Capcom The Resident Evil Thread

Resident Evil 6 is absolute dog****. Why am I doing this to myself again?
I went into that game thinking "It can't be as bad as people say" and throughout a majority of at least the Leon campaign I was like "It's not THAT bad". Problem is it's really long and by the 2nd campaign you are already starting to feel over it. Then you have another 10 hours or so left. There are maybe a few moments or sections of that game that I enjoyed but so much tedious stuff, QTE events and other random nonsense. I also think the whole "you get to replay this section from an earlier campaign but now with a different PoV" isn't nearly as exciting as they thought it would be.

I replayed RE1R and did the Chris side this time (played Jill for my first) and it was pretty good. Not a whole lot of differences just some minor ones. Jill definitely felt easier with more bag slots and lockpicks. Gonna replay RE2R now but I realized upon hitting the menu that there is something called "Second Playthrough" (or something similar) and it seems to be different starting area, different route in the Police station and you encounter Mr X a lot earlier. I might just do the normal playthrough because I'm not sure I really want an alternate one. I heard there's a different endboss though so I feel conflicted.

It feels like the most expensive Telltale game ever made lol and at the same time incredibly half-assed. The gunplay feels incredibly janky like it wasn't even play tested. Its also piss easy regardless of the difficulty setting you select. I thought it sucked at release but its sooooooo much worse than than remembered. Even by seventh gen standards, its embarrassing. At this point, I'm continuing with it for the laughs.

RE1 remake adds completely new areas, a graphical and voice overhaul and a monster that's likely in the Requiem. There's substantial changes there. To me, the first remake was always the game Mikami envisioned in his head but didn't have the resources and hardware to pull off.

RE6 is fine with someone else. Not great, but fine. Otherwise not worth the effort.

It took PT and The Last of Us to show Capcom that RE can be scary and action.

I liked the beginning of Leon's campaign in RE6. Parts of Chris's campaign too as well Sherry's stealth section.

The section in which they used giant guns against gigantic enemies were the parts I didn't enjoy.

Leon's campaign is probably the best because it feels the most RE. There's definitely moments of that campaign like running through that campus area or going through the subway where you get glimpses of classic RE horror. I say glimpses because even though some moments are cool, gameplay wise you never feel scared and you're just running and shooting. The lack of puzzles also kinda suck.

When it comes to Sherry/Jake or the Chris campaign I feel like I enjoyed myself during the cutscenes more than the actual gameplay. The Chris one feels very Gears of War and if I wanted to play that I would play that. I forget the name of the big creature boss that is stalking Sherry/Jake (Ustanak or something?) and I actually think that boss has a cool design and there's maybe 1 interesting stealth section involving him but it just feels wasted in a game that's so boring. If the level design was more like classic RE and you had to solve some puzzles to get out of a place with him stalking you, that could be cool! Instead he just shows up here and there.

I know the Ada campaign gets a lot of love and it might be the 2nd best but for me it's too little too late. By that point you're 15 hours into a game you just want to end. I think also Ada's involvement in the plot is kinda stupid and the plot as a whole is just really silly. I feel like as Ada you get to replay a handful of earlier sections but from her PoV and it's not refreshing or fun anymore it just feels like "I'm doing this again?!".

I replayed RE2R and RE3R. These games got me into the franchise but I hadn't played either of them since they were 'new' and I've played all the other numbered games since (not the original PS1 games though), so figured it would be nice to revisit these ones.

RE2R still holds up really well. I go back and forth if this or RE4R is my favorite but I think for horror RE2R gets the nod. The RPD is just such a spooky building and once you unleash the Tyrant it gets scarier. I actually appreciated the sewers a bit more on this playthrough. The lab part is the weakest from a gameplay perspective but not bad. The end fight is a bit lame mostly because its a "stay alive" timer and weapons don't do much sadly. But overall fantastic game.

RE3R feels like wasted potential. I still like it but I'm aware of the OG fans saying it falls so short of the original, and I believe them. Nemesis is a cool iconic villain but he feels too scripted in my opinion and he goes through 3-4 shape shifts and by the end it just feels annoying. I get that he's the killing machine that won't stop, but it does get old by the end, and the game isn't even that long. Since I haven't played the OG game I'm curious, is there an ICONIC setting of this game? You know, a Spencer Mansion, an RPD station, or the village from 4. I feel like you don't spend enough time in a place for it to really get 'iconic'. I enjoy roaming the streets, I enjoy the hospital but these sections are so short that you don't get to truly fall in love with them. Jill is awesome though, as is Carlos.
