple chapters of the series. Also build a trilogy for a new Umbrella or something, not like one-offs like Tricell. Like seriously every time there's a new game, there's a new corporation taking advantage of these G-viruses and there's a new squad hunting these bio terrorists. It was much simplier before when it was only Umbrella with the Stars officers from Raccoon City taking them down. For RE7 to RE9, they need to center around a corporation as the new big bad and center around an organization or a squad that tracks down these bio terrorists and IMO, that could be more interesting to see how the story moves forward.... unlike in RE4/RE5/RE6 and the Revelations game, where main antagonist is dead by the end of the game and you have these people working for different organizations and agencies which is harder to track of.
I'd put money on a reboot. Say what you want but the vast majority panned 6. I myself don't mind it.. But I fully expect them to start back at one. They'll give us a brand new version of RE1.. The RE2 remake will pick up from that I'd bet.
Maybe not and I honestly don't care either way... But if I was a betting man I'd say Capcom won't care about continuing a story from a game that most people didn't like.. And instead will try to win back the original back bon fans of the series.

Yup, just go back to basics. I mean it's something fans have been asking for a long time.
I started one of the Revelation games. The one with Barry Burton's daughter and Claire. Did that game's main villain have ties to a new corporation?
RE6 is the second highest selling entry in the franchise. It was panned by a very vocal internet minority. There's no indication that the majority hated it. In fact, its sales tell a different story. The sales started slowly, but built with time to where it did, showing a case more for people liking what the game offered more than not..
It's the lowest rated RE title in the main line, it was much more than a vocal minority who panned that game. Anyone who had any sense, panned that game. It sold well for the same reasons Call of Duty sells so well, it was a mindless, simplistic action romp.

Resident Evil 7 is in development and will be announced at E3 in Los Angeles next month, according to Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based games industry consultancy Kantan Games.
Toto describes the game as a “clean slate,” returning to the series’ horror roots. The team developing it is reported to have hired Jordan Amaro, a designer who previously worked on Metal Gear Solid V and P.T.
Capcom announced yesterday that it is planning the launch of a major title by March 2017 that is expected to sell approximately four million units. Resident Evil 7 would certainly fit that bill. And let’s not forget that 2016 marks the series’ 20th anniversary.
Thanks, @SerkanToto (2).

I'm going to have to say that he is speaking for a fan like me; I'm not into the RE series for survival horror, I'm into the RE series for action horror. Some people complain about not being threatened by run of the mill zombies and of having too great of an arsenal; I'd be complaining about why there aren't more "shoot that meat T-Rex in the face" moments if they "took it back to basics."
I honestly don't care about the first two games that much; to me, the series took off after 4.
That's where the series died for me. RE1-3 are the best.. After that, it wasn't really RE. Sure RE4 is a good game.. But it's not a GOOD RE game. IMHO.
Resident Evil relied heavily on the atmosphere and tension of being alone in total uncertainty. That was for the old games, where the action was less focused on.
I would've hated having Rebecca following Chris around, or Barry accompanying Jill everywhere in that mansion.
Feeling isolated and alone in the mansion in 1, and the station in 2, would have obviously been ruined with a partner. The camera angles, the music, the tension of the unknown, all this and more, invoked feelings of dread in the player, because you had only your own bullets and bravery to push you forward.
Now, it's okay to move forward because your partner has your back, or will give you a hint or a quick bit of friendly chat/joke/quip to help ease your tension in the middle of all the horror :/
