Capcom has released the first in a series of developer interviews celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Resident Evil series.

The first Resident Evil launched 20 years ago today, on March 22, 1996.
The first video features producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi. The videos that follow will feature commentary from some of the other team members who have played a vital role in developing the Resident Evil brand into what it has become today.

Capcom says it will have anniversary celebrations for Resident Evil continuing “over the next year” and that “the team is already hard at work to deliver some amazing new surprises.”

Intro
I’m Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a producer at Capcom. I’ve been involved in the Resident Evil series since the first game 20 years ago.
Since becoming a producer I’ve worked on the GameCube Resident Evil remake, as well as Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 6.
For the movies I was involved from the second one, right up to the upcoming sixth installment, and I’m also a producer on the CG movies.
The Birth of Survival Horror
I had just joined Capcom when the original Resident Evil was in development, and I joined the team as a programmer. I worked alongside experienced staff on a team programming enemies. I was mostly doing small creatures: spiders, bees, crows and so on. The biggest thing I worked on was the human-fly hybrid, who appears in the research lab towards the end of the game. I did some other things too, but those were the most interesting.
At its largest the team was over 100 people. I joined the team about a year before the game came out, but some had been on the project from start to finish. Opinions often clashed as we were making something very unlike previous games, but even when at cross-purposes, the team worked hard and pulled together.
The Secret of Success
The first game had a really scary horror atmosphere, and I think the second one continued very much in the same vein.
The series has an entertainment side to it too, though. They’re like movies, so even if you’re not a big horror fan, there are other elements you can enjoy such as the story, and the various puzzles that appear in the game, and so on.
I think that variety allowed all kinds of people to enjoy the game over the past 20 years. I’m not very fond of horror myself. Besides, when you work on the game, you already know what’s going to happen. So I didn’t think it was that scary while working on it. But then we ran user tests and I saw people getting very shocked and scared. That really made me realise how scary it truly was. But at the time, I felt there was a big difference between how the creators saw the horror in the game and how players themselves experienced it.
New Consoles, New Challenges
With any game series you need new ideas as new consoles arrive. Resident Evil games have always had beautiful graphics. Working out how to make the games look great on new hardware was always a big challenge. The programmers and the artists had to work together to find a way to overcome that challenge. The first game in particular was very much a process of trial and error. Our methods improved as we grew accustomed to the hardware. But we tend to dream really big when we get a new console to work with.
We go in thinking anything is possible, but of course the reality is very different. Our job is then to work out what we can realistically achieve
All titles are hard work, but I find with Resident Evil, the graphics are especially challenging on every project.
The Essence of Resident Evil
There’s no secret manual at Capcom that tells you how to make a Resident Evil game. We’ve been making them for 20 years and passing knowledge down from project to project. Of course, horror is a very important part of it. But while we understand horror, that’s not all there is to it. Each title has its own additional aspects to it. So we have to respect the horror part while recognizing we need more
I have my own take on how to bring the entertainment part to the table. You could say titles I’ve produced have tended towards the entertainment side of the scale. I like to make games that even non-gamers can enjoy. I also want the movies to be enjoyable just as movies, even if you’ve never played a Resident Evil game. I’m always conscious of my goal of bringing Resident Evil to a wide audience
Resident Evil 4‘s Gameplay Revolution
The original Resident Evil was really an amazing game to work on. I feel privileged to be one of the hundred-odd people who can say that. As the series progressed we kept that spark going, and by the time of the fourth game, the series was very popular. But Resident Evil 4 was a completely different game. It brought accurate shooting gameplay to the Resident Evil universe and started a new style that would continue with 5 and 6
That was definitely a big change for Resident Evil. I mean, 4 didn’t even have zombies in it! It featured new enemies called Ganados, which paved the way for a new kind of experience.
A Message to Resident Evil Fans
Resident Evil came out on March 22nd, 1996. I never thought I’d still be working on the series 20 years later. We owe the global success of the series to you, our incredible fans. Each title in the series has its own tone, and while people may like one over another, the creative teams are just as passionate no matter which title. So if you’re a Resident Evil fan but there are titles in the series you’ve not played. I would love it if you’d take the time to check them out. Hopefully the 20th anniversary will give you a chance to think about the whole series. Thank you and I look forward to your continued support of Resident Evil!

I first played a Resident Evil game when Resident Evil 2 came out for the N64. I died multiple times at the very first part trying to figure out how to move. I was frustrated beyond words and cursed tank controls. Eventually I learned how to move Claire Redfeld and beat the game. I have been in love with the series ever since.

Eventually the PlayStation was purchased and I got to play Resident Evil Dual Shock version and Nemesis.

I remember when I saw photos of the amazing looking remake for the Game Cube in maybe Electronic Gaming Monthly. I was so excited it hurt, I couldn't stop looking at the screenshots, it looked too good to be true. And after playing remake it just about lived up to my expectations. I owned a Dreamcast as well and Code Veronica blew me away when I played it.

It's difficult to describe the effect that the Resident Evil series has had on me.

Happy 20th Anniversary Resident Evil.

My first memory I can still recall to this day:

It was raining outside and I was waiting for my mother to return with my friend who was coming over for dinner. They came in and I was presented with a Playstation magazine with a demo disc

To cut the story short - I popped it in, didn't know how the **** to move Leon from the wreckage with the tank controls (never played a game like it before) and ended up being consumed by flaming zombies...

Happy 20th anniversary Resi!

I actually played the very first game at a friend's house way back in the day. We were also having a hard time moving, but then I tried using the D-Pad and it worked like a charm. For whatever reason, he always refused to use the D-Pad, and he ended up always getting super pissed at the controls haha.

I wonder when they are gonna officially announce RE7?

I remember RE6 coming out of nowhere and like boom, trailer, screenshots, expected year of release.

And oh yeah can't wait RE2 remake, and I hope they are also considering remaking RE3, roaming around Raccoon City was just thrilling!

They revealed RE6 right before E3, but I believe partially they did this because there was a leak or something, so they went ahead and made the reveal official. So, I'm guessing E3 this year.

That would be great!

Aside from the HQ upgrades of the past games, I felt its been a long time since they released a new game. Umbrella Corps is like the Mercenary game so eh, I have zero interest for that. While Revelations 2 is still new, but I thought Revelations 1 was better and I felt like it quickly went off the radar once all episodes were released.

Crossing my fingers for Claire and Jill for RE7! I hope they will bring back someone familiar, & not another character like Sheva, Josh or Piers that will only appear in 1 game.

Resident Evil turns 20? I feel old.

I remember people talking about RE 1, I had a Sega Saturn, so I didn't get it initially. When it was ported to the Saturn a year later, I got it. At first I didn't know what was going on, how to use the controls or use the knife or shoot. Needless to say the very first zombie killed me. I got better and eventually finished the game.

Then Part 2 came out, but on the Playstation only, I remember them cancelling the Saturn port. And I still remember the day I played part 2 for the first time, was at a friend's house, and one of their friends brought over the game. I was immediately hooked! The intro, running down the streets of Racoon City, flaming zombies, the zombies in the bus, getting into the police station! Greatness. Next payday, I went out and got a Playstation and the game. That game was the game I finished the most times, and unlocked pretty much everything. Mowing down zombies with the gatling gun was the best. I also had it for the Dreamcast.

I can't wait for the remake.

I have decided. I hope that the RE 2 remake is in the Game Cube RE remake mode. Again they can use real time backgrounds but I want some fixed camera angle goodness.

The model has been to bring back a familiar character with a new one since 5, so I expect that with 7 as well. Unfortunately, I think relying on established characters has made them lazy in creating new characters and they're just not interesting. Moira was probably the most interesting new character since RE2, she actually had a fairly good flushed out personality and character arc with her father. Alex Wesker had a lot of potential, too, but they kind of wasted her.

I think Jill will probably be the main protag in RE7, if I were to guess. She's not been playable in a main RE title since RE3. Seems like she's due for that spot. Claire I somewhat doubt since she was just the main in Revelations 2.

Yeah, we are due for a post brainwash Jill and if she has retained any 'enhancements' or not. I'd like to see the t-virus plus whatever drug Wesker gave her that interacted with it get more in depth.

I'll be significantly more excited for 7 if Claire is a main character so I really hope for that.

If they're doing separate campaigns like in 6, then we could have Jill and Chris as one pair, like in RE1, and Leon and Claire as another, like in RE2.

If they're doing a solo adventure, I'd be cool with Jill, but I'd choose Claire over her in a heartbeat.

I watched Watchmojo's Resident Evil facts last night, and I kinda want Capcom to use Elza, the character from Resident EVil 1.5. I always wanted a blonde female protagonist (not counting Jill, since she was originally a brunette in her first game).

And if they are doing campaigns more than one, I think they should stick w/ two... and of course after you finish the game, there would probably be a bonus campaign just like Re4/Re5/Re6, so that's three over-all.

And please give Chris/Leon a rest, I love Leon... but give the spotlight to Jill, Claire or someone new that could potentially comeback for a 2nd/3rd game. All the big names of the game series have been introduced in the 90s and they haven't introduced since then someone that could rival the legacy of Chris, Leon, Jill, Claire, Wesker, Ada...

LOL...they should make a game starring the randoms we never saw again. Billy, Carlos, Sheva and Helena :jd:

With the level of success that RE has gained with co-op as its main feature, I would be highly surprised if they did a solo game again. I expect the same formula they've had since 5: returning character with a new character. It's been too successful to deviate from.

To be honest, I would be okay with that, though I know most wouldn't be. It's not even that I like those characters particularly, but I would like to see Capcom try and flesh out these characters that they keep creating so they can actually have a chance to become more established. Of course, I doubt Capcom will go that route, they'll play it safe and put the spotlight on one of the popular established characters first and foremost.

I want Carlos Oliviera and Steve Burnside back!

The rest I don't care.

And oh yeah Capcom needs to create new lead characters that the fans will look forward to in 1 to 3 games. And I don't want it to be a character related to an already established character (aka Moira Burton/Wesker's son). Plus if they are going back to basics, this would be a good start to do that.

No more characters coming back from the dead. Leave Steve Burnside dead and buried.

Yeah Steve is good and dead. Dude was annoying anyway. I'd be ok with Carlos coming back though.

I don't even think I remember Steve. I know you're talking about a character from Code Veronica, but I don't remember a thing about him.

I personally liked Steve, I just enjoyed playing him in Code Veronica for a small amount of time and I liked his storyline and he was also in Darkside Chronicles but yeah he's dead but they could easily come up a way to bring him back from the dead.

And Carlos, I also liked him a lot and I just enjoyed the part where I got to play him for the Hospital section for RE3 and I just liked his chemistry with Jill. Like if they were able to bring back Sherry from RE2 who was a kid back then, they should also bring back Carlos if they want to bring back another 1 and done character.

I'd be cool with Carlos coming back. I never liked the whiney Steve Burnside though. I was pretty okay with him dying.

Good times.

Didn't Billy become Nemesis?

I haven't played Zero, but I always assumed that's what happened to him.

Steve is also kind of too far into bio-mutation to be his old self again, or to revert to Sherry and Jake's appearance.

No, Billy didn't become Nemesis. He just walked away into the sunset basically.

You know what always annoyed me about Code Veronica? Chris's character model was odd. He looked kinda wimpy and he looked Asian for some reason and that's not what the character is. I just never liked that character model. I don't like Chris on roids either, I think REmake had the best character model.

And to be clear I'm not saying that Asian guys look wimpy I'm saying that he looks wimpy and Asian, two separate complaints because I'm not an idiotic racist.
